Consumption of Vitamin A Rich Foods and Their Primary Dietary Sources among Rural Preschoolers in the Gambella Region, Southwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Globally, the consumption of vitamin A-rich foods remains a significant public health challenge, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where access to these foods is limited. Preschool-aged children in rural areas are especially vulnerable to vitamin A deficiency due to poor dietary diversity and limited access to healthcare services. In Ethiopia, there is a scarcity of research on vitamin A intake among rural preschoolers, particularly in the Gambella Region. The objective of this study was to assess the consumption patterns and primary dietary sources of vitamin A-rich foods among

Pancytopenia in the Third Trimester of Pregnancy: A Case of Concurrent Folate and Zinc Deficiencies due to Unbalanced Dietary Habits.

A 25-year-old pregnant woman (gravida 2, para 1) presented with progressive anemia unresponsive to iron supplementation, ultimately developing pancytopenia at 37 weeks of gestation. Despite adequate caloric intake, her diet consisted primarily of ultra-processed and frozen foods. Laboratory findings showed hemoglobin of 5.5 g/dL, mean corpuscular volume of 102.9 fL, and elevated lactate dehydrogenase. Her serum folate, vitamin B12, and zinc levels were 1.3 ng/mL, 131 pg/mL, and 57 μg/dL, respectively. A healthy infant was delivered via cesarean section at 38 weeks, and the mother's pancytopeni

In-vitro experiments suggest Ixodes ricinus nymphs prefer blood with Borrelia infection and low glucocorticoid levels.

Ticks play a significant role in the transmission of various pathogens, impacting both human and animal health. Understanding the factors influencing tick feeding preferences is crucial for mitigating the risk of tick-borne diseases. This study investigates the blood preference of Ixodes ricinus nymphs, focusing on host species, stress hormone levels (glucocorticoids), and the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. bacteria. We conducted three series of in vitro experiments using a setup where individual blood drops (15 μl) were placed on filter paper over a 37 °C plate. Ticks were placed in th

Nutrition and Periodontitis: A Cross-Sectional Study from a Practice-Based Research Network.

BACKGROUND: Despite clinical interventional studies on the influence of diet on periodontal inflammatory parameters, there has been no practice-based cross-sectional study from a German population to date that has conducted both a comprehensive dental and periodontal examination and a thorough validated assessment of dietary behavior. Therefore, the aim of this pilot study was to evaluate, in a proof of concept, whether there is a correlation between the overall periodontal inflammatory surface area (PISA), periodontal clinical parameters (pocket probing depths (PPD), clinical attachment loss

Consumption frequency of ultra-processed foods and beverages among 6- to 36-month-olds in Kampala, Uganda.

The nutrition transition in sub-Saharan Africa has led to increased consumption of ultra-processed foods in infancy, especially sweet foods. This has heightened the risk for nutrition-related non-communicable diseases, including dental caries and overweight/obesity, and promotes poor food choices later in life. The present study used a cross-sectional design to investigate the consumption frequency of ultra-processed foods and beverages among urban 6- to 36-month-olds attending four selected health facilities in Kampala using a standardised questionnaire and 24-h diet recall record. The primar

Orexin neurons mediate temptation-resistant voluntary exercise.

Despite the well-known health benefits of physical activity, many people underexercise; what drives the prioritization of exercise over alternative options is unclear. We developed a task that enabled us to study how mice freely and rapidly alternate between wheel running and other voluntary activities, such as eating palatable food. When multiple alternatives were available, mice chose to spend a substantial amount of time wheel running without any extrinsic reward and maintained this behavior even when palatable food was added as an option. Causal manipulations and correlative analyses of ap

Towards Novel Nutritional Strategies in Gestational Diabetes: Eating Behaviour and Obesity in Women with Gestational Diabetes Compared with Non-Pregnant Adults.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes is associated with increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Effective nutritional strategies are needed to reduce BMI and improve long-term maternal cardiometabolic health, but the relative contribution of maternal eating behaviour, a potential barrier to dietary change, has not been explored. We compared eating behaviour in women with gestational diabetes with that of men and non-pregnant women with comparable risk factors, and tested associations between eating behaviour traits and BMI in women with gestational diabetes. We hypot
