Trypanosoma cruzi may be transmitted to a susceptible human through different routes: a superficial lesion in the skin, such as a scraping of the small wound produced by the hematophagous triatomid bug vector, which becomes infected with its contaminated feces; the placenta, from the infected mother to the product of conception; a transfusion from an infected donor, or even by ingestion of diverse foods infected or contaminated with the parasite. Whichever may be the transmission of the protozoon, it is advisable to have in mind that it is able to produce an asymptomatic or a symptomatic infec

BACKGROUND: Foodborne and waterborne diseases and outbreaks are a neglected public health issue worldwide. In developing countries, diarrheal disease caused by foodborne and waterborne infections is a major cause of ill health. There is a lack of information on foodborne pathogens, their transmission routes, outbreaks, and related mortalities, due to the absence of a robust disease surveillance system and adequately equipped laboratories. Although hygiene practices are much better in Western countries, the widespread use of preserved and raw food items is a cause of concern. Consequently, the

A PCR detection based on 16S-23S rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of Klebsiella pneumoniae was developed in the present study. Nineteen different ITS sequences were amplified from 6 strains of K. pneumoniae by universal primers. By sequencing and alignment of these sequences to the other homologous in GenBank, species-specific primers of K. pneumoniae, Pf/Pr1 and Pf/Pr2, were designed for amplification of the ITS sequence from the operon containing tDNA(Ala) and tDNA(Ile). Ten type strains and 21 isolates of K. pneumoniae were positive to the PCR detection, and all of the non-K. pneumoni

This study was designed to determine the serotypes, genotypes, and antibiotic resistance (AbR) patterns of 42 Salmonella isolates recovered from either fecal or litter samples of 12 commercial turkey farms across two seasons (summer and winter) and two ages (3 and 19 weeks). Isolates were serotyped on the basis of the Kauffmann-White scheme. Genotyping was done by restriction digestion of cDNA (XbaI) and subsequent pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The AbR was determined with Sensititre susceptibility plates. Serovar Kentucky was the most prevalent serotype (26%), followed by Senftenber

The water used to reduce the excess NaOH after the immersion of green olives in lye becomes a heavily polluted, alkaline wastewater (AW) once it has come into contact with the fruits. Its treatment with ozonated air for 72 h (TAW) destroyed all polyphenols in the solution. A comparison of the microbial, physicochemical, and organoleptic characteristics of olives processed in the traditional way (W) and those reusing AW or TAW was made. The reuse of TAW or diluted TAW (TAW + W) as fermentation brines led to a shorter lag phase, higher maximum specific growth of lactobacillus, and higher lactic

Pollution resulting from mining, industry, and agriculture has played an important role in shaping the evolution of diverse organisms. Heavy metal contamination is of particular concern due to the health effects for humans and cross-tolerance effects that may influence pesticide resistance. We used a replicated artificial selection approach to examine the response to copper selection in Drosophila melanogaster collected from a retired mine and active fruit orchard. We tracked shifts in resistance to the target trait, adult copper resistance, as well as off-target effects on cadmium and lead re

Real-time and accurate monitoring of heavy metal concentrations in rice is essential for ensuring food safety and supporting the safe utilization of contaminated agricultural land. Hyperspectral technology offers advantages such as rapid, nondestructive, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly monitoring. This study developed multiple models for estimating Pb content in rice leaves, compared their performance, and identified stable modeling pathways for continuous regional monitoring using hyperspectral remote sensing data. A meta-analysis was conducted to assess how different spectral pr

Microplastics, as emerging persistent environmental contaminants, can act as vectors for the absorption of other pollutants in ecosystems, such as pesticide residues. However, the combined toxicological effects of microplastics and pesticides on pollinators remain poorly understood. Here, we evaluated the toxicity of polystyrene microplastics (PS) and glyphosate (GLY), both individually and in combination, in honeybees (Apis mellifera). While no significant changes in body weight gain or food consumption were observed after 20 days of exposure, co-exposure to PS and GLY significantly increased

Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile), once considered a predominantly nosocomial pathogen, is increasingly implicated in community-acquired infections (CA-CDIs). This study investigates the prevalence, ribotypes, and antimicrobial susceptibility of C. difficile in Irish pork products and abattoirs, with a focus on the potential public health implications. A total of 180 retail pork products and 150 pig carcase swabs from three abattoirs were examined, alongside 30 environmental lairage samples. The C. difficile isolates were characterised through ribotyping and tested in terms of antimicrob

Streptococcus suis is a major pathogen in pigs, causing diseases like meningitis, septicemia, and pneumonia, and has become a serious zoonosis in humans, particularly in countries with intensive swine production. Human infections have risen significantly, especially in Thailand, where serotype 2 is most commonly associated with disease in both pigs and humans. Traditional methods of identifying S. suis and its serotypes, such as bacterial culture, biochemical testing, and agglutination tests, face challenges due to variability and limited antisera availability, leading to the need for alternat

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) outbreaks caused by Escherichia coli are typically foodborne, and linked to contaminated food or water sources. This article describes an outbreak associated with a public aquatic facility during a state-level championship in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, in July 2024. The outbreak was linked to a malfunctioning pool filtration system and inadequate maintenance, creating an unusual environmental source of E. coli transmission. Epidemiological investigations were conducted, along with environmental assessments and laboratory analyses of clinical (rectal swabs and stool cult

Effective disinfection methods are crucial in the cold chain transportation process of food due to the specificity of temperature and the diversity of contaminated flora. The objective of this study was to investigate the sanitizing effect of different disinfectants on various fungi at - 20 °C to achieve accurate disinfection of diverse bacterial populations. Peracetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and potassium bisulfate were selected as low-temperature disinfectants and were combined with antifreeze. The sanitizing effect of these cryogenic disinfectants on pathogens such as Bacillus subtilis bla

Bacillus cereus is a common foodborne pathogen that frequently contaminates rice products and produces cereulide toxins, presenting a significant risk to food safety and human health. In contrast, Bacillus subtilis is a promising source of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). In this research, a novel AMP named BCP4 (KGKTLLQ) was discovered through the fermentation of shrimp waste with B. subtilis, which speculated that BCP4 might be generated through enzymatic hydrolysis catalyzed by endogenous enzymes naturally present in shrimp waste. BCP4 demonstrated potent antibacterial activity against B. cer

Human exposure to Vibrio vulnificus, a gram-negative, halophilic environmental pathogen, is increasing. Despite this, the mechanisms of its pathogenicity and virulence remain largely unknown. Each year, hundreds of infections related to V. vulnificus occur, leading to hospitalization in 92% of cases and a mortality rate of 35%. The infection is severe, typically contracted through the consumption of contaminated food or exposure of an open wound to contaminated water. This can result in necrotizing fasciitis and the need for amputation of the infected tissue. Although several genes (rtxA1, vvp

Chloroethenes are widely used as solvent in the metal industry and the dry cleaning industry, but their spillage into soil and groundwater due to improper handling has negatively impacted human health. Bioremediation using microorganisms is one of the technologies to clean up soil and groundwater contaminated with chloroethenes. In this study, we examined the bioremediation of chloroethene-contaminated soil using wine pomace extract (WPE). WPE is a liquid containing seven major carboxylic acids and other substances extracted from grape pomace produced in winemaking. WPE clearly promoted the an

INTRODUCTION: Campylobacteriosis is the most common human foodborne bacterial infection worldwide and is caused by bacteria of the Camplylobacter genus. The main source of these bacteria is poultry, but other food-producing animals such as pigs are also responsible for human infections. An increasing number of strains with resistance to fluoroquinolones and other antimicrobials such as macrolides were recently noted. The aim of the study was to investigate Campylobacter contamination of porcine carcasses and determine the antimicrobial resistance of the obtained isolates.

Human excreta (HE) and food waste (FW) are the primary contaminants in rural regions. Prior to treating these contaminants, mastering their properties is required. In this study, the characteristics of the HE leaving the body and FW leaving the kitchen to the subsequent respective fermentation were studied. Moreover, two kinds of co-fermentation processes for HE and FW were also investigated on the basis of mastering the properties. The results showed that, for a healthy adult, fresh feces, urine, and FW produced were about 163 g/cap/d (57.3 gCOD/cap/d), 1.6 L/cap/d (6.7 gN/cap/d), and 250 g/c

Salmonella spp. contaminates egg and poultry meat leading to foodborne infections in humans. The emergence of antimicrobial-resistant strains has limited the use of antimicrobials. We aimed to determine the effects of the food supplement, fermented defatted 'alperujo' (FDA), a modified olive oil by-product, on Salmonella Typhimurium colonisation in broilers. One hundred and twenty 1-day-old broilers were divided into four experimental groups-two control groups and two treated groups, and challenged with S. Typhimurium at day 7 or 21. On days 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 of life, duodenum and cecu

Estuarine ecosystems of the Bay of Bengal, India, are considered as the most productive environment, which have been persistently threatened by substantial anthropogenic activity. This study aims to investigate the metal contamination in the sediment of two estuaries and possible biomagnifications in the indigenous edible oyster Saccostrea cucullata and related health hazards due to its consumption. The accumulative ecological risks indicated that the sediment is moderate to strongly contaminated with cadmium and lead. The sediment pollution index and pollution load index suggested that the se

Fishes are the first group of vertebrates that respond when the environment is contaminated with pollutants resulted from anthropogenic activities. The development of the toxicity tests is bringing new evidence about the toxicological effects of the pollutants upon the life forms. Behavioural abnormalities in the swimming performance and cognitive processes were well associated with the response of organisms to pollutants from environment. The aim of the paper was to study the behavioural changes of zebrafish (memory, swimming performances and aggression) and oxidative stress (superoxide dismu
