Cost-effectiveness and cost-utility of long-term management strategies for heartburn.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the expected costs and outcomes of seven alternative long-term primary care strategies for the management of patients with moderate-to-severe heartburn over a 1-year period. METHODS: A decision-analytic model was developed to estimate costs and effects (weeks with heartburn symptoms and quality adjusted life years [QALYs]) for each strategy. Meta-analyses were used to synthesize acute treatment and maintenance studies and physician surveys to collect information on patient management. The impact of uncertainty on the base case results was assessed using probabilistic se

Study of Multi-Objective Tracking Method to Extract Multi-Vehicle Motion Tracking State in Dynamic Weighing Region.

Dynamic weighing systems, an advanced technology for traffic management, are designed to measure the weight of moving vehicles without obstructing traffic flow. These systems play a critical role in monitoring freight vehicle overloading, collecting weight-based tolls, and assessing the structural health of roads and bridges. However, due to the complex road traffic environment in real-world applications of dynamic weighing systems, some vehicles cannot be accurately weighed, even though precise parameter calibration was conducted prior to the system's official use. The variation in driving be

Retrospective analysis of post-mortem findings in domestic ducks and geese from non-commercial flocks in Sweden, 2011-2020.

BACKGROUND: Small poultry flock ownership has become a popular hobby in Europe and North America in recent years but there is a general lack of information regarding bird health and welfare. This retrospective analysis of routine post-mortem cases of non-commercial anseriform poultry aimed at providing information on causes of mortality mostly in relation to mortality events. For this purpose, birds that were submitted for routine post-mortem diagnostics to the National Veterinary Institute (SVA) in Sweden in 2011-2020 were retrospectively reviewed to determine main causes of mortality. RESUL

Avoiding bites and scratches? Understanding the public health implication of human-bat interactions in Ghana.

Zoonotic pathogens cause an estimated 70% of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in humans, affecting various aspects of human development on a global scale. The significance of bats as a source of emerging infectious diseases is being progressively appreciated. This study was undertaken post-Ebola virus disease in West Africa and assessed the public health implications of human-bat interactions by exploring the reasons for contact between humans and bats, as well as reported actions taken upon experiencing bat bites or scratches. The paper highlights the nuances of human-bat interact

The CRIOAc healthcare network in France: A nationwide Health Ministry program to improve the management of bone and joint infection.

BACKGROUND: Bone and joint infections (BJIs) have a major clinical and economic impact in industrialized countries. Its management requires a multidisciplinary approach, and a great experience for the most complicated cases to limit treatment failure, motor disability and amputation risk. To our best knowledge there is not currently national specific organization dedicated to manage BJI. Is it possible to build at a national level, a network involving orthopaedic surgeons, infectiologists and microbiologists performing locally multidisciplinary meetings to facilitate the recruitment and the ma

Prevention and management of postpartum hemorrhage and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: results from a 31-country rapid assessment.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy (HDP) remain leading causes of maternal death. This multi-country survey asked key informants to assess uptake of evidence-based practices; determine their country's implementation of updated WHO global guidelines; and describe the private sector's role in PPH and HDP management. To our knowledge, this is among the few multi-country assessments to examine national implementation of updated WHO recommendations for PPH and HDP alongside private-sector engagement across three major regions-sub-Saharan Africa, South an

Sri Lanka: report on its children's environmental health.

Sri Lanka is an island country located in the Indian Ocean, characterized by tropical weather, with an estimated population of 21.4 million in 2017, one third of them being children. Advancing and rapidly changing technology, novel industries, consumer goods and equipment have introduced new health hazards of a chemical, biological and physical nature to future generations. The infant mortality rate has declined to around 8-9 per 100,000 since 2015. Congenital malformations were the most significant cause of neonatal death. Thus, there might be unproven environmental factors which affect infan

Telemedicine as a "digital umbilical" for maternal and reproductive healthcare: a qualitative study from health and wellness centers in rural West Bengal, India.

BACKGROUND: Rural women in India continue to face major geographical, financial, and sociocultural barriers to get timely maternal and reproductive healthcare, despite recent investments in primary care infrastructure and digital health initiatives. The West Bengal state telemedicine program, where patients are delivered healthcare through Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs), offers a hybrid model that combines on-site Community Health Officers (CHOs) with remote physicians, but its functionality for reproductive health remains underexplored. METHODS: This descriptive qualitative study explore

Navigating self-injury in a digital world: adolescents' perspectives on coping, help-seeking, and technology.

BACKGROUND: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), hereafter referred to as self-injury, is common among adolescents and is associated with elevated risk for suicide attempts and other adverse mental health outcomes. Because most adolescents who self-injure do not receive formal treatment, accessible alternatives are needed. Digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) may offer an accessible and scalable means of support. While previous research has examined DMHIs for youth, less is known about how adolescents who engage in self-injury understand their experiences and use digital technologies, includ

Stress Reduction in Perioperative Care: Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing surgery often experience stress and anxiety, which can increase complications and hinder recovery. Effective management of these psychological factors is key to improving outcomes. Preoperative anxiety is inversely correlated with the amount of information patients receive, but accessible, personalized support remains limited, especially in preoperative settings. Face-to-face education is often impractical due to resource constraints. Digital health (DH) interventions offer a promising alternative, enhancing patient engagement and empowerment. However, most curr

The Role of Information Management-Based Blood Glucose Management Pathways in Improving the Diagnostic Rate of Newly Diagnosed Diabetes Patients.

The global prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) continues to rise, with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) being the most common subtypes. T1DM is characterised by the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic β-cells leading to absolute insulin deficiency, whereas T2DM is associated with insulin resistance and relative insulin insufficiency, often linked to lifestyle factors. Both subtypes are frequently misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed due to insufficient screening awareness, outdated diagnostic processes, and poor patient compliance, leading to delayed intervention

Drug-related problems and their determinants among stroke patients in suburban China: a PCNE-based analysis with targeted initiatives.

BACKGROUND: Stroke remains a major public health burden in China, and the complexity of long-term pharmacotherapy often places stroke survivors at high risk for drug-related problems (DRPs). This study aimed to identify determinants of DRPs among community-dwelling stroke patients in suburban Beijing and to propose targeted initiatives for improving rational drug use. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from August 2022 to December 2024 among 481 stroke patients. Pharmacists performed face-to-face interviews to collect demographic, clinical, and drug-related information. DRPs were

AI-optimized pulsed electric field for low-carbon urban water disinfection.

Urban water systems are critical hubs for the flow of carbon and materials in urban metabolism. Traditional disinfection methods, such as chlorination, face a dual challenge. On one hand, they rely on energy-intensive chemical production and transportation, resulting in significant indirect carbon emissions. On the other hand, they release disinfection by products that harm ecosystems and public health, which directly contradicts the "One Health" framework. To address these issues, we have developed a new disinfection platform centered around an AI-optimized pulsed electric field system. Using
