Effects of high-dose alacepril on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and autonomic nervous system function in healthy dogs.

This study investigated the effects of low-dose and high-dose alacepril on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) and autonomic nervous system in healthy dogs. Six Beagle dogs received low-dose (2.0 mg/kg/day) or high-dose (6.0 mg/kg/day) alacepril for 4 weeks. Blood pressure, the urinary aldosterone-to-creatinine ratio (UAld: Cre), echocardiographic variables, and heart rate variability were assessed pre- and post-treatment. High-dose alacepril reduced blood pressure and left ventricular dimensions, indicating a reduced preload and afterload. Heart rate variability analysis showed an

The correlation between the cardiovascular instability and the size of the developed ischaemic lesions in patients who underwent carotid stenting.

AIMS: In this study we investigated the relationship between cardiovascular instability and the size of the developed ischaemic lesions during carotid stent implantation by diffusion-weighted (DWI) magnetic resonance (MR) examination. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed anaesthesia reports and follow-up MR examinations after stent implantation of 192 patients in a 3-year period. Nineteen aspects of cardiovascular status were analyzed. We registered the duration of the intervention, low and high blood pressure (BP) values during anaesthesia and heart rates. The fluctuations of BP

Investigation of bacterial translocation in chronic ischemic heart failure in the rat.

BACKGROUND: Increased markers of systemic inflammation had been found in patients with acute heart failure. These and other findings led to the hypothesis of an increased rate of bacterial translocation in severe or acute heart failure, leading to systemic inflammation. The present study examined if bacterial translocation occurs under physiological conditions in rats and if its rate and spectrum changes in chronic compensated ischemic heart failure. METHODS: Myocardial infarction (MI) was induced by proximal ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery or a sham operation was per

Lack of global vagal propensity in patients with oculocardiac reflex.

BACKGROUND: Profound bradycardia during ophthalmic surgery is a rare but potentially serious event. Little is known about the predictability of the oculocardiac reflex. METHODS: Four vagotonic maneuvers were performed on six patients who had profound oculocardiac reflex (3- to 10-second asystole) during eye surgery, the results of which were compared with 30 previously studied control subjects. Electrocardiographs were monitored during the following vagotonic maneuvers: diving response (apneic facial immersion), Valsalva maneuver, ocular compression, and carotid sinus massage. RESULTS: The d

[Effects of atrial fibrillation on the increase of atrial natriuretic peptide in congestive heart failure].

Aim of the study was to assess possible differences in ANP levels between patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) with and without chronic atrial fibrillation (AF). We studied 12 patients with chronic AF and 17 patients with sinus rhythm (SR), (m 16, f 13, years 67.7 +/- 8.6), with CHF, not hypertensive, without valvular or congenital heart disease, NYHA class II-III, by ANP RIA and echocardiography. Left atrial (LA/m2) dimensions were significantly higher in patients with AF, and ANP was also more increased in AF. Significant linear correlations between heart rate and ANP, ANP and LV sho

Acute haemodynamic effects of nifedipine in patients with ventricular septal defect.

The haemodynamic effects of nifedipine were studied in 14 patients (aged 8-14 years, seven male and seven female) with ventricular septal defect with and without pulmonary hypertension. All underwent left and right heart catheterisation. In each patient the pressures and heart rate were measured and blood samples were taken for oximetry before and after sublingual administration of 10 mg nifedipine. In eight patients with ventricular septal defect without pulmonary hypertension (mean pulmonary artery pressure less than 20 mm Hg) nifedipine significantly reduced the mean aortic pressure and sys

Myocardial function and metabolism in the conscious dog and during halothane anesthesia.

Chronically catheterized dogs were studied awake and during anesthesia with high and low concentrations of halothane to assess the relationship between cardiac function and metabolism. Low concentrations of halothane (0.79 per cent endtidal) increased heart rate and decreased left ventricular stroke volume, stroke work, and dP/dt without producing other hemodynamic changes. However, similar heart rate increases produced by atrial pacing in awake animals increased aortic pressure and cardiac output and decreased left atrial pressure. Consequently, the halothane-induced tachycardia partially com

Dual-organ transplantation in older recipients: outcomes after heart-kidney transplant versus isolated heart transplant in patients aged ≥65 years.

OBJECTIVES: Combined heart-kidney transplantation has successful outcomes. With an increasing number of patients with end-stage heart disease, there is a high incidence of significant renal insufficiency that may necessitate combined heart-kidney transplant. Outcomes for heart-kidney transplant recipients aged ≥65 years are not well described. METHODS: Between 2010 and 2015, 163 recipients ≥65 years of age were transplanted in a single centre: 12 heart-kidney and 151 isolated heart transplants. Outcomes assessed were estimated glomerular filtration rate at 1, 6 and 12 months after transplant,

1:1 atrioventricular conduction in congenital complete heart block.

A female neonate with congenital complete heart block developed atrioventricular conduction through an accessory pathway. Despite sinus rhythm and an adequate heart rate she developed severe dilated cardiomyopathy and died at age 14 months. This case illustrates that underlying heart block can be present in individuals with asymptomatic Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and that the dilated cardiomyopathy that occasionally accompanies autoimmune congenital heart block is not primarily caused by bradycardia.

Cardiac dynamics during social evaluative feedback: Evidence from intersubject representational similarity analysis.

In everyday interactions, social evaluative feedback can elicit defensive responses that vary across individuals, underscoring the need to clarify the psychophysiological mechanisms underlying this variability. This study examined the cardiac correlates of defensive responses to social feedback, focusing on how cardiac activity reflects individual differences in self-protective behavior. Participants completed a mobile-based reciprocal artwork evaluation task while cardiac activity was continuously monitored via photoplethysmography using a wearable smartwatch. During the task, participants re

Case Report: Micronized purified flavonoid fraction [Daflon]-induced bradycardia.

INTRODUCTION: Flavonoids are oral venoactive drugs frequently prescribed to relieve the symptoms of chronic venous disorders. Micronized purified flavonoid fraction (MPFF, commercial Daflon 1000 mg) is a preparation that contains mainly diosmin and a small fraction of hesperidin. Both active ingredients are flavonoids, known for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. OBJECTIVE: Whether the MPFF can alter hemodynamic behavior was examined. METHODS: Daflon 1,000 mg was administered for 60 days, and the hemodynamic parameters were measured during the circadian cycle. RESULTS: Ther

Prevalence and characteristics of shunt malfunction without ventricular size change at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh.

PURPOSE: To assess the safety of mobilizing patients receiving low-dose norepinephrine (0.05 μg/kg per min) by examining mean arterial pressure and heart rate before and after activity with parameters set by the physician. BACKGROUND: Norepinephrine is a peripheral vasoconstrictor administered for acute hypotension. During activity, blood flows to the periphery to supply muscles with oxygen, which may oppose the norepinephrine vasoconstriction. The safety of mobilizing patients receiving norepinephrine is unclear. METHODS: Heart rate, mean arterial pressure, norepinephrine dose, and activity

Supervised exercise improves autonomic modulation in participants in cardiac rehabilitation programs.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: An attenuated heart rate recovery (HRR) response after exercise testing is a robust predictor of mortality. Regular exercise can enhance various physiological parameters. Studies indicate that participation in a cardiac rehabilitation program can improve heart rate recovery. The aim of this study was to analyze changes in functional capacity and autonomic modulation in patients following a cardiac rehabilitation program. METHODS: Between 2009 and 2014, 248 individuals were assessed through exercise testing, at baseline and after six months of participation in a card

High psychosis liability is associated with altered autonomic balance during exposure to Virtual Reality social stressors.

BACKGROUND: Social stressors are associated with an increased risk of psychosis. Stress sensitisation is thought to be an underlying mechanism and may be reflected in an altered autonomic stress response. Using an experimental Virtual Reality design, the autonomic stress response to social stressors was examined in participants with different liability to psychosis. METHOD: Fifty-five patients with recent onset psychotic disorder, 20 patients at ultra-high risk for psychosis, 42 siblings of patients with psychosis and 53 controls were exposed to social stressors (crowdedness, ethnic minority
