[Current problems of echinococcosis (Echinococcus multilocularis)].

Alveolar echinococcosis is by far the most dangerous human parasitosis in Central Europe. For the one part this is due to the fact that the parasite is localised in the liver, and for the second part it is due to the infiltrative growth of the larval cestode tissue. The life cycle of echinococcus multilocularis takes place primarily between the fox as final host and mice as intermediate hosts. In this cycle, man is an accidental host and is infected orally via the intake of cestode eggs. The individual channels of infection and their frequency have so far only been subject to speculation. Attachment of mycoplasmas to host cell membranes.

Pathogenic mycoplasmas rarely invade the tissues or bloodstream. Their adherence to epithelial cell surface, the first stage in disease, involves protein binding sites on the mycoplasmal cell membrane and receptors on the host cell membrane. Strong evidence indicates that Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Mycoplasma pneumoniae adhere with the aid of sialic acid residues on host cells, but the data do not preclude participation by other host-cell membrane components. Several studies indicate that these mycoplasmas adhere by blebs or terminal structures; others suggest that binding occurs via other c

Mechanisms of acquired resistance to Pasteurella multocida infection: a review.

Pasteurella multocida is an animal parasite of considerable economic and veterinary importance. The organism produces both capsular polysaccharide and somatic (lipopolysaccharide) antigens used to serotype the organisms. Correlations exist between antigenic structure, host susceptibility and strain virulence. The host response seems to be predominantly polymorphonuclear in nature, with little evidence of a mononuclear component in the host response to infection. In the absence of specific opsonins, phagocytosis rates are very slow, the organisms multiplying freely in an essentially extracellul

Specific unresponsiveness to skin allografts in mice. IV. Immunological reactivity of mice treated with liver extracts, Bordetella pertussis, and antilymphocyte serum.

The strain-specific unresponsiveness to H-2 incompatible skin allografts induced by treatment of adult mice with single inoculations of donor strain liver extract and Bordetella pertussis vaccine, as well as three doses of antilymphocyte serum, has been investigated by several in vivo and in vitro methods, with a view to elucidating it mechanism. Lymphoid cells from mice with long surviving skin grafts were found to be reactive in graft-versus-host assays (as measured by splenomegaly or popliteal lymph node enlargement), and mixed lymphocyte culture tests gave positive results. Attempts to cau

Interferon, antibody, and other host factors in herpes zoster.

The influence of several factors on the course of herpes zoster was studied in 151 patients. Dissemination of zoster was associated with the presence of a concurrent disease, especially Hodgkin's disease, and/or the use of immunosuppressive therapy. Several host-immune parameters, including quantitative immunoglobulins, circulating lymphocyte counts, delayed hypersensitivity to multiple skin test antigens, and lymphocyte transformation to phytohemagglutinin did not correlate with dissemination of disease. Development of virus-specific complement-fixing antibody (CFA) was delayed in some patien

Ecological considerations in scrub typhus. 2. Vector species.

Certain features, characteristic of outbreaks of scrub typhus, can be explained by the behaviour of the chigger vectors which are remarkably hardy and can survive weeks of freezing or immersion in water. The established vectors are all species of the genus Leptotrombidium (Leptotrombidium), i.e., L. (L.) akamushi (Brumpt, 1910), L. (L.) deliense (Walch, 1922), L. (L.) pallidum (Nagayo et al., 1919), and L. (L.) scutellare (Nagayo et al., 1921). These chiggers (i.e. larval mites) infest a broad variety of birds and mammals, and tend to be found in clusters on certain specific sites on the host.

N-heterocyclic carbene-main-group chemistry: a rapidly evolving field.

This Award Article targets the evolving, yet surprisingly fruitful, chemistry of N-heterocyclic carbenes with low-oxidation-state main-group elements. Specifically, the chemistry of carbene-stabilized diatomic allotropes, diborenes, gallium octahedra, beryllium borohydride, and a host of related compounds will be presented. Providing a valuable historical perspective, the foundational work concerning the organometallic chemistry of gallium with sterically demanding m-terphenyl ligands from this laboratory will also be discussed.

Epstein-Barr virus infectious mononucleosis.

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is the aetiological agent of classical infectious mononucleosis. This review article describes the antigenicity of the virus, the specific antibody response and the stimulated polyclonal heterophile antibody production in the host. The diagnostic tests for EBV infection are discussed, with particular attention drawn to the pitfalls of the Monospot test. Complications are listed and management strategies are outlined. The uses and complications of steroids are discussed. The importance of avoidance of contact sport and the association with splenic rupture is describ

Anti-schistosome antibody responses in children coinfected with malaria.

People residing in schistosome endemic areas are often infected with other parasites. The interaction of the parasites in the host has important implications in the development of acquired immunity to schistosomiasis, and schistosome immuno-epidemiology. An analysis of specific anti-schistosome egg responses in children coinfected with schistosomiasis and malaria shows that malaria positive children produce significantly more anti-schistosome IgE and IgG3 than schistosome infected children who are negative for malaria.

Anesthesia for Resection and Reconstruction of the Trachea and Carina.

Airway surgery poses a host of unique challenges to both the surgical and anesthesiology teams. Accordingly, there are a variety of surgical, anesthetic, and airway management options to be strategically considered. Management can be challenging during multidisciplinary preoperative planning, during the surgical procedure itself, and during recovery. In this review, emphasis is placed on anesthesia challenges for patients undergoing major tracheal or carinal surgery with specific considerations related to perioperative management.

Reverse line blot hybridization with species-specific oligonucleotide probes: application to piroplasm detection.

Reverse line blot (RLB) hybridization has become a well-established and widely used method for the multiplex identification of several Babesia and Theileria species in hosts and tick vectors. The procedure is based on the simultaneous PCR amplification of a polymorphic region of the 18S rRNA gene from different piroplasms followed by identification of the individual species by hybridization to species-specific oligonucleotide probes covalently linked to a nylon membrane in a macroarray format.

Role of cytokines in pulmonary antimicrobial host defense.

Host defense of the lung is characterized by a fine balance between the generation of a vigorous inflammatory response to clear pathogens and maintenance of the integrity of the alveolar gas-exchange surface. The magnitude of the inflammatory response is therefore tightly regulated by pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokine mediators. This article summarizes current information on the roles of specific cytokines in pneumonia, with particular emphasis on ongoing investigations into the role of innate immunity in bacterial and fungal pneumonia.

Hand infections in the trauma patient.

Infections are a frequent, unfortunate complication seen in orthopedic trauma patients. The specific anatomy of the upper extremity makes it an easy target for opportunistic organisms, especially after an acute traumatic event. In addition, pathogenic factors and host factors can contribute to the severity of the infection. Meticulous wound management, identification of the offending organism(s), and tailoring of care to the special needs of the very sick trauma patient limit complications.

Identification of a conjugative plasmid carrying antibiotic resistance and salmonella plasmid virulence (spv) genes in epidemic strains of Salmonella typhimurium phage type 193.

A plasmid pDEP34 that codes for resistance to ampicillin, streptomycin, sulphonamides and tetracyclines has been identified in strains of Salmonella typhimurium phage type 193 which have become increasingly common in England and Wales since 1988. pDEP34 is also self-conjugative, carries the genes responsible for the virulence of host strains for BALB/c mice (spv genes) and is closely related to the Salm. typhimurium'serotype-specific' plasmid pSLT.

Hydrogel-Based BMP-2 Delivery for Bone Regeneration: From Material Control to Biological and Translational Evaluation.

Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) is a potent osteoinductive factor, but rapid loss of bioactivity, short local retention, burst release, and diffusion into surrounding tissues reduce dose efficiency and may necessitate supraphysiological doses associated with local adverse effects. Hydrogels offer tunable platforms for controlling BMP-2 localization, exposure, and presentation. This review classifies BMP-2-delivering hydrogels by their dominant delivery logic into passive spatial confinement, reservoir-unit-integrated delivery, stimuli-responsive delivery, and programmable biointeractive s

Phage Display in Veterinary Infectious Diseases: From Molecular Recognition to Diagnostic Validation and Protective Efficacy.

Phage display generates defined binding reagents; however, successful selection does not establish diagnostic usefulness or protection in animals. This critical narrative review examines the veterinary applications that have progressed beyond binding assays and the biological and validation barriers that explain their limitations. The studies were compared based on the contribution of phage display, experimental setting, comparator, and endpoint, distinguishing antigen discovery, diagnostic evaluation, functional activity, and efficacy in the target host. Recombinant reagents for infectious bu

Landscape of circular RNAs in acute myeloid leukemia and their clinical significance.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have emerged as important regulators in cancer biology, but their roles in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) remain poorly characterized due to limited sample sizes and technical challenges in RNA sequencing. Here, we analyze RNA-sequencing data from 315 Swedish AML patients to create the most comprehensive circRNA profile in AML to date. We identify 5,711 high-confidence circRNAs across 315 AML samples, including 402 differentially expressed between AML and healthy controls, with host genes enriched in hematopoietic pathways. We further discover two circRNAs including hsa_

Dual functional plant gene inhibits viral infection and development of systemic necrosis symptoms by distinct mechanisms in Arabidopsis.

Specific targeting of host genes by plant viruses leads to the induction of distinct disease symptoms with devastating consequences for agriculture. However, it is unknown whether plants have evolved genes to specifically inhibit the development of viral disease symptoms. Here we identified the causal gene in 2 Arabidopsis thaliana mutants that develop prominent systemic necrosis after infection with both wild-type cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and its mutant (CMV-Δ2b), which is defective in the suppression of antiviral RNA interference. We found that antiviral RNAi 5 (AVI5) is located in a larg

Current understanding and advances regarding the adipose-immune-metabolic axis in disease tolerance during sepsis.

Sepsis remains a critical global health challenge characterized by high mortality and morbidity, primarily due to the limitations of current pathogen-centric therapies and a poor understanding of host-defense mechanisms. This review synthesizes the pivotal role of the adipose-immune-metabolic axis as a central regulator of disease tolerance-a host defense strategy that limits tissue damage without directly reducing pathogen load. We delineate how adipose tissue is reprogrammed from a passive energy reservoir into an active immunometabolic hub during sepsis. This functional shift is governed by

Engineered Probiotics Protect against Pseudomonas aeruginosa Post Antibiotic Exposure.

Broad-spectrum antibiotics profoundly disrupt the commensal microbiota and compromise mucosal immunity, creating a vulnerable postantibiotic window that predisposes hosts to opportunistic infections such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Strategies for restoring host homeostasis and stimulating mucosal immunity during this period remain limited. Here, we developed a modular and programmable probiotic strategy based on engineered Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) that integrates metabolite replenishment with antigen-specific mucosal immunization. The butyrate-overproducing strain restored immune home
