Subacute thyroiditis is a benign, self-limited disorder characterized by hyperthyroidism that resolves spontaneously. Although cortisol metabolism is accelerated in hyperthyroidism, cortisol levels are usually normal. We describe a child with subacute thyroiditis whose presenting complaints and preliminary evaluation suggested a diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome. There was spontaneous improvement in the signs and symptoms with concomitant normalization of laboratory values. To assess the effect of obstructive sleep apnea treatment on plasma renin activity (PRA) and plasma aldosterone seven male patients were studied under two conditions: untreated and treated with nasal continuous positive airways pressure (CPAP). Tixocortol pivalate is a steroid reportedly without significant adrenal-pituitary axis suppression when administered via the gastrointestinal tract. To determine whether this steroid would suppress the gastrointestinal manifestations of systemic mastocytosis, we performed an open clinical trial for safety and efficacy with tixocortal pivalate in four patients for periods of 8-15 weeks. The effects of ketoconazole, a synthetic imidazole derivate, were evaluated in 42 women affected by acne (17 cases) and/or hirsutism (36 cases) treated with 400 mg/day for 3-6 months. Since his childhood a now 31-year-old male showed typical symptoms of parathyroid hormone deficiency with hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia. We found a target organ resistance to parathyroid hormone and diagnosed pseudohypoparathyroidism. In addition adrenal insufficiency with hypocortisolism was seen. Both hormone systems act by stimulating adenylate cyclase. A defective receptor-adenylate cyclase complex may cause this--for the first time described--combination of endocrine insufficiency.

A rare case is presented of a woman with spontaneous recovery from hypopituitarism following postpartum hemorrhage. One month after delivery, serum thyroid hormone, TSH, LH and FSH levels were low, and their secretion from the pituitary gland responded poorly to the TRH and LH-RH tests. Pituitary TSH response was normal 3 months after delivery. In the LH-RH test, pituitary LH and FSH response returned to normal at 2 months. A session of low-frequency electroacupuncture (EAP) of the nerve points of the cervicobrachial or lumbosacral regions was performed in 61 patients with vertebral osteochondrosis. An EAP therapeutic effect, analgetic one in particular, was found to depend on cortisol and aldosterone blood levels: reduced levels of the hormones related to EAP procedure appeared associated with a positive therapeutic response.

Human corticotropin-releasing hormone (hCRH) test was performed in 57 normal volunteers and 102 patients with hypothalamic, pituitary and adrenocortical diseases.
