T-Flux implant versus Healon GV in deep sclerectomy.

PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy and safety of T-Flux implant versus Healon GV in deep sclerectomy. METHODS: Randomized prospective trial o … ed complications included positive Seidel (13.6%), hyphaema (22.7%), choroidal detachment, and iris incarceration (4.5% each). At 2 years, ultrasound biomicroscopy showed mainly low reflective (40.1%) and flattened (36.4%) blebs. Principally latter ones were associated with the need for adjunctive treatment. A hypoechoic area in the suprachoroidal space was see …

A survey of bloodborne viruses and associated risk behaviours in Greek prisons.

AIMS: To determine HIV and hepatitis infection prevalence and correlates with risk behaviour. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study: voluntary, ano … of IDUs injecting in prison shared needles, indicating that IDUs inject less but share more during incarceration. Multiple logistic regression revealed needle-sharing as the most important risk factor for HCV infection in IDUs. Prior knowledge of a positive hepatitis result did not appear to inhibit IDUs from practising risky behaviours in prison. CONCLUSIONS …

Femoral hernia: the dire consequences of a missed diagnosis.

Femoral hernia has always presented more difficulty in diagnosis than other external abdominal hernias. The incidence of incarceration and strangulation is higher in our series than the published literature would suggest. A retrospective study was performed at our institution from February 1990 to June 1995. In that period, 22 patients were operated on for femoral hernia. There were 16 women and 6 men, average ages 51 and 48 years, respectively. The men weighed on average 209 lb, and the women, 154 lb. Three of our patients had elective repair of their hernias (16%); 19 were performed urgently…

The Relationship Between Psychopathy and Violence: A Comparison Across Birth Cohorts.

The current study responds to calls to consider whether individual characteristics (e.g., psychopathy) interact with broader structural conditions (e.g., economic, social, and legal contexts) in ways that influence offending. We examined whether the psychopathy-violence relationship varies across birth cohorts. Data came from 535 male and female participants from the Incarcerated Serious and Violent Young Offender Study who were interviewed in adolescence and received a rating on the Psychopathy Checklist: Youth Version (PCL:YV). Participants were born between 1979 and 1997 and were followed i

COVID-19 infection and risk of incident hypertension: a case-control time-to-event study.

Most previous studies of increased hypertension (HTN) incidence following COVID-19 infection lack longitudinal testing and diagnostic information and under-represent minorities. We examined this relationship using a case-control time-to-event-study of 39 746 individuals continuously incarcerated from January 1, 2019, to March 1, 2020 (pandemic start), followed until March 1, 2023 in 31 California state prisons. Those included had no pre-pandemic HTN diagnosis and no blood pressure-altering medication prescriptions; had body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure measurements before and during the

Budget impact of wastewater surveillance for COVID-19 in a large urban jail: an activity-based cost analysis.

BACKGROUND: Correctional facilities were disproportionately affected by SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) outbreaks. Wastewater surveillance programs (WSP) may provide early warnings of the presence of COVID-19 and facilitate the timely implementation of infection mitigation, but their budgetary implications for correctional systems remain unclear. METHODS: We conducted an activity-based costing analysis of a pilot WSP in a large urban jail. Costs borne by the jail were assessed and included start-up investments, implementation expenditures, and the costs of confirmatory polymerase chain reaction testing

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Childhood and Criminal Justice Involvement in Young Adulthood: A Prospective U.S. Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are overrepresented in the criminal justice system, and children and youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are at increased risk of engaging in rule-breaking and delinquent behaviors. This study investigated associations between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in childhood and criminal justice involvement in adolescence and young adulthood. METHODS: Data were from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a longitudinal U.S. population-based birth cohort study (N=2,733) that randomly sampled

Epidemiology and Three-Month Recurrence of Tinea Infections in a Prison: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Tinea infections are common dermatophyte infections with high recurrence rates, particularly in crowded institutional settings. Limited data exist on the epidemiology and recurrence patterns in prisons where environmental and behavioral risk factors are highly prevalent. Objective The objective of this study is to describe the epidemiology of tinea infections and characterize risk factor distribution in an incarcerated population with high recurrence rates. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 73 inmates at a prison in Baghdad, Iraq. Patients with clinically diagnosed

Hybrid transgastric NOTES for gallbladder-preserving cholecystolithotomy: a feasible and minimally invasive approach to gallstone management.

BACKGROUND: Cholecystectomy has traditionally been the mainstay of treatment for symptomatic gallstones; however, the complications of cholecystectomy have led to the adoption of minimally invasive gallbladder-preserving approaches in some patients. A simple but highly effective technique is currently lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of a novel endoscopic transgastric gallbladder-preserving cholecystolithotomy (GPC) for this condition. METHODS: This was a single-arm prospective clinical study involving 23 patients with symptomatic gallstones enrolled between Ju

Mapping the global prevalence and socioecological drivers of child sexual abuse: a systematic review and synthesis.

INTRODUCTION: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a widespread global health concern with lasting impacts. CSA is multifactorial and layered, and interventions to tackle CSA require an analysis of the key contributing factors. The main objective of this study was to explore global prevalence estimates of CSA and key contributing factors. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science for studies reporting lifetime prevalence of contact (eg, inappropriate touching or sexual acts) and non-contact (eg, exposure to sexual content or ill-intended conversations) CSA. Of 5493 articles

Overcoming barriers to HCV screening in Latin America: From evidence to action.

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection remains a major global public health challenge. Despite the availability of highly effective therapies capable of curing the vast majority of patients, millions remain undiagnosed and often present for medical care at advanced stages of disease. This delay not only increases mortality and the burden of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma but also affects quality of life, productivity, and healthcare system costs. In this context, screening emerges as a cornerstone for achieving HCV elimination. It enables the identification of hidden cases, early tr

Multidimensional Dissociation, Shame, Trauma and Ethnicity.

Dissociation can be regarded as a normal and complex set of mental phenomena that may operate within multiple conditions. This Institutional Review Board approved study examined a group of pre-professional/professional performing artists and college athletes (N = 687) and explored ethnic group differences in multidimensional symptoms of dissociation and shame, as well as cumulative trauma exposure, within four major ethnic groups: Black (14%), Asian (21%), White (43%), and Latinx (22%). The measures included a brief health and demographic screener, the Multiscale Dissociation Inventory, the In

From prediction to explanation: Is the relationship between youth psychopathy traits and continued offending in adulthood mediated by social environment?

Studies that focus on whether psychopathy statistically predicts reoffending are not informative of the process that connects the putative cause (psychopathy) to the expected outcome (offending). Understanding the causal mechanisms responsible for the relationship between psychopathy and offending has received minimal empirical attention even though fourth-generation risk assessment protocols and treatment strategies regularly require a specific focus on psychopathy. Theory can help guide an improved understanding of the causal mechanisms underlying the relationship between psychopathy and off

Cognitive Function among People with Severe Substance Use.

INTRODUCTION: Studies report a high variability of cognitive impairment in people who use drugs, ranging from 20% to 80%. Most research focuses on individuals who use drugs who are either admitted to treatment facilities or incarcerated and being abstinent from substances. The present study aimed to assess cognitive function among populations with ongoing, severe, habitual substance use, mimicking a real-world day-to-day situation. METHODS: Cross-sectional design with 171 participants (70.2% male) with severe substance use, recruited from two sites in Oslo, Norway. All participants were scree

Substance use disorder diagnoses as predictors of rule violations in a county detention center in the USA.

PURPOSE: Substance use disorder (SUD) is one of the most prevalent behavioral health conditions observed among adults processed into county detention centers and behavioral misconduct is a pressing concern in terms of the safety of correctional staff; however, little is known about the connection between these two important factors. The purpose of this study is to examine the association between specific SUDS and documented rule violations in a county jail in the USA. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: This prospective study used data collected from a random sample of 210 adults admitted to a small

Causes of death among people living in prison in Greece: A 9-year retrospective study (2010-2018) at the national prison hospital.

People living in prisons have higher mortality rates compared to the general population. We undertook a retrospective analysis of deaths recorded between 2010 and 2018 at the sole prison hospital in Greece (Korydallos Prison Special Health Centre for men) to assess the causes of death overall and by type of offence (drug-related or other), sociodemographic characteristics by cause of death, and mortality trends over time. Permission to access forensic reports and criminal files was obtained from the relevant authorities. Deaths were categorized as either non-natural (drug overdose, suicide, an

Prevalence and risk factors of viral hepatitis and HIV among people experiencing homelessness in Germany based on a nationwide study.

People experiencing homelessness (PEH) are at risk of contracting and transmitting infectious diseases. Data on PEH blood-transmitted virus prevalence and vaccination coverage is needed to design targeted interventions. A nationwide multicentre cross-sectional study of PEH was conducted. Clinical data were collected through questionnaire-based interviews, and blood samples were tested by serology and qPCR. Latent class analysis (LCA) identified subgroups of PEH, while univariable regressions identified risk factors of viral hepatitis. 643 PEH from four metropolitan areas in Germany were includ

Perceptions of persons deprived of liberty regarding tuberculosis vaccine research.

Several tuberculosis (TB) vaccine candidates are currently advancing to late-stage clinical trials. Prisons in low-and middle-income countries harbor some of the highest rates of TB in the world, making persons deprived of liberty (PDL) an important population to prioritize for the introduction of effective vaccines. However, the inclusion in clinical trials raises significant ethical concerns due to a history of exploitation and mistreatment within medical research. To date, PDL own perspectives on participating in vaccine research have been largely overlooked. This multicenter qualitative st
