Fifty-eight patients who had undergone meniscal surgery were reviewed. Half had undergone conventional open meniscectomy, and half had been treated by arthroscopic meniscectomy. Each patient in the open group was matched with a patient in the endoscopic group by age, sex, and type of meniscal lesion. Patients with ligamentous injuries were excluded. In a clinical follow-up study the postoperative results of 234 meniscus lesions treated by partial arthroscopic meniscectomy are analysed. After a period of 3-12 months 43% of cases were completely free of symptoms, in 50% the operation resulted in a significant relief of symptoms whereas 7% of the patients had unsatisfactory results. A review is presented of early results of a consecutive series of 45 bucket-handle or flap tears of a meniscus treated by closed partial meniscectomy over a two-year period. The mean operating time was 45 minutes. All patients were treated in hospital and 39 of 41 assessable patients were discharged within 24 hours of operation. Eighteen patients with achalasia of the cardia diagnosed by radiography, endoscopy, and manometry were subjected to forced pneumatic dilatation under fluoroscopic control. The procedure was uneventful in all but one patient who developed a pneumomediastinum which resolved on conservative management. The results of parathyroid exploration in a group of elderly patients with the diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism were compared with those in a younger group and were found to be similar with 92% cure rate and 3% permanent complication rate. The criteria for deciding to subject an elderly patient to parathyroid surgery should therefore the same in the elderly as in the younger patients and age per se should play no role in the decision. Life expectancy, on the other hand should be taken into account.

Little data exists relative to ongoing treatment of adolescent phencyclidine (PCP) abusers. This paper presents data gathered on a cohort of 87 residents in an adolescent social rehabilitation program. Approximately 50% of this cohort were either chronic or occasional PCP users. Both groups were found to be regular users of other drugs. Demographic characteristics are described, as are behaviors and symptoms reflective of various emotional and behavioral problems. This study aims to compare the efficacy and safety of terlipressin vs octreotide as an adjuvant to endoscopic management of patients with esophageal variceal bleeding in a real-time scenario. PURPOSE: To predict surgical difficulty during interval appendectomy for perforated appendicitis with abscess.
METHODS: The records of children diagnosed with appendiceal abscess who underwent interval appendectomy from 2012 to 2024 were reviewed. The clinical data associated with difficult surgeries (operative time > 2 h or addition of trocars) and uncomplicated surgeries were compared.
