Indications for resection: radical removal of the primary tumor, extrahepatic metastases are not manifest, unilateral involvement of the liver. Because of the increasing safety also of wide resections (lethality 0-8%) and the good quality of life after resection the range of indications has been extended: bilateral operations, intra- and extrahepatic dilatations, metastases at the portal or venous hilus, palliative resections, lymphectomy. Primary tumors: colon and rectum, kidney, corpus uteri, sarcomas and carcinoids of the gastrointestinal tract, selected cases of all kinds.

A case of hepatomegalia due to multiple metastases of unknown origin to the liver is described. At autopsy the primary tumor, an adenocarcinoid tumor of the appendix, was identified along with multiple metastases to the lymph nodes and widespread peritoneal carcinoidosis. Hepatic metastases from an appendiceal adenocarcinoid tumor has not been described previously. A case of tertiary syphilis is reported in which CT demonstrated liver involvement. There were calcifications in the liver indistinguishable from hepatic calcifications due to other diseases. Syphilitic gummata should be considered in the differential diagnosis of liver calcifications when the clinical history is appropriate.

Fifty-seven patients with chronic liver diseases of different etiology were treated with catergen ((+)-cyanidanol 3) given in a dose of 1.5 g (3 tablets) a day throughout 3 months. The findings were compared with those derived in the control groups of patients (82) who received vitamins or essentiale.
