An analysis of the clinicopathological features of 45 cases of desmoplastic, neural transforming and neurotropic melanoma assessed by a single pathologist are reported. The age range of 27 males and 18 females was 17-88 years. Twenty primary lesions (44%) were on the head and neck and fourteen (31%) were on the trunk. Thirty lesions (67%) were amelanotic. In order to examine the role of the erbB-2 oncogene in human breast cancer, gene amplification and expression were examined in multiple stages of tumor progression. Gene amplification ranging from 2-fold to 32-fold was found in 30 (29%) of 130 cases analyzed. Expression of the receptor-like gene product was determined by a combination of Western immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry. This cancer is rare (17-30%) and has the worst prognosis. In the interval 1970-1987 to the I-st Surgical Clinic of Iaşi were admitted and treated 648 patients with gastric cancers of which 98 (15.2%) with adenocarcinomas of the cardiac end of the stomach. In most patients the diagnosis was late: stage II and III-40 patients; stage IV-58 patients. Given the extension of the tumoral process, the exeresis was possible but in 36 cases (36.7%), as compared to 26-70% mentioned in the literature. The therapeutical management of these cases and the obtained results are presented.

To achieve the visualization of regional lymph nodes using lymphoscintigraphy, 100 preoperative patients with breast cancer were studied, with [99mTc]rhenium colloid having been injected into the periosteum of their ribs. We describe a case of severe early delayed radiation injury to the brainstem after curative radiotherapy using a standard therapeutic irradiation regimen for lymphoma of the base of the tongue with cervical lymphadenopathy. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a lesion in the brainstem corresponding to an area of neural tissue coincidentally irradiated. A literature review of this rare complication is presented.

We report a case of urachal carcinoma with elevated serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level in a 36-year-old man. En bloc resection was performed. The production of CEA was proved histologically. The level of serum CEA returned to the normal value after operation. From October 1973 through September 1979, 10,000 women were screened for breast cancer as part of a national project. In this follow-up analysis, we evaluate the current status of 166 women whose tumors were detected by this screening project (women with bilateral malignant neoplasms have been excluded). Mammogram abnormalities only were present in 55 women and abnormal physical findings with or without an abnormal mammogram were present in 111 women. The incidence of mediastinal node involvement of T1 non-small-cell bronchogenic carcinomas was determined in 262 patients for the period June 1981 to January 1986. All patients underwent mediastinoscopy as part of their evaluation. Thirty-five patients (13%) had clinical primary T1 lesions. Five histologically confirmed tumors of the carotid body and seven lymph node metastases in the area of the carotid bifurcation were investigated with real-time sonography. Lymphoscintigraphy was performed at 3 and 20 hr following subcutaneous injection of 131I anti-melanoma antibody (Fab) in 11 patients who had surgical resection of lymph nodes (neck, axilla, groin) at 24 hr for suspected metastatic melanoma.
