BACKGROUND: IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a fibroinflammatory condition marked by rapid clinical improvement after selective depletion of B lymphocytes with rituximab. This feature suggests that B cells might participate in fibrogenesis and wound healing.

A 14-year-old girl with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection developed exophthalmos and ocular muscle swelling. The EBV genome was detected in T lymphocytes taken from the submandibular gland, temporal muscle and cervical lymph nodes. A surface marker analysis of her peripheral blood demonstrated that CD45RO-positive T lymphocytes were strongly activated. Immunosuppressive treatment, including steroid and cyclophosphamide, was effective in improving the symptoms. Immunosuppressive therapy may be included as the choice of treatment for EBV infection.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) patients carry persistent measles virus infection in the brain. Furthermore, the blood lymphocytes contain viral RNA. Lymphocytes derived from 6 SSPE patients were stimulated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Production of antibodies against measles virus of the IgG isotype was detected in the supernatants of cell cultures of all patients, regardless of the disease's activity, duration or interferon therapy. In contrast, only some of these cell cultures also produced antibodies against myelin.

18 patients with acute non-lymphocytic leukaemia were treated with Prednimustine, a chlorambucil ester of prednisolone, as a single drug. 5 patients responded with falling blast counts in peripheral blood, but only 1 obtained a complete remission of 3 months' duration. Since the activity of Prednimustine is lower than that of other commonly used drugs in acute non-lymphocytic leukaemia, future studies should concentrate on other aspects, such as treatment of patients with steroid receptor-positive blast cells or other types of leukaemia.

Production of the lymphokine leucocyte inhibitory factor (LIF) by phytohaemagglutinin (PHA)-stimulated lymphocytes was assessed in 25 children with kwashiorkor. Although the lymphocytes of 12 of these patients produced adequate amounts of LIF, the rest of the group failed to produce lymphokine after PHA activation. A series of 10 novel analogues of fluphenazine (FPh) were synthesized. The characterization of a new monoclonal antibody (MoAb) recognizing a human B-cell activation antigen, designated FUN-1, is described in this paper. Properties and response smoking of aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) activity in various human tissues are reviewed. In the placenta, induction of AHH by smoking can be demonstrated unequivocally. AHH activity in lung samples is variable, but the relation to current or past smoking is unclear.
