Supporting prisoners with mental health needs in the transition to RESETtle in the community: the RESET study.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is linked to poor mental health and an increased likelihood of offending. People often lose accommodation when they enter prison and struggle to find accommodation upon release leading to an increased likelihood of relapse and reoffending. The RESET intervention was developed to support prisoners with mental health needs for 12 weeks after release to coordinate their transition into the community and obtaining secure housing. METHODS: The primary objective of the study was to assess the participants housing situation. A prospective cohort design followed up 62 prisone

PRISM: A Shelter-Based Partnership for People Experiencing Homelessness and Severe Mental Illness.

PRISM (Projet Réaffiliation Itinérance Santé Mentale [Homelessness Mental Health Reaffiliation Project]) is a clinical service developed through partnerships between shelters and the publicly funded Canadian health care system to address the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness and severe mental illness in Montreal. It provides inpatient treatment in a shelter setting for 2-3 months while helping clients find housing and appropriate longer-term support services. From program inception in November 2013 to May 2019, 52% of the 579 PRISM clients were in permanent housing after program d

Social Contact: Next Steps in an Effective Strategy to Mitigate the Stigma of Mental Illness.

People living with mental illnesses and their families may conceal their conditions to avoid prejudice and discrimination. Stigma often prevents people from receiving adequate health care and other social support services which could exacerbate social and health consequences such as unemployment, homelessness, substance use, and compulsory hospitalization. In this paper, we discuss social contact as a promising anti-stigma strategy for enhancing social interactions among people with mental illnesses, their families, and those without mental illnesses. In particularly, we consider next steps fo

Suicidal ideation in Iraq and Afghanistan veterans with mental health conditions at risk for homelessness.

Suicide prevention among Veterans is a national priority. Overlap exists between conditions that may increase risk for suicide (e.g., mental health conditions, financial stressors, lack of social support) and homelessness among Veterans. We examined predictors of variance in suicidal ideation (SI) among 58 Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans at risk for homelessness who were receiving residential mental health treatment. Participants were classified as SI nonendorsers (n = 36) or SI endorsers (n = 22), based on their Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) responses. Independent t tests and chi-square te

Explainable deep learning predictions for illness risk of mental disorders in Nanjing, China.

Epidemiological studies have revealed the associations of air pollutants and meteorological factors with a range of mental health conditions. However, little is known about local explanations and global understanding on the importance and effect of input features in the complex system of environmental stressors - mental disorders (MDs), especially for exposure to air pollution mixture. In this study, we combined deep learning neural networks (DLNNs) with SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) to predict the illness risk of MDs on the population level, and then provided explanations for risk facto

Mental health literacy in Arab states of the Gulf Cooperation Council: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Mental health literacy (MHL) has been relatively neglected, despite the increase of mental health illnesses worldwide, as well as within the Middle East region. A low level of MHL may hinder public acceptance of evidence-based mental health care. AIM: This systematic review aims to identify and appraise existing research, focusing on MHL among adults in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. METHODS: A systematic search of electronic databases (PubMed, PsychInfo, and Medline) was carried out from database inception to July 2019, in order to identify peer-reviewed journal a

Mental and physical health problems before and after detention: A matched cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with poor health are largely overrepresented in prison populations. However, it remains unclear whether their poor health status already exists prior to their detention or reflects an effect of detention. We examined the health of detainees in the year before and after their detention and compared this with the health of matched non-detainees. METHODS: In this matched cohort study, we linked national data on all persons detained in the Netherlands in 2014/2015 to electronic health records (EHR's) of a representative sample of general practitioners in the Netherlands. Somatic health care professionals' stigmatization of patients with mental disorder: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Patients with mental disorders have an increased risk of developing somatic disorders, just as they have a higher risk of dying from them. These patients often report feeling devaluated and rejected by health professionals in the somatic health care system, and increasing evidence shows that disparities in health care provision contribute to poor health outcomes. The aim of this review was to map and synthesize literature on somatic health professionals' stigmatization toward patients with mental disorders. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review using Arksey and O'Malley's framewo

Mental health symptoms and inflammatory markers among HIV infected patients in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: HIV and mental disorders are predicted to be the leading causes of illness worldwide by the year 2030. HIV-infected patients are at increased risk of developing mental disorders which are significantly associated with negative clinical outcomes and propagation of new HIV infections. There is little evidence that links inflammation to development of mental disorders among HIV patients. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to evaluate if mental health symptoms were associated with biomarkers of inflammation in HIV infected subjects. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was co

Collective Trauma and Mental Health in Adolescents: A Retrospective Cohort Study of the Effects of Retraumatization.

In the wake of the massive Canadian wildfire of May 2016 in the area of Fort McMurray Alberta, we observed increased rates of mental health problems, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in school-aged adolescents (ages 11-19). Surprisingly, we did not see these rates decline over the 3.5-year follow-up period. Additionally, our research suggested that the impact of this mass incident resulted in other unanticipated effects, including the finding that children who were not present for and relatively unaffected by the wildfire showed a similar PTSD symptom profile to children mor

Mental Illness, Mass Shootings, and the Future of Psychiatric Research into American Gun Violence.

This article outlines a four-part strategy for future research in mental health and complementary disciplines that will broaden understanding of mass shootings and multi-victim gun homicides. First, researchers must abandon the starting assumption that acts of mass violence are driven primarily by diagnosable psychopathology in isolated "lone wolf" individuals. The destructive motivations must be situated, instead, within larger social structures and cultural scripts. Second, mental health professionals and scholars must carefully scrutinize any apparent correlation of violence with mental ill

Emotion Regulation and Mental Health among Men with Childhood Sexual Abuse Histories.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a form of child maltreatment which has been increasingly recognized as a common experience among men. Research on male CSA remains under-developed but suggests many negative mental health impacts. The current study examined the link between mental health outcomes and different emotion regulation strategies among 69 adult men. Men completed measures on their current mental well-being, and participated in a clinical interview about emotion regulation strategies used to manage memories about their sexual victimization. Results indicated that the most frequently use
