Functionalized chitosan based antibacterial hydrogel sealant for simultaneous infection eradication and tissue closure in ocular injuries.

Management of infections at ocular injury often requires prolonged and high dose of antibiotic, which is associated with challenges of antibiotic resistance and bacterial biofilm formation. Tissue glues are commonly used for repairing ocular tissue defects and tissue regeneration, but they are ineffective in curing infection. There is a critical need for antibacterial ocular bio-adhesives capable of both curing infection and aiding wound closure. Herein, we present the development of an imine crosslinked N-(2-hydroxypropyl)-3-trimethylammonium chitosan chloride (HTCC)‑silver chloride nanocompo

Wild birds as potential bioindicators of environmental antimicrobial resistance: A preliminary investigation.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an issue of global concern that includes human, animal, and environmental health. To tackle this phenomenon, a One Health approach is required through the involvement of all these interconnected elements. The environment poses challenges for investigation, but wildlife animals, not directly exposed to antibiotic treatments and interacting with their habitats, can serve as indicators of AMR contamination. Specifically, wild birds could play a significant role in dissemination of AMR, as they can acquire AMR bacteria from wildlife reservoirs and disperse them th

Identification and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Campylobacter isolated from camel at municipal abattoirs in eastern Ethiopia.

Campylobacteriosis is an infectious zoonotic disease caused by the genus Campylobacter. The disease is transmitted from animals to humans predominantly through the consumption of contaminated food and water. However, the lack of information on the status of Campylobacter makes it difficult to quantify the role of camel meat in the dissemination of the pathogen. A cross-sectional study was conducted from June 2022 to August 2023 to investigate the occurrence of Campylobacter and associated risk factors and to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Campylobacter species from came

Postbiotic mediators derived from Lactobacillus species enhance riboflavin-mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy for eradication of Streptococcus mutans planktonic and biofilm growth.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus mutans has been implicated as a primary causative agent of dental caries and one of its important virulence properties is an ability to form biofilm on tooth surfaces. Thus, strategies to prevent and control S. mutans biofilms are requested. The present study aimed to examine the eradication of S. mutans planktonic and biofilm cells using riboflavin (Rib)-mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) enhanced by postbiotic mediators derived from Lactobacillus species. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal conc

Anti-biofilm and anti-glucosyltransferase effects of nano liposomal plant extracts against Streptococcus mutans.

The role of Streptococcus mutans in the initiation of caries is related to its acidogenicity, aciduricity, and polysaccharides extracellular layer production by glucosyltransferases in dental biofilms. Therefore, inhibition of glucosyltransferase activity impairs the virulence of cariogenic biofilms, which can be used to prevent dental caries. We evaluated the anti-bacterial, anti-biofilm, and anti-glucosyltransferases effects of nanoliposomal herbal aqueous extracts of Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra; G. glabra), Ginger (Zingiber officinale; Z. officinale), Pomegranate (Punica granatum; P. gran

Triggering antibacterial activity of a common plant by biosorption of selected heavy metals.

The presented study proposes an efficient utilization of a common Thymus serpyllum L. (wild thyme) plant as a highly potent biosorbent of Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions and the efficient interaction of the copper-laden plant with two opportunistic bacteria. Apart from biochars that are commonly used for adsorption, here we report the direct use of native plant, which is potentially interesting also for soil remediation. The highest adsorption capacity for Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions (qe = 12.66 and 53.13 mg g-1, respectively) was achieved after 10 and 30 min of adsorption, respectively. Moreover, the Cu-la

Antibiofilm and Antivirulence Potentials of 3,2'-Dihydroxyflavone against Staphylococcus aureus.

Staphylococcus aureus, particularly drug-resistant strains, poses significant challenges in healthcare due to its ability to form biofilms, which confer increased resistance to antibiotics and immune responses. Building on previous knowledge that several flavonoids exhibit antibiofilm activity, this study sought to identify a novel flavonoid capable of effectively inhibiting biofilm formation and virulence factor production in S. aureus strains including MRSA. Among the 19 flavonoid-like compounds tested, 3,2'-dihydroxyflavone (3,2'-DHF) was identified for the first time as inhibiting biofilm

Bioinorganic Chemistry Meets Microbiology: Copper(II) and Zinc(II) Complexes Doing the Cha-Cha with the C-t-CCL-28 Peptide, Dancing till the End of Microbes.

The necessity to move away from conventional antibiotic therapy has sparked interest in antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). One fascinating example is human CCL-28 chemokine produced by acinar epithelial cells in the salivary glands. It can also be released into the oral cavity with saliva, playing a crucial role in oral protection. The C-terminal domain of CCL-28 possesses antifungal and antibacterial properties, which are likely linked to membrane disruption and enzyme leakage. Studies suggest that AMPs can become more potent after they have bound Cu(II) or Zn(II). In many cases, these ions are e

A rapid microwave approach for 'one-pot' synthesis of antibiotic conjugated silver nanoparticles with antimicrobial activity against multi-drug resistant bacterial pathogens.

Deaths directly attributable to drug-resistant infections reached 1.27 million in 2019 and continue to rise. This escalating resistance to antibiotics has driven a resurgence in the exploration of ancient antimicrobials to develop efficacious alternatives. The modern field of nanomaterials is a promising area of research with silver nanoparticles performing well as antimicrobial agents due to their large surface area and multiple bacterial targets. In the current study antibiotic conjugated silver nanoparticles (3-35 nm) were synthesized using β-lactam antibiotic, ampicillin. The method of hea

Dereplication of Natural Product Antifungals via Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry and Chemical Genomics.

Recently expanded reports of multidrug-resistant fungal infections underscore the need to develop new and more efficient methods for antifungal drug discovery. A ubiquitous problem in natural product drug discovery campaigns is the rediscovery of known compounds or their relatives; accordingly, we have integrated Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for structural dereplication and Yeast Chemical Genomics for bioprocess evaluation into a screening platform to identify such compounds early in the screening process. We identified 450 fractions inhibiting Candida albicans and

Is Silver Addition to Scaffolds Based on Polycaprolactone Blended with Calcium Phosphates Able to Inhibit Candida albicans and Candida auris Adhesion and Biofilm Formation?

Candida spp. periprosthetic joint infections are rare but difficult-to-treat events, with a slow onset, unspecific symptoms or signs, and a significant relapse risk. Treatment with antifungals meets with little success, whereas prosthesis removal improves the outcome. In fact, Candida spp. adhere to orthopedic devices and grow forming biofilms that contribute to the persistence of this infection and relapse, and there is insufficient evidence that the use of antifungals has additional benefits for anti-biofilm activity. To date, studies on the direct antifungal activity of silver against Candi
