Submerged cultures were used to identify growth-limiting nutrients by Antrodia cinnamomea strains. The mycelial biomass and EPS production by A. cinnamomea BCRC 35396 were markedly higher than other A. cinnamomea strains. Beijing's motor vehicle emission inventory based on GIS technology was developed, and used to estimate the contribution rate of different types of vehicles and different areas of vehicles to the total vehicular emissions in the urban area of Beijing. ISCST3, a gaussian dispersion air quality model, was modified at low wind speed condition, and then used to facilitate the study of the spatial and temporal distribution of CO and NOx concentrations in Beijing. The physiological significance of the release of NO by endothelial cells was discussed according to the effects of inhibitors of NO formation and to the observations of Mellander et al. on the reactivity of resistance vessels in cat skeletal muscle. Whole results indicate that NO continually takes patent arteries and decreases systemic resistances. However, NO has minimal effects on the arteriolar side of the vascular tree.

A microorganism with the ability to form L-tryptophan from D,L-5-(3-indolyl-methyl)hydantoin (D,L-5-IMH) was isolated and identified as Arthrobacter sp. (DSM 3747). After isolation of a mutant with high tryptophan production activity but low tryptophan degradation, cultural conditions were optimized to achieve high amounts of biomass with good specific activities concerning the enzymatic hydantoin-cleaving reactions. We have evaluated the cooling rates of specimens mounted in a variety of freeze-fracture holders when plunged into a series of liquid coolants. these rates were measured using miniature thermocouples placed within the mounted specimens. The most rapid cooling rates were obtained using propane at 83 K as the coolant. When mounted on a newly devised 'copper sandwich' holder, specimen cooling rates in excess of 4500 K/s have been recorded. A simple guillotine-like device for quenching freeze-fracture specimens under reproducible conditions is presented.
