Cigarette Smoking in Persons Living with Hepatitis C: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 1999-2014.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is common in persons living with hepatitis C (hepatitis C+), but national statistics on this harmful practice are lacking. A better understanding of smoking behaviors in hepatitis C+ individuals may help in the development of targeted treatment strategies. METHODS: We extracted data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 1999 and 2014. Hepatitis C+ were compared with hepatitis C- adults in the entire sample and in the subset of current smokers. Measures included demographics, current smoking, cigarettes/day, nicotine dependence

Cardiovascular effects of bariatric surgery.

Obesity is a major global health problem, and its multisystem effects are inextricably linked with elevated cardiovascular risk and adverse outcomes. The cardiovascular benefits of reversing obesity in adults are well-established. Compared with other weight-loss strategies, programmes that incorporate bariatric surgery for weight loss are beneficial for sustained BMI reduction. A marked improvement in cardiovascular risk factors, including hypertension, dyslipidaemia, inflammation, and type 2 diabetes mellitus, has been observed after bariatric surgery. This broad improvement in cardiovascular

FAT PHOBIA IN MEXICAN NUTRITION STUDENTS.

Nutritionists play a major role in the prevention and treatment of obesity. Currently, fat phobia among nutrition students and health workers is resulting in health and social consequences. The aim of this study was to assess the fat phobia among nutrition college students of two schools from different regions in Mexico. Six hundred and thirty 18 to 25 yo nutrition students participated in the study. Fat phobia was assessed using the F-scale, containing 14 pairs of adjectives that described people with obesity. Participants achieved a mean F-scale score of 3.45, which could be considered a mod

Recent research on the growth plate: Impact of inflammatory cytokines on longitudinal bone growth.

Children with inflammatory diseases usually display abnormal growth patterns as well as delayed puberty. This is a result of several factors related to the disease itself, such as malnutrition, hypercortisolism, and elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. These factors in combination with glucocorticoid treatment contribute to growth retardation during chronic inflammation by systemically affecting the major regulator of growth, the GH/IGF1 axis. However, recent studies have also shown evidence of a direct effect of these factors at the growth plate level. In conditions of chronic infla

Self-insertion of a nasogastric tube for home enteral nutrition: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Enteral tube feeding can be a source of discomfort and reluctance from patients. We evaluated for the first time the tolerability of self-insertion of a nasogastric (NG) tube for home enteral nutrition (EN). MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients requiring enteral tube feeding for chronic diseases were enrolled in a therapeutic patient education (TPE) program at Nancy University Hospital. RESULTS: In our department, between November 2008 and August 2012, 66 patients received EN with an NG tube. Twenty-nine of 66 had self-insertion of the NG tube (median age, 44 years), 17 had an ana

Carer and staff perspectives on supplementary suckling for treating infant malnutrition: qualitative findings from Malawi.

Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in infants aged <6 months is a major global health problem. Supplementary suckling (SS) is widely recommended as an inpatient treatment technique for infant <6 months SAM. Its aim is to re-establish effective exclusive breastfeeding. Despite widespread support in guidelines, research suggests that field use of SS is limited in many settings. In this study, we aimed therefore to describe and understand the barriers and facilitating factors to SS as a treatment technique for infant SAM. We conducted qualitative interviews and focus group discussions in a hospital

Interventions for dysphagia and nutritional support in acute and subacute stroke.

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia (swallowing problems) are common after stroke and can cause chest infection and malnutrition. Dysphagic, and malnourished, stroke patients have a poorer outcome. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of interventions for the treatment of dysphagia (swallowing therapy), and nutritional and fluid supplementation, in patients with acute and subacute (within six months from onset) stroke. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Stroke Group Trials Register (February 2012), MEDLINE (1966 to July 2011), EMBASE (1980 to July 2011), CINAHL (1982 to July 2011) and Conference

Biotin deficiency in a glycogen storage disease type 1b girl fed only with glycogen storage disease-related formula.

Glycogen storage disease type I is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by the defect in the glucose-6-phosphate enzyme system. Frequent intake of glucose-containing glycogen storage disease formula, uncooked cornstarch, or both, are usually needed to maintain normal blood glucose level. We report a glycogen storage disease type 1b girl with biotin deficiency caused by an exclusive glucose-containing glycogen storage disease formula for years, presenting with the appearance of severe skin lesions, and diagnosed by urinary organic acid analysis by gas chromato-spectrometry, and blood acylcarn

Giardiasis and other intestinal parasitic infections in relation to anthropometric indicators of malnutrition: a large, population-based survey of schoolchildren in Tehran.

The morbidity of intestinal parasitic infections is greatest among children of school age and may have an adverse effect on growth. In the present, cross-sectional study, the association between previously undiagnosed intestinal parasitic infections and growth was assessed in 19,209 children attending elementary schools in Tehran. The physical growth of these children was investigated by recording body weights, heights and weight-for-age Z scores. Faecal samples were collected and each checked for intestinal parasites using four methods (the microscopical examination of a smear stained with Lu

The prevalence of low hemoglobin values among new infantry recruits and nonlinear relationship between hemoglobin concentration and physical fitness.

There is limited information regarding the optimal hemoglobin level for physical activity and most studies followed relatively few participants. The object of this study was to assess iron storage levels in a population of healthy young males and their impact on physical fitness. Blood samples were drawn from 358 consenting infantry recruits for hemoglobin, iron, ferritin, transferrin, folic acid, and B(12) levels. A detailed medical and nutritional history was noted. Recruits performed a field fitness test including a 2,000-m run. Mean hemoglobin was 13.8 +/- 1.0 g/dl. Level of hemoglobin low

A pilot study of a ketogenic diet in patients with Lafora body disease.

PURPOSE: Lafora body disease (LBD) is severe and rapidly worsening progressive myoclonus epilepsy (PME), not treatable with specific therapy. In LBD patients, typical polyglucosan accumulations result from alterations of proteins involved in the regulation of glycogen metabolism. Thus, a ketogenic regimen might reasonably be expected to counteract the disease progression. We set out to assess the feasibility and tolerability of a long-term ketogenic diet (KD) in LBD patients and to make a preliminary evaluation of its effect on the disease course. METHODS: We treated five LBD patients with KD

The significance of under- or overweight during childhood as a risk factor for hypertensive diseases in pregnancy.

Hypertensive diseases in pregnancy are still a major cause of foetal and maternal mortality. Known risk factors allow identification of only a small number of patients at risk of developing such a complication. However, better knowledge of the risk profile would improve an early adequate monitoring of these pregnancies. We therefore investigated the correlation between under- or overweight during childhood and the development of hypertensive diseases during pregnancy. The study was designed as a cross-sectional case control study. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 2600 women

Diagnostic methods for the detection of anterograde aspiration in enterally fed patients.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The diagnosis of aspiration and its origin in patients on enteral tube feeding is challenging to the physician and provides an important means to prevent pneumonia. This review examines the most recent studies and developments in the field with an approach to the technical aspects of diagnostic methods. RECENT FINDINGS: The methods more commonly used to detect anterograde aspiration in clinical practice are fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing and modified barium swallowing. Recent studies have shown that although these methods may provide the diagnosis of aspirat

Feeding and hydration issues for older adults with dementia.

All cultures dictate the need to feed the hungry and create rituals for almost every life passage around the consumption of food and beverage. Yet, in old age and among those who cannot advocate for themselves, mealtime is medicalized and demoted to an insignificant event without dignity or regard for individualized needs. Attention must be paid to not only what people eat, but how they eat, and how they are supported in that process. Kayser-Jones summarized the extensive findings of several ethnographic studies in nursing homes by noting the multi-factorial issues involved in delivering excel

Children orphaned by AIDS: a global perspective.

Internationally, the orphan crisis caused by the human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) pandemic remains a serious issue with long-term social consequences. At the end of 2001, an estimated 14 million children worldwide had lost their mother or both parents to AIDS or related causes. Sub-Saharan Africa is the most severely affected, accounting for more than 80 percent of those orphaned as a result of AIDS. Without the care of parents or an appointed caregiver, children are likely to face extraordinary risks of malnutrition, poor health, inadequate schooling,
