Myopia progression in children and adolescents: impact of COVID-19 pandemic and current and future control strategies.

Myopia is a significant and growing public health problem with typical onset or progression during childhood adolescence. High myopia has lifelong impact on ocular health and socio-economic aspects of patients 'lives. COVID-19 lockdown resulted in demonstrable increase in incidence and progression rate of myopia in children and adolescence. Low dose atropine and Orthokeratology contact lenses appear to be most effective in slowing down myopia progression. Rebound progression after stopping both modalities were reported. Defocus modifying spectacle lenses and contact lenses are less effective b

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on ICU clinical trials: a description of one research team's experience.

BACKGROUND: Disruptions to clinical trials conducted in the intensive care unit (ICU) due to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2; coronavirus disease 2019 [COVID-19]) pandemic included fewer new trials activated and more trials stopped. While a number of ongoing, non-COVID-19 clinical trials remained open to enrollment, the direct impact of the pandemic on ICUs instilled chaos in this already challenging environment. The numerous challenges need to be reported so investigators can proactively plan and manage these myriad challenges. Thus, the purpose of this study wa

The COVID-19 pandemic and obsessive-compulsive disorder: a systematic review of comparisons between males and females.

Coronavirus disease, one of the most disastrous epidemics, has caused a worldwide crisis, and the containment measures applied to decelerate the progression of the pandemic can increase the risk of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Identifying vulnerable groups in this area can lead us to better resource expenditure, and therefore, this systematic review aims to make a comparison between males and females to determine which of the two groups was most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic regarding OCD. Also, a meta-analysis was designed to investigate the prevalence of OCD during the COVID-19 p

Associations of Mental Health and Experience of the COVID-19 Pandemic with United States Adults' Intentions to Be Vaccinated.

COVID-19 vaccine uptake in the United States has proved challenging. A deeper characterization extending beyond demographics and political ideologies of those hesitating or resisting is needed to guide ongoing conversations. This study examined associations between US adults' vaccination intentions and mental health history, experience of the COVID-19 pandemic, and mental health outcomes. An online population-based cross-sectional survey was administered nationwide during January 4-7, 2021. Participants were questioned about past and current mental health, and completed the Patient Health Ques

RSTN COVID Hand: Hand trauma in the United Kingdom and Europe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly impacted the delivery of hand surgery services throughout the UK and Europe; from triage to treatment. Our aim was to assess the impact on management of common hand trauma injuries to inform future service delivery and research. The Reconstructive Surgery Trials Network led a service evaluation during the first wave of COVID-19 in 2020. Data was collected on hand injury management during the COVID-19 pandemic and was compared to the management clinicians would have delivered prior. Across 35 hand surgery units, 2540 patients with hand trauma were included. There w

The representative COVID-19 cohort Munich (KoCo19): from the beginning of the pandemic to the Delta virus variant.

BACKGROUND: Population-based serological studies allow to estimate prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infections despite a substantial number of mild or asymptomatic disease courses. This became even more relevant for decision making after vaccination started. The KoCo19 cohort tracks the pandemic progress in the Munich general population for over two years, setting it apart in Europe. METHODS: Recruitment occurred during the initial pandemic wave, including 5313 participants above 13 years from private households in Munich. Four follow-ups were held at crucial times of the pandemic, with response rate

Impact on the Volume of Pathology Reports Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic in SEER Cancer Registries.

INTRODUCTION: Health care procedures including cancer screening and diagnosis were interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The extent of this impact on cancer care in the United States is not fully understood. We investigated pathology report volume as a reflection of trends in oncology services pre-pandemic and during the pandemic. METHODS: Electronic pathology reports were obtained from 11 U.S. central cancer registries from NCI's SEER Program. The reports were sorted by cancer site and document type using a validated algorithm. Joinpoint regression was used to model temporal trends from

The Impact of COVID-19 on Anxiety Disorders in Youth: Coping with Stress, Worry, and Recovering from a Pandemic.

The primary objective of this article is to consider the impact of the coronavirus disease-19 pandemic on pediatric anxiety from both a clinical and system-of-care lens. This includes illustrating the impact of the pandemic on pediatric anxiety disorders and consideration of factors important for special populations, including children with disabilities and learning differences. We consider the clinical, educational, and public health implications for addressing mental health needs like anxiety disorders and how we might promote better outcomes, particularly for vulnerable children and youth.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Infective Endocarditis Management and Outcomes: Analysis of a National Clinical Database.

COVID-19 has widely affected health care delivery, but its impact on the management of infective endocarditis (IE), including valve surgery, is uncertain. We compared the national trends in admissions, demographics, and outcomes of IE before and after COVID-19 onset, using a national sample of IE admissions between 2016 and 2022 from the Vizient Clinical Database. The pre-COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 time periods were separated by the start of the second quarter of 2020, the time during which the COVID-19 pandemic was declared. For all admissions and for admissions involving valve surgery, pre-C

Assessing Acne Severity: Teledermatology Versus Face to Face Consultations During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris is a common skin disorder in pilosebaceous units that is self-limited, especially in adolescents. This disease not only causes permanent physical complications but also psychosocial effects that harm the quality of life. Telemedicine has grown its popularity in recent years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Store and Forward (SAF) teledermatology using digital cameras has also increased patient service satisfaction, promising diagnostic reliability, and clinical outcomes similar to face-to-face visits. OBJECTIVE: We sought to compare the severity of acne vulg

Comparison of Guillain-Barre Syndrome Cases during and Prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Multicentric Study.

BACKGROUND: Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is one of the most common neurological manifestations associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Although data for a strong causal association is lacking, anecdotal reports, case series and systematic reviews linking the two have emerged in the literature. This prompted us to compare the clinical features, electrophysiology, and outcomes of GBS cases presenting during the pandemic with cases reported during a similar time period prior to the pandemic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospective data of GBS cases dia
