OBJECTIVES: Visually-induced motion sickness (VIMS) remains an unsolved issue when using head-mounted displays (HMD) in immersive virtual reality (VR) systems. We investigate the influence of restricted visual field on sensorimotor incongruence of postural control in an immersive VR environment, as a surrogate marker of VIMS while standing steadily and viewing ambiguous optical-flow visual stimuli.
METHODS: Twenty-seven healthy participants wore HMD and viewed optical flow visual stimuli (called the plaid motion pattern) using a VR system. Visual stimuli were presented on a full-screen displa

Sarcopenia, characterized by progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function, is a major contributor to disability, falls, and reduced quality of life in older adults. Degenerative scoliosis is also increasingly prevalent with aging and is associated with spinal instability, postural imbalance, and chronic pain. Despite their frequent coexistence, the interaction between sarcopenia and scoliosis remains poorly explored. Thus, this study aimed to highlight the bidirectional relationship between sarcopenia and scoliosis in older adults and to discuss its clinical and rehabilitat

Robotic surgery has been associated with improved ergonomics compared with conventional laparoscopy. However, most studies have focused on the console surgeon, and its impact on other members of the operative team remains poorly understood. We conducted an exploratory prospective observational study with repeated procedure-level assessments including robotic and conventional laparoscopic upper gastrointestinal and colorectal procedures performed from September 2024 to March 2025. After each operation, primary surgeons and surgical assistants completed a structured questionnaire assessing perce

The brain contributes to maintaining balance both while standing and during step initiation, where cortical preparatory activity and sensory modulation may be tuned to the task goal. Standing requires maintaining postural equilibrium, whereas stepping involves propelling the body toward a target while preserving stability. These demands change with the intended step direction, suggesting that cortical processing may be flexibly adjusted according to directional goals. Foot-sole cutaneous receptors are relevant to postural control, as they signal load distribution that supports upright posture

Objectives: Few studies have previously shown an interaction between feet and gaze in postural control. The aim of the current study is to more specifically examine how vertical heterophoria (VH) varies with stimulation of the mechanoreceptors in the foot sole. A new method is proposed for fast assessment of minimum VH, especially when values are less than 1/2 diopter (pD). Methods: The Maddox rod test was used to assess VH with a new device made of a small point source of light located in the center of a circular box that enables the measurement of minimum VH. The VH assessment was based on a

Around 8 million children with functional disabilities in India need postural support wheelchair designs. This study tests the durability and usability of a new tilt-in-space, postural support wheelchair design for children. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) wheelchair durability testing was followed by a mixed-method observational field with a purposively selected, diverse sample of children aged 3-17 with varying diagnoses needing a tilt-in-space wheelchair in the rural and urban community settings in South India. Children were fitted with appropriate size wheelchairs.

BACKGROUND: Postural instability and gait difficulties (PIGD) are a significant cause of falls, and immobility in Parkinson's disease (PD). Most gait assessments are based on assessing forward walking compared to retro walking. Retro walking is more difficult because of absence of visual cues, and more complex multisensory processing. Little is known about clinical PIGD motor features, mobility and body composition correlates of retro-walking compared to forward walking in PD.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between retro and forward walking and PIGD in PD.
METHODS: 78 PD underwent cl

BACKGROUND: The instrumented modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance (i-mCTSIB) assesses sensory contributions to postural control using Center of Pressure (CoP) data. Existing composite scores do not reflect task difficulty or sensory weighting across conditions.
OBJECTIVES: This study developed a regression-based new composite score and examined its ability to discriminate walking independence and its correlation with standard balance measures in subacute stroke.
METHODS: This study included 54 patients with first-ever stroke. Postural control was evaluated under four i-mC

PURPOSE: Dubousset et al. proposed that the "cone of economy" (COE) in the inverted pendulum model of human standing increases in size significantly in patients with balance impairment. The clinical significance of COE size measured by motion capture as a postural sway index in adult spinal deformity (ASD) patients remains unclear.
METHODS: Twenty-three patients undergoing ASD surgery in a single institution as well as five healthy male participants were enrolled. The motion-capture of the surface reflection markers above the C7 and S1 spinous processes was performed using infrared cameras, a

Objective. In this paper, we propose a novel neural network architecture, the convolutional spider neural network (CS-Net), combined with a transfer learning (TL) strategy, to classify hybrid gestures that integrate wrist postures and hand movements.Approach.The CS-Net framework incorporates diverse surface electromyography (sEMG) features, including raw signals and FFT representations, through a multi-stream information fusion mechanism to enhance classification performance. The proposed TL strategy involves pre-training the model on specific wrist postures and fine-tuning it on the full set o

BACKGROUND: Essential tremor is hypothesized to emerge from synchronized oscillatory activity within the cerebello-thalamo-cortical circuit. However, this hypothesis has not yet been tested using local field potentials directly recorded from the thalamus alongside signals from both the cortex and cerebellum, leaving a gap in the understanding of essential tremor.
OBJECTIVES: To clarify the importance of cerebello-thalamo-cortical oscillatory coupling for essential tremor.
METHODS: We investigated oscillatory coupling between thalamic local field potentials and simultaneously recorded magneto

BACKGROUND: Upper limb exoskeletons are recommended to alleviate muscle fatigue, particularly in working conditions inducing musculoskeletal discomfort like overhead work. However, wearing an exoskeleton might introduce cognitive-motor interference, affecting performance. Understanding its neural impact and potential gender differences in design effects is crucial. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine exoskeleton effects addressing cross-gender comparisons, and exploring the impact on cognitive and physical workload in real-world scenarios. The research questions address the impact o

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and globus pallidus internus (GPi) is an accepted therapy for Parkinson's disease (PD) with disabling motor complications. For elderly patients with poorer cognition and postural instability, GPi has been proposed as the preferable DBS target based on expert opinion, arguing GPi-DBS may be less complicated by depression, apathy, worsened verbal fluency, and executive dysfunction, resulting in greater improvement in quality of life (QoL). However, data supporting such patient-tailored approach are lacking.
