Exposure of the thyroid gland to ionizing radiation has been associated with a variety of abnormalities. Among these are tardive hypothyroidism and an increased risk of developing thyroid nodules and cancer. Although acute thyroiditis has been known to complicate radioactive iodine 131 therapy, it has rarely been associated with external beam irradiation. Thyrotoxic painless thyroiditis developed in two patients after mantle-field irradiation for Hodgkin's disease.

Pretreatment radiographs were taken using a paralleling device and measurement grid. The measurement controls obtained in that manner in 60 teeth were compared to measurements obtained from conventional radiographs taken during endodontic treatment. This study was undertaken to test the proposal that pretreatment radiographs taken with a paralleling device and measurement grid would make further radiographs for that purpose unnecessary, thus reducing patients' exposure to ionizing radiation.

The application of wide aperture scanners to neuroradiology permits improved anatomic definition and localization of intracranial and intraorbital lesions. Coronal scans are most useful in demonstrating lesions of the skull base and apex, distinguishing between infra- and supratentorial lesions, and in determining if a lesion is intra- or extraaxial. Limitations of coronal scans include discomfort in positioning, high spatial frequency artifacts, and additional radiation exposure.

Fibroblasts from New Zealand Black mouse fetuses manifest increased frequency of chromosomal breaks and interchanges after exposure to ultraviolet radiation when compared with cells from BABL/c fetuses. This chromosomal instability is similar to what has been reported in cells from patients with xeroderma pigmentosum and may be related to the chromosomally abnormal clones and malignancy previously reported in adult New Zealand Black mice.

Lip squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) accounts for 12% of all head and neck cancers. It is caused by chronic exposure to ultraviolet light solar radiation and related to previous actinic cheilitis (AC). This study aimed to investigate the immunostaining of the putative cancer stem cells (CSC) markers ALDH1 and CD44 in AC (n=30) and LSCC (n=20). ALDH1 positivity was found to be statistically higher in LSCC than in AC lesions (p=0.0045), whilst CD44 expression was statistically higher in AC than in LSCC lesions (p=0.0155). In many institutions, device closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in adult patients is only performed once to twice per year. This report describes an interventional PDA closure procedure being effectively assisted by transaortic phased-array imaging, also known as intracardiac echocardiography (ICE). This way, well-known advantages of ICE as are lowering of radiation exposure and fluoroscopy time can potentially be transferred to PDA device closure.

Treatment of high-flow priapism varies and has included transcatheter embolization when conservative approaches fail. We present the case of an 8-year-old boy with high-flow priapism, who was treated with ultrasound-guided thrombin injection because of encouraging experience with the method obtained when treating aneurysms and pseudoaneurysms. This procedure appears to be a useful alternative to transcatheter embolization and results in no radiation exposure.

Xeroderma pigmentosum is a group of rare autosomal recessive disorders with defective DNA repair that provide insight into the basic mechanism of carcinogenesis. It is the best human model linking clinical abnormalities and neoplasia to carcinogen exposure. The case of a patient with pathologic Stage 1A Hodgkin disease is reported in whom subacute paraneoplastic myelopathy developed before treatment. Myelography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and lumbar puncture examination showed no evidence of central nervous system involvement. The patient was treated with combination chemotherapy (to avoid spinal cord exposure to radiation) without neurologic improvement. The patient's neurologic condition responded well to intrathecal dexamethasone.
