Assessment of feeding and mealtime behavior problems in persons with mental retardation.

Feeding and mealtime behavior problems are commonly observed among individuals with developmental disabilities. These problems include, but are not limited to, food refusal, food selectivity, mealtime aggression, rumination, pica, and insufficient feeding skills. Difficulties of this type can be associated with life-threatening consequences of other serious health-related problems. Because of the nature of these problems and the lack or accurate client self-reporting, an interdisciplinary assessment in addition to a thorough behavioral assessment is recommended to ensure the best quality of ca

Re-examination of the role of the Brucella melitensis HtrA stress response protease in virulence in pregnant goats.

Based on previously reported studies describing the experimental infection of pregnant goats with B. melitensis strain RWP5, we proposed that the HtrA protease plays an important role in the virulence of B. melitensis in its natural ruminant host. Subsequent studies, however, have shown that RWP5 is actually an htrA cycL double mutant. In order to definitively evaluate the role of the B. melitensis htrA in virulence, we constructed an authentic htrA mutant and examined this strain in pregnant goats. The findings of these studies indicate that the contribution of the htrA gene product to the vi

Detection of circulating antigen in sera of Fasciola gigantica-infected cattle with antibodies reactive with a Fasciola-specific 88-kDa antigen.

Antibodies against a specific 88-kDa antigen of Fasciola gigantica were used for the detection of circulating antigen in the sera of cattle with experimental and natural infections of F. gigantica by a double antibody ELISA. Circulating antigen was detectable as early as the second and third weeks after infection and positive absorbance values were obtained for the entire duration of infection. Absorbance values decreased below the cutoff point 3 weeks after chemotherapy with oxyclozanide. This immunoassay also greatly enhanced the specificity of immunodiagnosis of fasciolosis in naturally inf

The endocrinology of parturition in the mare.

The endocrinology of late gestation and parturition in the mare has been described, but unlike other domestic animal species, the factors that initiate parturition in the mare have not been elucidated. In contrast to ruminant species, maternal estrogen and progesterone concentrations do not change markedly, and a well-defined fetal cortisol surge is not observed just prior to parturition in the mare. Parturition is associated with large increases in prostaglandin and oxytocin concentrations, which induce uterine contractions and delivery of the foal. There are many methods of inducing parturit

Experimentally induced lactic acidosis in the goat.

Lactic acidosis was produced experimentally twice in each of 4 adult, female goats, by giving sucrose orally at the rate of 18 g/kg bodyweight. Changes in pH, osmolality, lactic acid concentration, and other constituents in ruminal fluid, plasma and blood were monitored over a period of 48 h. Also changes in urinary pH and sediment were examined. To ameliorate the metabolic disturbance, calcium hydroxide and bicarbonate treatment was employed after the 24 h samples had been collected and their acid-base status determined. A feature of the disturbance in the goats was that a metabolic alkalosis

The influence of stress upon symptom structure.

Evaluated the influence of stress on the factor structure of symptoms in a nonclinical population. A random sample of 299 persons in the process of divorcing were subdivided into those high and low on stressful life events. Separate factor analyses of symptoms for each group provided evidence that stress does affect symptom structure. Ruminative Depression was the only stable factor. Two anxiety factors from the low stress group merged into one factor among the high stressed, while agitated depression appeared only in the low stress condition. A factor suggestive of stress response syndrome wa

Personality profiles of physically impaired adolescents.

Investigated MMPI profiles between two groups of adolescents with dissimilar disabilities (cleft lip/palate, orthopedic) who displayed observable physical impairment. The findings support the contention that type of disability has differential effects on adolescent personality characteristics. However, the profile elevations are consistent with previous reports of behavioral inhibition in both disability groups. Adolescents with impairments of the cleft lip/palate display greater self-concern and ruminative self-doubt over interpersonal interactions. The orthopedically impaired group exhibit a

The Most Important Metabolic Diseases in Dairy Cattle during the Transition Period.

This review paper provides an in-depth analysis of three critical metabolic diseases affecting dairy cattle such as subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA), ketosis, and hypocalcemia. SARA represents a disorder of ruminal fermentation that is characterized by extended periods of depressed ruminal pH below 5.5-5.6. In the long term, dairy herds experiencing SARA usually exhibit secondary signs of the disease, such as episodes of laminitis, weight loss and poor body condition despite adequate energy intake, and unexplained abscesses usually 3-6 months after an episode of SARA. Depressed milk-fat conten

Winter activity and virus infection of Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in German livestock housing before and during the 2024 BTV-3 outbreak.

BACKGROUND: Despite its importance for Culicoides-borne disease risk assessment, the winter activity of species of this biting midge genus remains poorly characterized. Moreover, information on virus circulation in winter-active Culicoides vectors, both under endemic conditions and during outbreaks, is almost non-existent. METHODS: UV-light traps to collect Culicoides biting midges were operated once a week for 24 h in cattle, sheep, goat and horse stables at 12 to 55 locations during four consecutive winter periods (November 1 to March 31, 2021 to 2025) throughout Germany. Collected females

EFFECT OF FOUR DIFFERENT PRESERVATIVES ON AUTOFLUORENCE AND PEANUT AGGLUTIN LECTIN BINDING CHARACTERISTICS OF HAEMONCHUS EGGS.

Haemonchus contortus is the most economically important trichostrongyle nematode infecting various ruminants. Fecal egg counts are used to measure the intensity of trichostrongyle infections, but egg morphology alone can't differentiate Haemonchus eggs from the other less pathogenic trichostrongyle genera also infecting ruminants. The lectin, peanut agglutinin (PNA), binds selectively to Haemonchus eggs and has become a useful tool for diagnosing Haemonchus infections during fecal egg counts. Unfortunately, this binding is not stable when eggs are stored either within fecal samples or when iso

Effects of Perovskia abrotanoides Kar. Essential Oil on Greenhouse Gas Mitigation and Energy Efficiency Improvement in Sheep Rumen: An In Vitro Study.

BACKGROUND: The use of natural additives in animal nutrition, particularly for ruminants, has gained attention due to environmental concerns and the need to improve rumen fermentation efficiency. Essential oils are bioactive sources that can modulate rumen microbes and reduce methane production, a major greenhouse gas and source of energy loss. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to characterize the chemical composition of Perovskia abrotanoides Kar. essential oil and evaluate its potential as a natural rumen modifier by assessing its effects on in vitro rumen fermentation parameters, gas and methan

Supplementing Mannan Oligosaccharide Reduces the Passive Transfer of Immunoglobulin G and Improves Antioxidative Capacity, Immunity, and Intestinal Microbiota in Neonatal Goats.

Successful establishment of passive immunity (PIT) and regulation of intestinal microbiota are crucial for ruminants to maintain body health and reduce the risk of disease during the neonatal period. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) supplementation on passive transfer of immunoglobulin G (IgG), serum inflammatory cytokines and antioxidant levels as well as bacteria composition in the ileal digesta. A total of 14 healthy neonatal Ganxi black goats with similar birth weight (BW: 2.35 ± 0.55 kg) were selected and allocated into two g

Effect of a phase I Coxiella burnetii inactivated vaccine on body temperature and milk yield in dairy cows.

Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii. The pathogen is prevalent in ruminants (goats, sheep, cows), which are the main sources of human infection. In the cattle industry around the world, animal (15 to 20%) and herd (38 to 72%) level prevalences of C. burnetii are high. Vaccination of ruminants against Q fever is considered important to prevent spreading of the disease and risk of infection in humans. However, published information on side effects of the Q fever vaccination under field conditions is limited for cows. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect

Sensitivity and specificity of the FAMACHA(©) system in Suffolk sheep and crossbred Boer goats.

Sheep and goats are the species of farm animal with the highest growth rate in Paraná State. The main problems facing Paraná State flocks are gastrointestinal parasites and anthelmintic resistance. One of the newest resources used to slow down the development of anthelmintic resistance is the FAMACHA(©) system, a selective method useful for controlling gastrointestinal verminosis in small ruminants. The purpose of the present research was to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the FAMACHA(©) system in sheep and goats and to compare the results for both species. The conjunctivae of 83 S

Health and productivity of traditionally managed Djallonke sheep and West African dwarf goats under high and moderate trypanosomosis risk.

Trypanosome infections, packed red cell volume levels (PCV), body weight and nematode faecal egg counts of village-based small ruminants were monitored in two areas in The Gambia with either moderate or high trypanosomosis risk for 24 and 30 months respectively. Outflows from the flock and new-born animals were recorded and data on housing and management were compiled. Reported mortality rates were higher in goats than in sheep, but for both species highest in the moderate risk area. The peak of trypanosome infections lagged the peak of tsetse densities by 1-3 months in both areas. Trypanosoma

Leptin and ghrelin expressions in the gastrointestinal tracts of calves and cows.

This study aims to investigate and compare the expressions of leptin and ghrelin in the gastrointestinal tracts of calves and cows. The mRNA expression of leptin in the rumen, abomasum, and jejunum of calves was significantly higher than that in cows. In both calves and cows, abomasum ghrelin mRNA expression was significantly higher than that in other gastrointestinal tracts. In calves, leptin protein expression in the abomasum was the highest. In addition, leptin protein expression in the abomasum and jejunum of calves was significantly higher than that in cows. Results indicated that leptin

The story of my dis-ability: Three poems.

A road accident had me bedridden for a whole month. During my recovery, I reached a new level of empathy for children with multiple disabilities and chronic illnesses. Traumatic events offer opportunities to reflect, ruminate, and transform selves. Undeniably, there is pain, discomfort, anxiety, irritability, and anger, but there is a deeper, inner growth happening too. Through the poems presented here, I illustrate how I experienced the ableistic world, my struggles, triumphs, and aches and pains. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved).

Baclofen and gastroesophageal reflux disease: seeing the forest through the trees.

Baclofen has been shown to decrease reflux events and increase lower esophageal sphincter pressure, yet has never established a clear role in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Lei and colleagues have shown in a recent elegant study that baclofen reduces the frequency and initiation of secondary peristalsis and heightens esophageal sensitivity to capsaicin-mediated stimulation. These findings may help explain both the benefit of baclofen in conditions such as rumination and supragastric belching, as well as the apparent lack of benefit of baclofen and other GABAB agonists

The Impact of Lameness on Welfare of the Dairy Cow.

The five freedoms offer a framework for discussion of lameness and its impact on the welfare of cows. Altered feeding behavior is a cause of reduced body condition, smaller digital cushion, and lameness. Providing a comfortable environment is critical to recovery and welfare. Pain associated with injury or disease of feet or legs is manifested by lameness. Pain management is an important part of therapy. In cases of severe lameness, euthanasia may be preferred. Lameness interferes with an animal's ability to exhibit natural behaviors by altering lying time, social interaction, ovarian activity

Whole-exome sequencing for detecting inborn errors of immunity: overview and perspectives.

The study of inborn errors of immunity is based on a comprehensive clinical description of the patient's phenotype and the elucidation of the underlying molecular mechanisms and their genetic etiology. Deciphering the pathogenesis is key to genetic counseling and the development of targeted therapy. This review shows the power of whole-exome sequencing in detecting inborn errors of immunity along five central steps taken in whole-exome sequencing analysis. In parallel, we highlight the challenges for the clinical and scientific use of the method and how these hurdles are currently being addres
