Treatment of pediculosis capitis: a critical appraisal of the current literature.

Pediculosis capitis is the most common ectoparasitic disease in children in industrialized countries and extremely common in resource-poor communities of the developing world. The extensive use of pediculicides with a neurotoxic mode of action has led to the development and spread of resistant head lice populations all over the world. This triggered the development of compounds with other modes of action. The current literature on treatment approaches of head lice infestation was searched, and published randomized controlled trials were critically analyzed. The following compounds/family of co

Vitiligo and alopecia areata: apples and oranges?

Vitiligo and alopecia areata are common autoimmune diseases of the skin. Vitiligo is caused by the destruction of melanocytes and results in the appearance of white patches on any part of the body, while alopecia areata is characterized by patchy hair loss primarily on the scalp, but may also involve other areas as well. At first glance, the two diseases appear to be quite different, targeting different cell types and managed using different treatment approaches. However, the immune cell populations and cytokines that drive each disease are similar, they are closely associated within patients …

Blastomycosis: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Blastomycosis is a chronic granulomatous and suppurative mycosis caused by the fungus Blastomyces dermatitidis. This is a dimorphic fungus, which exists as a non-pathogenic mold in mycelial form in nature and converts to pathogenic yeast at body temperature. Infection is acquired by either inhalation or inoculation. We report a case of blastomycosis with severe involvement of the scalp, face, and neck, with no evidence of systemic involvement. METHODS: Biopsy specimen was stained with hematoxylin and eosin, periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), PAS with diastase digestion, and Grocott. Cult…

Rhinosporidiosis affecting multiple parts of the body.

Rhinosporidiosis is a rare chronic granulomatous condition caused by a fungus (Rhinosporidium seeberi). It has been seen mainly in southern India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. This is the first published report of a patient with multiple rhinosporidiosis. He had lesions in the nares, in multiple areas of the skin, in the external urethral meatus, glans of penis and the perineum.

Why infest the loved ones--inherent human behaviour indicates former mutualism with head lice.

Head lice transmit to new hosts when people lean their heads together. Humans frequently touch their heads to express friendship or love, while this behaviour is absent in apes. We hypothesize that this behaviour was adaptive because it enabled people to acquire head lice infestations as early as possible to provoke an immune response effective against both head lice and body lice throughout the subsequent periods of their life. This cross-immunity could provide some defence against the body-louse-borne lethal diseases like epidemic typhus, trench fever, relapsing fever and the classical plagu

Treatment of chemotherapy-induced alopecia.

Chemotherapy-induced alopecia has been well documented as a cause of distress to patients undergoing cancer treatment. Despite the importance of hair loss to patients, however, patients often receive little more counseling than the advice to purchase a wig or other head covering for the duration of their treatment. Research into non-camouflage (wigs, turbans, and head scarves) treatment methods has been complicated both by a lack of a standardized methodology for evaluating hair loss and hair regrowth and by a lack of human trials. Nevertheless, scalp cooling as a method of preventing hair los…

Sonographic features of sinus pericranii in 4 pediatric patients.

Sinus pericranii is a rare venous anomaly, which shows abnormal communication between the intracranial and extracranial venous systems. Sono … ed sinus pericranii, and the other 2 were associated with Crouzon syndrome. By identifying a venous scalp mass with intracranial and extracranial venous communication and changes in its size, shape, and venous flow pattern, radiologists will be able to make a definitive diagnosis of sinus pericranii by using gray scale and Doppler sonography.

Malignant melanoma derived from cerebriform intradermal naevus.

We report a case of malignant melanoma (MM) derived from cerebriform intradermal naevus (CIN) in a 66-year-old Japanese man. The patient had cutis verticis gyrata (CVG) on the posterior area of the scalp at birth. He noticed a dome-shaped nodule at the centre of the CVG at 66 years of age. Histopathological examination found a nodule of MM arising within an extensive area of intradermal naevus. There was no metastasis to lymph nodes or other organs. To our knowledge, only two cases of CIN in which MM had later developed have been reported. We estimated that the incidence of melanoma from CIN i…

[Ectoparasites. Part 1: lice and fleas].

Ectoparasites and epidermal parasitic skin diseases are a heterogeneous group of infections of the external layer of the skin. The most common forms world-wide are scabies, lice (Pediculosis capitis, corporis, vestimentorum and pubis), tungiasis and the hookworm-associated Larva migrans cutanea. The head louse is the most widespread parasite in children in Germany. The symptoms, apart from pruritus, eczematous skin eruptions and ictus reactions of the skin, are often unspecific and many differential diagnoses must be considered. Treatment of ectoparasites includes manual procedures, such as re
