Depression, Nutrition, and Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy in Men Who Have Sex With Men in Manila, Philippines.

Introduction: Depression is the most frequently observed psychiatric disorder among HIV patients. The effect of depression on adherence among men who have sex with men (MSM) HIV patients has not been well studied in the Philippines. Depression is commonly undiagnosed and consequently untreated, which leads to a negative influence on antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. Other risk factors such as HIV-related stigma, self-body image satisfaction, and nutritional status are recognized as potential barriers to access HIV prevention and treatment services issues and poor adherence. Methods: Hosp

History of Childhood Maltreatment and College Academic Outcomes: Indirect Effects of Hot Execution Function.

College students who report a history of childhood maltreatment may be at risk for poor outcomes. In the current study, we conducted an exploratory analysis to examine potential models that statistically mediate associations between aspects of maltreatment and aspects of academic outcome, with a particular focus on executive functions (EF). Consistent with contemporary EF research, we distinguished between relatively "cool" EF tasks (i.e., performed in a context relatively free of emotional or motivational valence) and "hot" EF tasks that emphasize performance under more emotionally arousing c

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and disruptive behavior disorders: prevalence, associations, and explanation of the relationships.

This exploratory study investigates how secondary school students resist or align with a social robot that challenges their reasoning in a curriculum-based mathematics task. Twenty-two students collaborated with a Furhat robot on a geometry problem whose three parts were familiar from class. In the critical part, all students produced task-relevant evidence for the correct solution, while the robot proposed and defended an incorrect solution through argument-based persuasion, without deliberately invoking peripheral persuasive cues. We examined resistance to the robot's informational social in

Effects of L-cysteine on reinstatement of ethanol-seeking behavior and on reinstatement-elicited extracellular signal-regulated kinase phosphorylation in the rat nucleus accumbens shell.

BACKGROUND: Alcoholism is a neuroadaptive disorder, and the understanding of the mechanisms of the high rates of relapse, which characterize it, represents one of the most demanding challenges in alcoholism and addiction research. The extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) is an intracellular kinase, critical for neuroplasticity in the adult brain that is suggested to play a fundamental role in the molecular mechanisms underlying drug addiction and relapse. We previously observed that a nonessential amino acid, L-cysteine, significantly decreases oral ethanol (EtOH) self-administration, r

Past infection with hepatitis A virus among Vancouver street youth, injection drug users and men who have sex with men: implications for vaccination programs.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, inactivated hepatitis A vaccines are targeted selectively at those at increased risk for infection or its complications. In order to evaluate the need for routine hepatitis A vaccination programs in Vancouver for street youth, injection drug users (IDUs) and men who have sex with men (MSM), we determined the prevalence of antibodies against hepatitis A virus (HAV) and risk factors for HAV in these groups. METHODS: The frequency of past HAV infection was measured in a sample of Vancouver street youth, IDUs and MSM attending outreach and STD clinics and needle exchange fa

Physical therapy management of peripheral vestibular dysfunction: two clinical case reports.

We describe the treatment of two patients with peripheral vestibular dysfunction using a novel, staged exercise program. Response to treatment was documented. The first patient, a 62-year-old woman with unilateral vestibular dysfunction (UVD) and a 6-month history of disequilibrium following herpes zoster oticus resulting in damage to the right inner ear, was treated with an 8-week course of vestibular physical therapy. During the 8 weeks, the patient attended weekly physical therapy sessions and was trained to perform vestibular adaptation exercises on a daily basis at home. The second patien

Families Moving Forward Connect mHealth Intervention for Caregivers of Children With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) affect 1.1% to 5% of the general population. Yet, most children with FASD and their families cannot access evidence-based interventions. Mobile health (mHealth) interventions have the potential to increase access to care on a broad scale. While numerous self-directed parenting apps exist, none have been tested for FASD. The FMF (Families Moving Forward) Connect app is a self-directed intervention derived from an empirically supported intervention for caregivers raising children with FASD. FMF Connect is the first self-directed parenting app f

The effect of motivational interviewing on self-efficacy in managing health and quality of life in pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus is a multidimensional health problem that may negatively affect lifestyle behaviors and quality of life during pregnancy. Effective management of gestational diabetes mellitus requires self-efficacy in areas such as glycemic monitoring, healthy nutrition, physical activity, and weight control. Motivational interviewing is a patient-centered counseling approach that may support behavior change and health management. This study aimed to determine the effect of motivational interviewing on self-efficacy for health practices and quality of life in pregnant

Developing and Validating a Self-Care Self-Efficacy Scale for Oral Anticoagulation Therapy in Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Oral anticoagulation therapy (OAC) is the cornerstone treatment for preventing venous thromboembolism and stroke in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). Despite its significance, challenges in adherence and persistence to OAC regimens have been reported, leading to severe health complications. Central to addressing these challenges is the concept of self-efficacy (SE) in medication management. Currently, there is a noticeable gap in available tools specifically designed to measure SE in OAC self-care management, while such tools are crucial for enhancing patient ad

Assessing Vaccine Intentions, Knowledge, Self-Efficacy, and Trust: A Cross-Sectional Study on Perceptions of Monkeypox Vaccination and Public Health Risk Awareness in Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria.

Introduction The global emergence of monkeypox has heightened public health concerns, particularly in regions with limited vaccine uptake. In Nigeria, understanding the factors influencing vaccination intentions is essential for developing effective public health strategies. Despite vaccine availability, hesitancy and varying degrees of acceptance persist, driven by factors such as self-efficacy, vaccine trust, and overall attitudes toward vaccination. Previous research highlights the importance of these factors in shaping health behaviors, particularly in vulnerable populations. In Benue Stat

Mentalizing Subtypes in Eating Disorders: A Latent Profile Analysis.

Background: Mentalizing, the mental capacity to understand oneself and others in terms of mental states, has been found to be reduced in several mental disorders. Some studies have suggested that eating disorders (EDs) may also be associated with impairments in mentalizing. The aim of this work is to investigate the possible presence of mentalizing subtypes in a sample of patients with EDs. Method: A sample of patients with eating disorders (N = 157) completed a battery of measures assessing mentalization and related variables, including the Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (RFQ), the Diff

Improved self-efficacy in persons with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis after an intensive social cognitive wellness program with participation of support partners: a 6-months observational study.

BACKGROUND: For persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) it is important to preserve their autonomy, in spite of increasing disability. A major factor mediating autonomy is self-efficacy. According to the social cognitive theory stressors are crucial determinants of self-efficacy, as well as the interaction with partners. METHODS: In an explorative observational study we assessed in 47 persons with MS (PwMS) the effect of an intense, multidisciplinary, 3-day, social cognitive wellness program with the participation of support partners, after 1, 3 and 6 months. PRIMARY OUTCOMES: self-efficacy-con
