Genomic sister-disorders of neurodevelopment: an evolutionary approach.

Genomic sister-disorders are defined here as diseases mediated by duplications versus deletions of the same region. Such disorders can provide unique information concerning the genomic underpinnings of human neurodevelopment because effects of diametric variation in gene copy number on cognitive and behavioral phenotypes can be inferred. We describe evidence from the literature on deletions versus duplications for the regions underlying the best-known human neurogenetic sister-disorders, including Williams syndrome, Velocardiofacial syndrome, and Smith-Magenis syndrome, as well as the X-chromo

An evidence-based approach to lifestyle interventions in urogynaecology.

Urinary incontinence, urgency, overactive bladder symptoms, cystitis and urinary tract infections are common conditions that collectively trouble over one-third of the female population around and beyond the time of menopause, with a detrimental effect on physical, social and mental wellbeing. Apart from pharmacological and surgical treatments, a long list of lifestyle, behavioural, physical and complementary interventions have been introduced over the years to relieve lower urinary tract symptoms. This review examines the effect on these symptoms of lifestyle factors (such as weight, smoking,

The response to the trench diseases in World War I: a triumph of public health science.

The recent 90-year anniversary of the Battle of the Somme presents an opportunity to examine the public health response to the trench diseases, new conditions which arose in the trenches of World War I. Throughout history, there have been two views of epidemic disease: the configurationist and contagionist perspectives. Most doctors responding to the trench diseases, 'contingent-contagionists', combined these two conceptions of disease. Because of the difficulty of finding a causative organism and the absence of effective treatment, the majority view became that these conditions were a product

Effects of the crude venom of the social wasp Agelaia vicina on gamma-aminobutyric acid and glutamate uptake in synaptosomes from rat cerebral cortex.

Glutamate (L-glu) is the most important excitatory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system. Its action is terminated by transporters located in the plasma membrane of neurons and glial cells, which have a critical role in preventing glutamate excitotoxicity under normal conditions. The neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system. Venoms of solitary wasps and orb-spiders are composed of large proteins, medium-size peptides, polyamine amides (PAs), and other neuroactive components that are highl

Bimodal reading: benefits of a talking computer for average and less skilled readers.

Studies have shown that when information is presented through visual and auditory channels simultaneously (i.e., bimodal presentation), speed of processing and memory recall are enhanced. The present study demonstrated the efficacy of a bimodal approach to fostering reading comprehension. Eighteen average readers (9 girls and 9 boys) and 18 less skilled readers (8 girls and 10 boys) in Grades 8 and 9 participated in the study. Students were presented with social studies and science passages via a computer. Passages were presented in three conditions: visually (on screen), auditorily (read by d

Risk factors for benign breast disease.

The importance of various risk factors for benign breast disorders has been assessed an analysis of data obtained from a multicenter cohort study of contraceptive use among women in the United Kingdom (the Oxford Family Planning Association Contraceptive Study). Cases comprised all women diagnosed as having any type of benign breast lesion; 74 had fibroadenoma, 211 had histologically confirmed chronic cystic disease, 331 had breast lumps not subjected to biopsy and 70 had other disease. Each case was individually matched with another study participant who was free from recognized breast diseas

The natural history of violence.

In the past, human violence was associated with food shortage, but recently it has increased even in relatively well-fed societies. The reason appears from studies of monkeys under relaxed, spacious conditions and under crowding stress. Uncrowded monkeys have unaggressive leaders, rarely quarrel, and protect females and young. Crowded monkeys (even well-fed) have brutal bosses, often quarrel, and wound and kill each other, including females and young. Crowding has similar behaviour effects on other mammals, with physiological disturbances including greater susceptibility to infections. All thi

How "community" matters for how people interact with information: mixed methods study of young men who have sex with other men.

BACKGROUND: We lack a systematic portrait of the relationship between community involvement and how people interact with information. Young men who have sex with men (YMSM) are a population for which these relationships are especially salient: their gay community involvement varies and their information technology use is high. YMSM under age 24 are also one of the US populations with the highest risk of HIV/AIDS. OBJECTIVE: To develop, test, and refine a model of gay community involvement (GCI) factors in human-information interaction (HII) as applied to HIV/AIDS information among YMSM, speci

Exploring Ways to Reduce Heavy Drinking by Increasing Hope Among Midlife Women in Australia: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption remains a major societal problem, contributing to myriad health conditions. Australian midlife women (aged 45-64 years) consume more alcohol than previous generations of midlife women and more than younger women now. Alcohol poses health risks that are unique to midlife women, including increased risk of breast cancer; 10% of breast cancers result from alcohol consumption and there is no "safe" limit. There is a global gap in knowledge about socially and culturally appropriate interventions for reducing alcohol consumption in these heavy-drinking groups of midli

Exploring Public, Practitioner and Policymaker Perspectives of Unhealthy Lifestyle Factors in the Context of Socioeconomic Deprivation: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Unhealthy lifestyle factors, such as smoking, high alcohol intake, poor diet and physical inactivity, are key risk factors for premature mortality. How unhealthy lifestyle factors are viewed in the wider context of socioeconomic deprivation is rarely considered. Understanding key stakeholder views on lifestyle factors in the context of deprivation is critical to intervention development and reducing harm in more deprived populations. The aim of this study was to explore public, healthcare professional and policymaker views around unhealthy lifestyle factors in the context of depr

Rare diseases, body, and stigma: a comparative analysis of people living with berardinelli syndrome and Machado-Joseph disease in Brazil.

OBJECTIVES: This article analyses how people living with rare diseases are stigmatised due to physical features and bodily alterations, considering the moral dimensions through which these differences are read. The analysis draws on research conducted in two regions of Brazil (Northeast and Southeast) with people affected by two hereditary rare conditions: Berardinelli Syndrome (BS) and Machado-Joseph Disease (MJD). We selected these conditions because of their significant bodily transformations: BS is present from birth, whereas MJD emerges in adulthood. This enabled us to examine how stigma

The role of media in reducing and reinforcing stigma: A randomized controlled trial investigating the impact of positive and negative representations of visible difference.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with visible differences often experience appearance-related stigma and discrimination, reinforced by negative media portrayals. In contrast, positive portrayals may challenge stereotypes and promote acceptance. This study examined whether exposure to positive, negative or neutral images of visible difference influences appearance-related stigma, body appreciation and broad conceptualizations of beauty. It was hypothesized that positive images would decrease stigma and increase body appreciation and broad conceptualizations of beauty, whereas negative images would incre

Challenging situations experienced by mothers in seasonal agricultural migration and their coping strategies: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Mothers participating in seasonal agricultural migration constitute one of the most vulnerable groups in society, as they must cope with the challenges of working long hours in the fields while simultaneously bearing the responsibility of meeting all their families’ needs at home. METHODS: This study, designed using a descriptive phenomenological approach, aims to understand the challenges that seasonal agricultural worker mothers living in southeastern Türkiye face during migration and their coping strategies. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews in August–Septe
