The current consensus on ulcerative colitis, and the evidence and perspectives on the influence of gut microbiota on it.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic non-specific inflammatory disease, the pathogenesis is not clear, there is no clinical cure. The number of cases of UC has increased worldwide in recent years due to industrialization and social pressures. At present, the therapeutic effectiveness of UC remains controversial. Although researchers have conducted certain studies on the pathogenesis of UC, its pathogenesis and anti-UC pathogenesis have not been fully revealed. Previous studies have found a close relationship between human gut microbes and UC, and may be the most important measure of UC for cli

Dyadic division of labor: Effects of individual effectivities, task difficulty, and communicative abilities.

The present experiments aim to identify the contexts and constraints that give rise to effective social coordination in a novel division-of-labor task, a gamified model of honey bee nectar processing. Experiment 1 investigated the interaction of task demand and individual effectivities on task efficiency and deterministic movement behavior in dyads. Experiment 2 replicated and extended Experiment 1 by adding a condition related to communicative abilities. Results showed that increasing task demand often resulted in increased coordination and synchronization, regardless of task-switching abilit

Effect of Cyberbullying Victimization Experience on Aggressive Intervention: A Moderated Mediation Model of Depression and Gender.

The current study developed a moderated mediation model to investigate the relationship between cyberbullying victimization experience and aggressive intervention and its potential mechanism. A total of 1,129 undergraduate students from five universities in China (mean age = 19.57, SD = 1.37; 513 females) completed a series of questionnaires, including the Cyberbullying Victimization Questionnaire, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, subscale of aggressive intervention, and Chinese short version of the Marlow-Crowne Social Desirability Questionnaire. The results showed that cybe

From 'AVOID Frailty' to 'The THRIVE Strategy for Lifelong Wellness': Proposing a Positively Framed Health Promotion Framework for Aging Well.

The AVOID Frailty framework, developed by the Canadian Frailty Network, promotes five evidence-based behaviors to reduce frailty risk in older adults: physical activity, vaccination, medication optimization, social interaction, and nutrition. Although widely adopted, its deficit-based framing may limit engagement and appeal. This commentary proposes a positively framed alternative, the THRIVE Strategy for Lifelong Wellness, which retains the core behavioral focus of AVOID while adding a sixth pillar, engaging the mind, to reflect evidence on cognitive and emotional well-being in aging. We furt…

Understanding Banter: A Systematic Review of Literature to Conceptualize the Behaviors That Characterize Banter.

Banter represents an interaction practice that is typical of many close social relationships with behaviors often ambiguous in nature and maybe aggressive. This review summarizes and synthesizes the literature on offline and online banter published between 2000 and 2022 to examine: (a) the behavioral and situational factors that characterize banter, (b) the distinction between banter and aggressive behaviors, (c) how intent influences how banter behaviors are interpreted, and (d) gender and age differences in the conceptualization of banter. The literature search took place in January 2023 and

[Structure and Function of Thalamocortical Circuits Underlying Alloparental Behaviors].

The thalamus is widely recognized as a major source of input to the cerebral cortex and extensive knowledge of its anatomical connectivity has been accumulated through classical tracer studies. However, the quantitative characteristics of the thalamocortical connections and their physiological functions remain poorly understood. This issue is particularly important for higher-order cortical areas, such as the prefrontal cortex, which lack the prominent layer-4 bottom-up input characteristics of sensory cortices, raising the unresolved question of what types of inputs underlie higher cognitive

Dance Interventions Improve Quality of Life and Related Psychological Factors Among Breast Cancer Survivors: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

This systematic review and meta-analysis examined evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the effects of dance interventions on … PA programs ≥ 9 weeks. Dance interventions integrating physical activity, emotional expression, and social interaction may enhance QoL and psychological well-being in women with breast cancer, although evidence for improvements in physical symptoms remains limited. Further research should standardize intervention protocols and assess long-term outcomes.

Atopic Dermatitis Across the Lifespan: Understanding, Measuring and Minimizing Cumulative Life Course Impairment.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) presents a multidimensional burden, often beginning in infancy and accumulating over time. Beyond itch and pain, AD is associated with significant losses of health-related quality of life resulting from sleep disturbance, stigmatization, other atopic diseases and nonatopic comorbidities, among others. These associated conditions affect patients' physical and mental health, development, social interaction and productivity, resulting in what has been termed cumulative life course impairment (CLCI). To alter the trajectory of AD and improve patient outcomes, it is important…

Brexpiprazole Treatment in a Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Trauma-Associated Hoarding Symptoms: A Case Report.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently present with multiple psychiatric comorbidities, often accompanied by severe emotional dysregulation and behavioral disturbances that complicate diagnosis and treatment. We describe a child with comorbid ASD and ADHD who also met diagnostic criteria for hoarding disorder and separation anxiety disorder and exhibited trauma-related symptoms. The patient showed minimal response to psychotherapy and conventional pharmacological interventions. Although comprehensive multidisciplinary support

Understanding risk and protective factors for pain and healthy aging: an intersectional and resilience-based perspective.

Chronic pain (CP) is a major public health concern in the United States, with healthcare costs exceeding $700 billion. Beyond its' economic burden, CP imposes significant physical, emotional, and functional strain, particularly among populations that are disproportionately affected by pain (i.e., older adults, people with HIV, racial and gender minorities). Despite growing trends in pain research, there remains no consensus on optimal pain management or the mechanisms underlying pain exacerbation. Therefore, this review highlights key risk (e.g., sociodemographic determinants of health, clinic

Integrating contextual determinants and polygenic risk to examine dementia and late-life cognition in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias are influenced by genetic and environmental risk factors. We investigated the relationship between contextual exposures and cognitive outcomes, independent of and in interaction with polygenic risk. METHODS: Using the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (N = 5687), we assessed the associations of contextual determinants representing the social, chemical, and built environment with incident dementia and late-life cognition using proportional hazards regression and generalized estimating equation models, then evaluated their joint effect

Sleep matters: Supporting healthy sleep for children and youth with neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDDs).

Children with neurodevelopmental disabilities are at high risk for sleep problems, which can negatively affect their health and that of their families. Improving sleep may be one of the most effective ways to improve behaviour, mood, positive social interaction, attention and learning, and reduce future risks for poor metabolic and mental health. While insomnia is the most common concern, increased rates of other sleep disorders are also found in this population. Sleep problems require prompt identification and intervention, which includes recognizing or ruling out contributory medical conditi…

Applying the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution Model to Addictive Behaviors in East Asian Countries: Feasibility and Considerations.

OBJECTIVES: This study explored how the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution (I-PACE) model can explain and address addictive behaviors in East Asian contexts. METHODS: Over the past decades, articles published in peer-reviewed journals were identified and reviewed by searching academic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. These articles were related to the I-PACE model and considered data from other Asian jurisdictions. RESULTS: Asian cultural factors within the I-PACE model may include 1) personal factors (academic stress, family expectations

The influence of psychological distance and topic type on inter-brain synchronization of emotion perception during face-to-face communication: an fNIRS hyperscanning study.

Emotional perception plays a crucial role in social interaction; however, previous studies have majorly focused on static emotion perception rather than examining how emotions unfold during communication. Therefore, this study investigated how psychological distance (friends vs. stranger pairs) and topic type (shared vs. exclusive experiences) modulate inter-brain synchronization (IBS) during emotional communication, using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The results showed that: (1) shared story (vs. exclusive story) elicited higher levels of emotion perception, both for self an…

Pre- and Postnatal Valproate Exposure Affects Brain Development.

This review investigates the teratogenic impact of valproic acid (VPA) on brain development, focusing on dose-dependent and timing-related behavioural and neurological outcomes in rats and mice, with an emphasis on using it as a model for autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Single and multiple administration methods (e.g., oral gavage and intraperitoneal injections) across various rat and mouse strains consistently report behavioural alterations (i.e., altered social interaction and locomotor activity) and neuronal changes, particularly in the hippocampus and cerebellum. We underscore the importa…

Prelimbic cortex to ventral tegmental area projection regulates early social isolation stress-potentiated heroin seeking in mice.

Early-life adversities increase vulnerability to substance use disorders, which are characterized by persistent, uncontrollable drive to seek drugs, often leading to relapse. Previously, we reported that early social isolation (ESI) during adolescence potentiates heroin-seeking in mice. However, the underlying neurobiology remains unknown. Here, we found that ESI aggravated heroin-induced neuronal dysfunction in prelimbic cortex (PrL) to ventral tegmental area (VTA) projecting neurons. Activating PrL->VTA projection attenuated ESI-potentiated heroin seeking, alongside normalized neuronal funct

Minority Stress, Discrimination, and Health Outcomes Among LGBTQ+ Older Adult Dementia Caregivers.

Using LGBTQ+ Social Networks, Aging, and Policy Study Wave 3 data (N = 982), this study examines how caregiving for individuals with mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, and related dementias (MCI/ADRD) impacts everyday stressors, discrimination, and health outcomes among LGBTQ+ older adults in the Southern United States. Using chi-square tests, Fisher's exact tests, and logistic regression models, we assessed associations of caregiver role with stress and health outcomes. We then conducted moderation analyses to test interactions between caregiver role and LGBTQ+ minority stress. L
