Leber congenital amaurosis has been associated with keratoconus and it has been postulated that this is due to eye rubbing, the oculo-digital sign, because of poor vision. Six schools for the blind were visited, and 174 children with a visual acuity of less than 3/60 examined. Thirty-five children had Leber amaurosis, and 10 of these had keratoconus (29%) and one had keratoglobus (3%). A retrospective, cross-sectional survey was conducted of all pediatric trauma cases seen by the ophthalmology department at our institution from January 1986 to December 1991. Children older than 3 years of age rarely tolerate contact lenses for unilateral surgical aphakia. This problem is even more pronounced following repair of corneal lacerations or perforations that are associated with traumatic cataracts. We measured the intraocular pressure (IOP) of 50 normal, cooperative, awake children below 5 years of age and 12 normal, volunteer adults with the Perkins hand-held applanation tonometer (Perkins) and the Digilab pneumatonographer-tonometer (Pneuma). The assessment of extraocular muscle function is usually performed indirectly by an examination of ocular motility. We have utilized magnetic resonance imaging, in both cine and static modes, to directly observe the contractility behavior of the extraocular muscles. This noninvasive technique was applied to the study of patients with horizontal rectus muscle palsies. In all cases, the palsied muscle was of a smaller diameter than its normal counterpart. Two hundred thirty-eight consecutive patients with pediatric cataracts were fitted with a variety of aphakic contact lenses after cataract extraction. Thirty-nine patients did not return for follow up. Of the remaining 199 patients, 40 discontinued contact lens wear. Eyelid retraction in an adult occurs usually secondary to Graves' ophthalmopathy, but in children the diagnosis is often obscure. To our knowledge, there are no reports reviewing the relative frequency of the various etiologies of eyelid retraction in children. We reviewed the records of our Pediatric Service from 1976 to 1991 and identified 16 children with eyelid retraction.
