[Mental disorders related to persistent negative working conditions].

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders are common in our industrialised society and inevitably affect the working population. Over the last few years greater attention has been focussed on work-related psychopathologies due to an increasing number of studies regarding workplace bullying. OBJECTIVES: This study reports our observations on patients with mental disorders who came to our Occupational Health Centre because they perceived themselves to be victims of negative working conditions. An indepth analysis of their working conditions led us to the conclusion that many of these disorders were to be at

EMpower Parents: Effectiveness of EMDR treatment for parental PTSD related to a child's medical condition in a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic or acute medical conditions greatly impact the diagnosed child and their parents. Parents have to deal with an accumulation of stressful and potential traumatic events, which can lead to post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A first-choice evidence-based treatment for PTSD is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), usually delivered in multiple sessions over weeks or months. Currently, parents do not receive this treatment due to barriers, such as time constraints, limited focus on own wellbeing, and lack of reimbursed

Deciphering the links between psychological stress, depression, and neurocognitive decline in patients with Down syndrome.

The relationships between psychological stress and cognitive functions are still to be defined despite some recent progress. Clinically, we noticed that patients with Down syndrome (DS) may develop rapid neurocognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease (AD) earlier than expected, often shortly after a traumatic life event (bereavement over the leave of a primary caregiver, an assault, modification of lifestyle, or the loss of parents). Of course, individuals with DS are naturally prone to develop AD, given the triplication of chromosome 21. However, the relatively weak intensity of the stressful

Comparative analysis of default mode networks in major psychiatric disorders using resting-state EEG.

Default mode network (DMN) is a set of functional brain structures coherently activated when individuals are in resting-state. In this study, we constructed multi-frequency band resting-state EEG-based DMN functional network models for major psychiatric disorders to easily compare their pathophysiological characteristics. Phase-locking values (PLVs) were evaluated to quantify functional connectivity; global and nodal clustering coefficients (CCs) were evaluated to quantify global and local connectivity patterns of DMN nodes, respectively. DMNs of patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (P

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Psychiatric Comorbidity among Adolescent Earthquake Survivors: a Longitudinal Cohort Study.

Although posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is highly comorbid with psychiatric disorders, little longitudinal research has been conducted to determine the potentially causal links. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and comorbidity patterns of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and psychiatric symptoms among adolescents exposed to the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in China and to examine the bidirectional prospective associations between PTSD symptoms and other psychiatric symptoms. A sample of 1573 adolescent survivors (45.8% male; mean age at initial survey was 15.0 years, SD =

Psychotherapies for comorbid anxiety in bipolar spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Comorbid anxiety disorders are highly prevalent in bipolar disorder and have been shown to have serious negative impacts on the course of illness. The pharmacological treatment of anxiety can interact with the bipolar disorder and has not been proven effective. As such, many have recommended the psychological treatment of anxiety. This paper reviews the literature on psychological treatments for anxiety comorbid to bipolar disorder. METHOD: The Medline, PsychInfo and Web of Science databases were thoroughly examined for relevant treatment studies. RESULTS: Despite frequent recomm

Progress in psychosocial assessment and treatment.

In this second review on research examining psychosocial cognitive-behavioral, and basic behavioral research, we focus on recent findings pertaining to: (a) relevant psychological constructs in anxiety, and (b) the treatment of anxiety. We first present several studies in which researchers investigated psychological models or constructs with the aim of enhancing the current understanding of the development and persistence of anxiety. Most of these studies also have implications for the treatment of anxiety disorders. We go on to review studies exploring novel approaches to the treatment of per

Reversible and irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitors in other psychiatric disorders.

In addition to being effective in depressive disorders, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) have been shown to be effective in controlled studies of patient with panic disorder with agoraphobia, social phobia, atypical depression or mixed anxiety and depression, bulimia, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder. Uncontrolled case reports have noted MAOI efficacy in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), trichotillomania, dysmorphophobia and avoidant personality disorder. Reversible inhibitors of MAO-A (RIMAs) appear safer than the classical irreversible MAOIs sin

Railway suicide: the psychological effects on drivers.

People have jumped (or fallen) in front of trains on the London Underground system in increasing numbers throughout the twentieth century. During the past decade there have been about 100 such incidents each year, of which around 90 would involve the train driver witnessing his train strike the person on the track. Most are suicides or attempts at suicide. They represent major unexpected and violent events in the lives of the train drivers and it might be expected that some of them would respond by developing a post-traumatic stress reaction of the type identified by Horowitz (1976) or other a

Assessment of symptoms in adult survivors of incest: a factor analytic study of the Responses to Childhood Incest Questionnaire.

Although research has established the long-term damaging effects of incest, these efforts have suffered from the lack of valid, standardized assessment instruments. The present study reports on the construction and factor validation of the Response to Childhood Incest Questionnaire (RCIQ), a self-report instrument that assesses a range of commonly reported symptoms experienced by adult survivors of incest. A clinical population of 104 adult women who had experienced childhood or adolescent incest completed the RCIQ. A factor analysis of the RCIQ items revealed seven factors which corresponded

REM sleep and neurodegeneration.

Several brainstem, subcortical and cortical areas are involved in the generation of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The alteration of these structures as a result of a neurodegenerative process may therefore lead to REM sleep anomalies. REM sleep behaviour disorder is associated with nightmares, dream-enacting behaviours and increased electromyographic activity in REM sleep. Its isolated form is a harbinger of synucleinopathies such as Parkinson's disease or dementia with Lewy bodies, and neuroprotective interventions are advocated. This link might also be present in patients taking antidepres

Risk and resilience in trajectories of post-traumatic stress symptoms among first responders after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake: 7-year prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: First responders to disasters are at risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The trajectories of post-traumatic stress symptom severity differ among individuals, even if they are exposed to similar events. These trajectories have not yet been reported in non-Western first responders. AIMS: We aimed to explore post-traumatic stress symptom severity trajectories and their risk factors in first responders to the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE) - a historically large earthquake that resulted in a tsunami and a nuclear disaster. METHOD: A total of 55 632 Japa

Metabolic syndrome is associated with reduced default mode network functional connectivity in young post-9/11 Veterans.

Metabolic syndrome is a collection of health factors that increases risk for cardiovascular disease. A condition of aging, metabolic syndrome is associated with reduced brain network integrity, including functional connectivity alterations among the default mode, regions vulnerable to neurodegeneration. Prevalence of metabolic syndrome is elevated in younger populations including post-9/11 Veterans and individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder, but it is unclear whether metabolic syndrome affects brain function in earlier adulthood. Identifying early effects of metabolic syndrome on brain
