OBJECTIVE: To study the diagnosis and treatment of persistent hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia of infancy.
METHODS: The clinical data of 12 infants with persistent hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: Convulsion, cyanosis, lethargy, refusing milk sucking, irritability and sweating were common symptoms. The laboratory findings displayed persistent hypoglycemia and hyperinsulinism in all of the 12 infants. The glucagon test showed positive and no urine ketones were detected in all of the 12 infants. Seven infants were treated with oral diazoxide (5-15 mg/kg daily)

We report three patients with a history of neuroleptic malignant syndrome for whom modified electroconvulsive therapy (m-ECT) was scheduled. Two patients suffered from schizophrenia, and one suffered from depression. Their symptoms, such as hyperthermia, consciousness disturbance, myotonus, tremor, sweating, and tachycardia, improved gradually with administration of dantrolene and fluid infusion. However, their psychotic state was exacerbated. Therefore, m-ECT was scheduled. When patients were restless at the hospital ward, they were sedated with propofol and transferred to the operating room.

We determined factors associated with occupational transmission in Wisconsin during the 2003 outbreak of prairie dog--associated monkeypox virus infections. Axillary osmidrosis is a troublesome and distressing problem. Medical treatment is only temporally effective. From March 2003 to November 2004, 36 patients with axillary osmidrosis (nine cases combined with axillary hyperhidrosis) have been treated by excision of the subcutaneous glands via a small transverse incision, of which 31 cases could be followed up for a minimum of 3 months (average 7.3 months). We describe a case of a 38-year-old woman who presented with 'circling' seizures and was found to have an intracranial mass with features consistent with a meningioma. Three weeks prior to her presentation she underwent an uncomplicated vaginal hysterectomy. However, after discharge to home she developed a 4-day history of fever, chills and night sweats that eventually resolved. This is a descriptive study of epidemiological and clinical aspects of stings caused by the scorpion Tityus trivittatus in Argentina. We analyzed 511 cases recorded from different health centers in 22 provinces. Most accidents took place during the period November-April (76%), in or nearby houses (86%).
