BACKGROUND: With ever increasing numbers of closely related virus genomes being sequenced, it has become desirable to be able to compare two genomes at a level more detailed than gene content because two strains of an organism may share the same set of predicted genes but still differ in their pathogenicity profiles. PURPOSE: The recent basic science literature is replete with new discoveries in the molecular genetics of renal development. However, little of this information has filtered into urological textbooks and journals. An effort is made herein to integrate these new findings and propose a more sophisticated blueprint of renal development than the one traditionally taught in medical school and residency. To accomplish this goal the author offers simple definitions and interpretations of complicated terms and events, and points out how maldevelopment results when mutations take place.

Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) has been measured using an improved ammonium-precipitation method. SHBG has been measured in normal male and female subjects, and in hirsute subjects on and off combined oral contraceptives (OCs). SHBG concentrations in hirsute subjects were significantly lower than those of normal female subjects (P0.001). During treatment with OCs, SHBG concentrations rose significantly (P0.001). Considering little is known about the effects of progesterone (P4) on prostate biology, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of P4 on the ventral prostate of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). 30-week-old male SHR were subjected to hormone or vehicle administration.
