The identification of a morphologically unique lymphocyte in the peripheral blood of patients with infectious mononucleosis (IM) led to additional studies. Examination of Wright-stained smears of EDTA anticoagulated blood obtained from 25 patients with IM at presentation revealed significantly increased (p less than 0.0001) percentages of hand-mirror lymphocytes (HML) (mean 9.2%) compared with normal controls (mean 2.7%) or controls with nonspecific viral syndromes (mean 2.2%). Follow-up blood samples obtained on 10 of these patients demonstrated a marked increase in the HML count (mean 12.1%)

It is known that the impairment of cell-mediated immunity (CM) exists in lepromatous leprosy patients. This was shown by 1) delayed skin reaction to various test antigens, 2) decreased transformation of lymphocytes by various antigens, 3) delayed rejection of skin allograft, 4) decreased migration inhibitory fa-tor (MIF) formation, and 5) histologic study of the lymph node. In addition to these previous works, we have studied T and B lymphocytes in peripheral blood of leprosy patients; T cells by the technic of rosette formation, and B cells by staining surface immunoglobulins. The result of o

Intra Venous Immunoglobulin (IVIG) is a plasma-derived product used to treat many autoimmune diseases, including thrombocytopenia, immunodeficiency, and infectious diseases. In this study, the effect of IVIG injection was evaluated on the number of white blood cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and platelets. The effect of IVIG was also considered on the percentage of CD4 and CD8 positive cells T cell lymphocytes and their absolute number in pediatric patients with immune thrombocytopenic purpura. The study was a cross-sectional study performed on 32 patients with ITP. In these patients, a blood

BACKGROUNDS: The organization of minor salivary glands (MSG) infiltrates, in patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS), associates with disease severity and progression. Aberrant regulation of lymphocyte autophagy is involved in autoimmunity, and in previous work, we provided the first evidence of upregulated autophagy in CD4+ T cells infiltrating SS MSG. The aim of this study was to further explore autophagy in SS infiltrating and circulating lymphocytes and to investigate its role in disease histopathological progression.
METHODS: After collection of 20 SS MSG, the presence of lymphocyte aggreg

T cells show a bias in their migration pathways: some migrate preferentially to peripheral lymph nodes, some to mucosal tissues and some to peripheral tissues such as skin. The aim here was to determine the types of T cells that migrate preferentially into inflamed gingival tissue and compare this migration to that found in inflamed subcutaneous and mucosal tissues. The experiments were designed so that the simultaneous 3 h localization of two, differentially radiolabelled, lymphocyte populations (subcutaneously and mucosally derived) into sites of purified protein derivative/bacillus Calmette

We prospectively investigated whether the characteristics of lymphocyte subsets at diagnosis in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients are different from healthy controls and affect treatment outcomes. A total of 91 AML patients classified into 3 genetic risk subgroups (favorable/intermediate/poor) according to 2022 NCCN guidelines were enrolled. We measured lymphocyte subsets by flow cytometry with peripheral blood samples at diagnosis and compared results with healthy controls. Influences of lymphocyte subsets on complete remission (CR) rates and survivals were also evaluated. AML patients ha

BACKGROUND: Flow cytometry (FCM) is commonly used to identify many cell populations. We developed a white blood cell (WBC) differential counting system for detecting abnormal cells using FCM incorporating 10 colors and 11 antibodies in a single tube, called "10-color LeukoDiff," and evaluated its performance.
METHODS: Ninety-one EDTA-anti-coagulated peripheral blood samples from 76 patients were analyzed using 10-color LeukoDiff. We compared 10 color LeukoDiff results with the results of manual differential count (manual diff). WBCs were classified into 17 cell populations: neutrophils, total

Lymphocytes play a central role in the pathology of a range of chronic conditions such as autoimmune disease, transplant rejection, leukemia, lymphoma HIV/AIDs and cardiometabolic diseases such as atherosclerosis. Current treatments for lymphocyte-associated conditions are incompletely effective and/or complicated by a range of off-target toxicities. One major challenge is poor drug access to lymphocytes via the systemic blood and this may be attributed, at least in part, to the fact that lymphocytes are concentrated within lymph fluid and lymphoid tissues, particularly in gut-associated lymph

OBJECTIVE: The transient increase of the cytoplasmic free calcium level plays a key role in the process of lymphocyte activation. Kv1.3 and IKCa1 potassium channels are important regulators of the maintenance of calcium influx and present a possible target for selective immunomodulation.
DESIGN: Case-control study.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We took peripheral blood samples from 8 healthy individuals and 15 primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) patients. We evaluated calcium influx kinetics following activation in peripheral T lymphocytes. We also assessed the sensitivity of T lymphocytes to specific

Natural T (NT) lymphocytes recognize infected cells or microbial compounds without the classical genetic restriction of polymorphic major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules. This innate recognition pathway results in a broad and rapid antimicrobial response that may be critical for controlling the spread of intracellular pathogens, requiring the elimination of the infecting agent from both extracellular spaces and host cells. NT cells are mainly composed of alphabeta and gammadelta T lymphocytes that express natural killer (NK) receptors and recognize preferentially various nonpeptidic

A 58-year-old man experienced episodes of fever, vomiting, and diarrhea over a 2-year period. The laboratory evaluation during these attacks consistently disclosed thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and elevated liver enzymes. A liver biopsy performed at one of these attacks showed a typical picture of granulomatous hepatitis. In retrospect, all episodes seemed to be associated with the ingestion of quinine. Indeed, such a correlation was established by a challenge with quinine. By using flow cytometry, quinine-dependent IgG antibodies to platelets were detected in the patient serum. By a two-color

We herein tested the ability of lymphocytes to utilize the beta 1 integrin VLA-4 to mediate cell migration when adhering to its cytokine-inducible endothelial cell ligand VCAM-1 or its extracellular matrix ligand fibronectin. We used an in vitro system consisting of purified VCAM-1/Fc fusion protein or fibronectin immobilized on porous polycarbonate membranes to quantitatively measure the migration efficiency of an Epstein-Barr virus-transformed B cell line (SLA) and T lymphoblasts derived from normal donors. We found that both SLA cells and T lymphoblasts migrated across membranes coated with

In normal blood, there appears to be two similar but different subsets of T-lymphocytes present: (1) the cerebriform or convoluted Sézary-syndrome Lutzner cell, which may give rise to cutaneous T-cell lymphoma; (2) the polypetaloid or lobated acute T-cell lymphoma/leukemia (ATLL) cell, which may give rise to ATLL. Both cell types can be differentiated by their characteristic nuclear shapes.

Interactions of peritoneal exudate T lymphocytes from listeria-immune mice with macrophages from normal mice in the presence of heat-killed listeriae result in the induction of interleukins. The data show that Ly 1+, 23- T cells specific for listeria antigens are essential for interleukin induction and make it likely that, in addition, Ly 1+, 23+ T cells are required for optimal responses.

The immunosuppression following initial septic insult impairs resistance to secondary infection. Modulation of lymphocytes population may help to develop an effective therapeutic strategy. In this study, lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced endotoxemia was employed as the initial septic insult. 24 hours later, mice underwent cecal ligation and puncture to induce chronic or sub-acute peritonitis. Potential usefulness of T regs deletion antibody (anti-CD25) in improving LPS-induced immunosuppression and the survival of subsequent different infections were evaluated. LPS injection induced lymphocyte

BACKGROUND: Immunotherapy has been explored as a new therapy for B cell lymphoma, which is a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Because CD20 is a B lymphocyte-specific marker, anti-CD20 single chain-tagged T lymphocytes have already begun to be experimentally used in B cell lymphoma treatment, but its use is still limited because of its unspecific targeting. T cells transfected with CD28 and CD137 can significantly improve the ability of cytokines secretion and anti-tumor effect, as well as extending T cell survival time and improving their proliferation ability.

The pattern of inflammatory infiltration was studied in the frontal brain biopsies of 28 cases with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) by immunohistochemistry. Lymphocytic infiltration and gliosis were common pathologic findings. CD4+ T lymphocytes were often observed in perivascular areas and CD8+ lymphocytes in the parenchyma. B lymphocytes were located in large perivascular cuffs associated with longer and slower disease. Major histocompatibility complex antigens, interferon-gamma, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) were expressed in endothelial and glial cells. The inflamm
