OBJECTIVE: To explore the biological reaction of swine acellular dermal matrix as a filling material for body surface deformity.
METHODS: Xenogenic acellular dermal matrix was implanted into the hypoderm of rabbits. The implants were measured and observed with pathological and transmission electron microscopic technique at regular times. The results were compared with implantation of autologous dermis and swine dermis.

A pulmonary valve autograft may be proposed to replace diseased aortic valves. The explanted pulmonary valve is replaced with a pulmonary homograft with the inherent risk of calcified degeneration. We studied 46 living-related primary renal allograft recipients between June 1980 and Jan 1988 to determine if enhancement of allograft survival by donor specific transfusions requires a major histocompatibility complex mismatch between the blood/kidney donor and the recipient. Transplantation for end-stage pulmonary disease is now established as an effective therapy for selected patients. Initially, combined heart and lung transplantation was the only therapeutic option for these patients. Recent developments that include improved immunosuppression, preservation of grafts and technical advances and markedly decreasing bronchial anastomotic complications have made unilateral pulmonary transplantation a clinical reality.

Because the significance of donor age in penetrating keratoplasty remains controversial, a study was undertaken to analyze the results of keratoplastics performed with older (greater than 70) and younger (less than 55) donor corneas. The anesthetic management of 17 patients undergoing cardiac transplantation is described. Recipients had severe biventricular failure and pulmonary hypertension. Careful administration of diazepam and morphine was the preferred induction method, and pancuronium was the favored relaxant for both intubation and maintenance. Two cases of chronic hidradenitis suppurativa of the perineum are presented. Both patients suffered through many years of discomfort and social isolation, undergoing multiple temporizing procedures. The treatment course pursued is described in detail. It is hoped that a greater appreciation of the disabling nature of this disease will lead to earlier, definitive therapy.

Thirty-one children received 38 kidney transplants from 22 live and 16 cadaver donors. Among the 31 patients, 25 received one transplant each, 5 received two transplants each and 1 received three transplants.
