In order to investigate the pathogenesis of periventricular lucency (PVL) in hydrocephalus, CT scans were performed with monitoring of the epidural pressure in a series of dogs with hydrocephalus induced with kaolin. PVL of various degrees was detected in the experimental animals, which disappeared immediately after a shunting operation. Correlations have been attempted between PVL on CT scans and histological examinations, contrast enhancement studies, metrizamide ventriculography, and measurement of regional cerebral blood flow in the periventricular white matter. The relationship between high density (HD) on computed tomographic (CT) scans (which indicates a collection of blood in the subarachnoid space) and cerebral vasospasm was studied in 177 patients with ruptured aneurysm. A new method for the measurement of tibial torsion using computerised transverse tomography is presented. Its accuracy is equal to that of cadaveric skeletal measurement. This method may be used in patients with unilateral post-traumatic torsional deformities, especially when these are combined with genu varum or valgum. The study of torsional aberrations in connection with congenital abnormalities of the foot is of further interest.

In 168 patients with ruptured intracranial aneurysms, the pathology of intracranial hemorrhage visualized on CT was analyzed. Blood in the subarachnoid space could be visualized in 95% of cases within three days after SAH and 75% of 106 cases within two weeks after SAH. The results of 67 examinations with computerized axial tomography are presented with reference to the indications. 15 examinations were performed in exophthalmos, 11 in unknown visual field defects, 9 in optic atrophy of unknown origin, 8 each in optic neuritis, papilledema and unclear visual disturbance. 8 furthur examinations were performed in different cases. The axial computerized tomography proved to be an efficient complementary examination technique if it is limited to well defined indications. The best results are obtained examining exophthalmos and visual field defects.

Nonvisualization of a kidney in an elderly man was investigated by computed tomography (CT). Simple low lying ureteral obstruction was excluded, multiple pathologic abnormalities were identified and causes for the nonvisualization are postulated. This case report demonstrates the important effect CT scanning produced on the clinical management of the patient in question.

Because of its noninvasive property of direct imaging of the size and shape of the lesion, CT scan is significant not only for the diagnosis of the brain tumors, but also for the assessment of its chronological and/or therapeutic change in size. This study was performed to comparatively assess the diagnostic accuracy of computerized tomography (CT) and nuclear liver-scanning in detecting and defining circumscript and diffuse liver diseases in 83 patients. Presence or absence of liver diseases was assessed based on the results of invasive diagnostic procedures such as biopsy, laparoscopy, laparotomy, and/or autopsy. Six patients with myasthenia gravis and suspected thymoma underwent radiologic investigation using plain chest radiography, conventional anterior mediastinal tomography, and computed tomography. All underwent exploratory thoractomy within 1 month of the radiologic workup. In three of the five cases that proved to be thymoma, CT yielded significant diagnostic information that bore directly on the management and/or prognosis of the patient. We therefore believe that CT may be a valuable adjunct in the radiologic investigation of the patient with myasthenia gravis.

Computed tomography (CT) has added an important new dimension to the radiological evaluation of diseases of the paranasal sinuses and face. Using transverse and coronal scans, accurate assessment of the character and extent of mass lesions in this region can be achieved. Erosion of thin bony lamine and involvement of soft tissue structures of the face can be seen. Most important, CT is capable of precisely defining the extension of lesions into the pterygopalatine fossa, orbit, and cranial cavity, information that is essential for therapeutic planning.
