PURPOSE: To provide latest evidence on the use of suprapubic catheter (SPC) versus urethral catheter (UC) after robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RARP).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic revision of literature was performed up to September 2017 using different search engines (Pubmed, Ovid, Scopus) to identified studies comparing the use of SPC versus standard UC after RARP. Identification and selection of the studies were conducted according to the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis criteria. For continuous outcomes, the weighted mean differe

AIMS: To explore the information needs of long-term indwelling urinary catheter users, the consequences for patients of inadequate information and how these needs could be met.
BACKGROUND: Previous studies have drawn attention to the lack of information given to indwelling catheter users and how users would benefit from more. Little is known about the varied and detailed information needs of long-term indwelling catheter users.
DESIGN: A qualitative interpretative approach was used, combining thematic analysis with constant comparison. A diverse sample of people living in the community with

BACKGROUND: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) have been associated with increases in morbidity and mortality as well as increased costs of hospitalization. At our institution, we implemented a protocol for indwelling catheter use, maintenance, and removal based on Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines, in efforts to reduce CAUTI rates.
METHODS: A hospital committee of quality stewards focused on several measures which included staff education, modification of existing systems to ensure compliance, and auditing of patient care areas for catheter utilizat

OBJECTIVE: Prior studies suggest that obese patients are at increased risk for complications following continent catheterizable urinary (CCU) channel surgery. We hypothesized that postoperative weight gain increases the risk of channel angulation, difficulty catheterizing, and possible channel perforation requiring subfascial revision. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether baseline obesity or becoming overweight/obese postoperatively was associated with a greater risk of subfascial revision.
METHOD: We reviewed retrospectively an institutional database of patients who underwent CC

Acute urinary retention in pregnancy secondary to an impacted uterus is a rare occurrence. It can have non-specific presentations, leading to delay in diagnosis, hence potentially increasing maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. A number of risk factors for the condition have been identified. We describe the case of a 31-year-old woman presenting with urinary retention at 18 weeks' gestation. Clinical examination revealed features consistent with a gravid uterus impacted in the pelvis. Management with urinary catheterisation followed by gentle manual disimpaction of the uterus was succes

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate different patterns of after-contraction (A-C) waves detected during urodynamic evaluation in women.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 4,110 women were prospectively observed regarding the presence of A-C waves upon urodynamic evaluation. Intravenous pyelography and ultrasound were requested. Paired t test, χ(2) test, Wilcoxon's rank sum test and correlation analysis were performed with a 95% significance level.
RESULTS: There were three distinguishing patterns of A-C: type I - detrusor contraction after the regular voiding phase, type II - detrusor contraction persisting after the

OBJECTIVE: To compare primary urethral realignment (PR) with suprapubic cystostomy (SPC) for the management of pelvic fracture-associated posterior urethral injuries with regards to rates of stricture, erectile dysfunction, and urinary incontinence.
METHODS: Two electronic databases (MEDLINE and EMBASE) were searched with the assistance of a librarian. Title, abstract, and full text screening was carried out by 2 independent reviewers, with discrepancies resolved by consensus. Narrative reviews, surveys, and historical articles were excluded. Only studies reporting a direct comparison of PR v

Urinary incontinence is a common condition, which, although not life-threatening, impairs the health-related quality of life of affected individuals. All women complaining of incontinence require a basic assessment and those with complex or refractory symptoms may benefit from urodynamic studies. Initial treatment includes lifestyle advice, behavioral modifications, bladder retraining and pelvic floor muscle training. For those women with persistent stress urinary incontinence following conservative therapy, surgical management might be considered. The development of the minimally invasive, re

BACKGROUND: Posterior urethra primary realignment (PUPR) after complete transection may decrease the gap between the ends of the transected urethra, tamponade the retropubic bleeding, and optimize urinary drainage without the need of suprapubic catheter facilitating concurrent pelvic orthopedic and trauma procedures. Historically, the distorted anatomy after pelvic trauma has been a major surgical challenge. The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship of the severity of the pelvic fracture to the success of endoscopic and immediate PUPR following complete posterior urethral disrupt

OBJECTIVES: Based on the 2010 Israeli Medical Association recommendations, young children with suspected urinary tract infection (UTI) are mildly sedated with oral or intranasal midazolam to reduce the distress associated with urethral catheterisation (UC). The primary objective of this study was to examine the rate of urine culture contamination (UCC) in infants who underwent UC with and without sedation. Other objectives were to evaluate serious adverse events and emergency department (ED) length of stay.
METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was conducted in a paediatric ED.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: We used the Valentini-Besson-Nelson (VBN) mathematical micturition model to analyze the potential obstructive effect of a 7-F transurethral catheter on the voiding process during intubated flow (IF) in women. Our hypothesis was that incomplete sphincter relaxation leads to residual sphincter pressure.
METHODS: We reviewed a urodynamic database of women referred for evaluation of lower urinary tract dysfunction. Exclusion criteria were neurological disease or grade ≥2 prolapse. Eligible women underwent free uroflow (FF-1) before cystometry, an IF (7-F urethral cath

BACKGROUND: People requiring long-term bladder draining commonly experience catheter-associated urinary tract infection and other problems.
OBJECTIVES: To determine if certain catheter policies are better than others in terms of effectiveness, complications, quality of life and cost-effectiveness in long-term catheterised adults and children.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Incontinence Group Specialised Trials Register (searched 28 September 2011). Additionally, we examined all reference lists of identified trials.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical management for neurogenic bladder may require abandonment of the native urethra due to intractable urinary incontinence, irreparable urethral erosion, severe scarring from previous transurethral procedures, or urethrocutaneous fistula. In these patients, bladder neck closure (BNC) excludes the native urethra and provides continence while preserving the antireflux mechanism of the native ureters. This procedure is commonly combined with ileovesicostomy or continent catheterizable stoma, with or without augmentation enterocystoplasty. Alternatively, BNC can be paired with sup

Urinary catheters are widely used for hospitalized patients and are often associated with high rates of urinary tract infection. We evaluated in vitro the antiadherence activity of a novel antiseptic Gendine-coated urinary catheter against several multidrug-resistant bacteria. Gendine-coated urinary catheters were compared to silver hydrogel-coated Foley catheters and uncoated catheters. Bacterial biofilm formation was assessed by quantitative culture and scanning electron microscopy. These data were further correlated to an in vivo rabbit model. We challenged 31 rabbits daily for 4 days by in

INTRODUCTION: All Danish hospitals are obliged to start a process of accreditation during 2009. On this background and in order to create a baseline for hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) as well as focus on infection control, we have initiated semi-annually prevalence surveys on HAIs in the North Denmark Region (RN).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prevalence surveys were carried out in all somatic hospital wards in RN, twice in 2006 and once in 2007. The four most important HAIs were registered: urinary tract infection (UTI), pneumonia, deep surgical site infection and septicaemia. Moreover, the us
