BACKGROUND: Maintenance haemodialysis patients often suffer from secondary hyperparathyroidism and serum parathyroid hormone levels may be influenced by nutritional variables.
METHODS: We examined serum bio-intact parathyroid hormone (BiPTH) and plasma vitamin C in 117 chronic haemodialysis patients. Plasma vitamin C was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection, on samples collected before start of the dialysis treatment.

Deficiency of vitamin D is usually caused by dietary deficiency and/or lack of exposure to sunlight in dark skinned individuals living at northern latitudes. INTRODUCTION: Vitamin D is a vital element for bone health but the problem of vitamin D deficiency is underestimated in Hong Kong.
METHODS: Serum 25(OH)D and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels were evaluated in 382 community dwelling Chinese adults >50 years for their relation with bone mineral density (BMD) and risks of osteoporotic fractures and falls.
