Correlation between vitamin D and poor sleep status in restless legs syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is closely related to poorer sleep quality. Vitamin D can regulate sleep regulation, cell proliferation, and differentiation. To measure whether vitamin D has predictive value for poor sleep quality in RLS was our aim in this study. METHODS: To analyze the serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] in 95 RLS patients. We used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to measure sleep quality. Subjects had been divided into a normal and poor-sleeper groups according to the PSQI score. Using correlation and regression analysis to explore underlying et

Sleep Pattern Is Related to Mental Health among Chinese Collegiate Student Athletes.

Regarding the association between sleep and napping duration and mental health in young and older adults, some studies indicated a positive association, while others indicated a negative, or no, association between them. Moreover, collegiate student athletes have different mental health stressors, such as training pressure, improving sports performance, and relationships with coaches. Therefore, sleep is important for athletes. Whether sleep duration is related to their mental health is unclear. Thus, this study aimed to examine the association between nighttime sleep duration, daytime napping

Sleep disturbances in ADHD: investigating the contribution of polygenic liability for ADHD and sleep-related phenotypes.

Sleep disturbances are common in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and associated with poor outcomes. We tested whether, in children with ADHD, (1) polygenic liability for sleep phenotypes is over- or under-transmitted from parents, (2) this liability is linked to comorbid sleep disturbances, and (3) ADHD genetic risk is associated with comorbid sleep disturbances. We derived polygenic scores (PGS) for insomnia, chronotype, sleep duration, and ADHD, in 758 children (5-18 years old) diagnosed with ADHD and their parents. We conducted polygenic transmission disequilibrium tests for

[Comorbidity of tension headache and insomnia].

The review shows the relationship between tension-type headache (THT) and insomnia. The pathophysiological and psychological mechanisms of their mutual influence on each other are considered. Evidence is provided that the combination of these pathologies often leads to the development of maladaptive coping strategies that aggravate the patient's condition. The features and difficulties of therapy of patients suffering from TTH and insomnia are considered in detail. It has been shown that the treatment of such patients should include approaches aimed at stopping TTH, sleep disorders and associa

The association of adverse childhood experiences and its subtypes with adulthood sleep problems: A systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies.

Adverse childhood experience (ACE) is a powerful risk factor for long-term sleep health. However, the degree to which ACE and its subtypes contribute to adulthood sleep problems remains unknown. For this systematic review and meta-analysis, PubMed, Embase, Web of Sciences, Cochrane library, and CNKI (Chinese) were searched from inception to 1 December 2021. Cohort studies that examined the association between ACEs (aged <18 y) and adulthood sleep outcomes (aged ≥18 y) were included. The most fully adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were extracted and pooled using the random-effects model. A total of n

An emerging role of astrocytes in aging/neuroinflammation and gut-brain axis with consequences on sleep and sleep disorders.

Understanding the role of astrocytes in the central nervous system has changed dramatically over the last decade. The accumulating findings indicate that glial cells are involved not only in the maintenance of metabolic and ionic homeostasis and in the implementation of trophic functions but also in cognitive functions and information processing in the brain. Currently, there are some controversies regarding the role of astrocytes in complex processes such as aging of the nervous system and the pathogenesis of age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Many findings confirm the important function

Parents' Experiences of Having a Child with Down Syndrome and Sleep Difficulties.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep disorders are prevalent in children with Down Syndrome (DS). However, sleep treatment is not always readily accessed by this group. This study aims to understand families' experiences of having a child with DS and sleep difficulties, and in particular, their healthcare experiences, with the goal of informing practice improvements. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 34 parents (fathers n = 4 and mothers n = 30) with open-ended questions about parents' experiences of sleep, family dynamics, and healthcare. We operationalized a reflexive Thematic Analysis. R

Sleep deficiency, operational fatigue and the interplay of compromising factors: Analysis to aid in fatigue management.

The United States Navy is a high-reliability organization that must maintain optimum performance under challenging conditions. One key challenge for sailors is obtaining sufficient sleep, which can lead to fatigue and other outcomes that compromise operational readiness. Identifying sleep issues and their causes is critical for military leaders to care for their personnel, and to make informed, risk-based operational decisions. Though previous studies in shipboard environments have implicated factors responsible for insufficient sleep (e.g. poor sleep environment and work demands), there has b
