Therapeutic objectives and their practical achievement in type 2 diabetes.

This paper offers a broad but selective account of the context of type 2 diabetes at the start of the new millennium. It outlines the major long-term threats to health and life of people with type 2 diabetes and indicates that, while their relative impacts may differ, the burden of the specific "microvascular" and the atherosclerotic "macrovascular" complications of diabetes weigh as heavily on people with type 2 as on those with type 1 diabetes. Correction of hyperglycemia still has a leading role among therapeutic objectives in type 2 diabetes, but the concept of the "defence in depth" and t

Microsystem components and EFL achievement in adolescence: A network analysis.

Drawing on ecological systems theory, we investigate how microsystem components (i.e., individual characteristics and the family, school, and peer environments) collectively relate to English as a foreign language (EFL) achievement. To this end, we administered a cross-sectional questionnaire to 1395 Chinese middle school students and conducted a network analysis to model these relationships. The results indicated that dimensions of study engagement (dedication and vigor), teacher support, and family socioeconomic status (SES) were directly and positively associated with EFL achievement, where…

Academic achievement in children born extremely preterm: a cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Children born extremely preterm (EPT) vary greatly regarding academic outcomes, underscoring the need to investigate subgroups in … maternal education, cognitive impairment and ADHD/ASD diagnosis increased the risk of poor academic achievement. CONCLUSIONS: EPT birth was associated with poor academic achievement, but the risk varies substantially within the EPT group, primarily based on cognitive impairment, ADHD/ASD diagnosis and maternal education. However, the risk of poor academic ac …

Subconcussive Head Injuries Negatively Affect Academic Achievement in Adolescent Males.

Background/Objectives: To determine the effects of a subconcussive head injury on adolescent student academic achievement assessed by grade point average (GPA). Methods: The study utilised an experimental (subconcussive head injury, n = 45) and a matched pair control group (n = 45). Data were collated at baseline (i.e., the term prior to sustaining a subconcussive head injury) and the term the subconcussive head injury occurred. Subconcussive head injuries were preliminarily assessed onsite by a registered nurse and diagnosed by a general practitioner using established protocol. The average su…

The effect of stand-your-ground laws on student achievement.

OBJECTIVES: To examine how "stand-your-ground" (SYG) laws affect children's academic performance. METHODS: We analyze 2008-2018 nationwide school district-level math and reading/language arts (RLA) test scores for 3rd-8th grade students combined with information on SYG laws by state and year. We implement two estimation approaches-two-way-fixed effects and group-time average treatment effects-and conduct analyses stratified by student race (Black, White) and area income level. RESULTS: We find negative effects of SYG on math achievement among all students using both estimation approaches (-0…

Minimal symptom expression achievement over time in generalized myasthenia gravis.

OBJECTIVES: Minimal symptom expression (MSE), defined as myasthenia gravis (MG) activities of daily living profile (MGADL) score 0 or 1, has been recently used as an indicator of treatment goal in MG. However, no study has determined when MSE is achieved. The current study aimed to investigate the timing and incidence of MSE achievement in generalized MG patients. METHODS: Eighty-five patients with acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive generalized MG were included. They were followed-up maximum 3 years after starting immunotherapy, and we reviewed the MGADL score, prednisolone dose, and ac…

Reading Achievement of Deaf Students: Challenging the Fourth Grade Ceiling.

Historically it has been reported that deaf students do not achieve age-appropriate outcomes in reading, with this performance often being c … anguage as the primary mode of communication. Specifically, the goal was to establish whether their achievement approached that of their hearing age peers and to identify demographic factors influencing performance (i.e., gender, unilateral/bilateral hearing loss, personal amplification, level of auditory functioning, grade placement, additional disabilities, …

However, there was limited agreement between asTTle and teacher rating of achievement in reading (κ = 0.23 (95% confidence interval 0.07-0.40)) and no significant agreement in mathematics (κ = 0.07 (95% confidence interval -0.09-0.22)). Only 45% of children performing below the curriculum level in reading and 52% in mathematics were …

Weight Reduction Goal Achievement Among Veterans With Mental Health Diagnoses.

BACKGROUND: Despite the use of weight management programs among veterans, the impact of mental health diagnoses on weight reduction goal achievement is unknown. AIMS: We aimed to describe the prevalence and association of mental health diagnoses with a 5% weight reduction goal achievement. METHODS: Logistic regression was used to describe the association between mental health diagnoses and weight reduction goal achievement at 6, 12, and 24 months among 402 veterans enrolled in a weight management program. RESULTS: More than 43% of veterans had a mental health diagnoses, with depressive disorde…

A Multilevel Meta-analysis on Academic Achievement Among Maltreated Youth.

Maltreatment can influence normative development and negatively impact emotional, behavioral, and social functioning in youth. As a result, it is not surprising that maltreated youth, as compared to non-maltreated youth, tend to underperform academically. Research on the academic performance of maltreated youth has increased over the last decade and several review papers have been published in this area. While the conclusions of these review articles have been that maltreated youth are at greater risk for academic deficits as compared to their non-maltreated peers, there are several conflictin

School achievement and adult qualifications among adoptees: a longitudinal study.

Data from the National Child Development study (NCDS) were used to examine predictors of attainment among adoptees, nonadopted children from similar birth circumstances, and other members of this national birth cohort. Adoptees performed more positively than nonadopted children from similar birth circumstances on childhood tests of reading, mathematics, and general ability, and retained this advantage in school-leaving and later adult qualifications. In addition to family SES and material circumstances, measures of the educational environment of the home and of parental interest in education e

School achievement and failure in very low birth weight children.

The extent to which low birth weight confers a risk for poor school function remains an important question. Children (N = 1868) in four birth weight categories [extremely low birth weight (ELBW; children weighed < or = 1000 g at birth, n = 247), other very low birth weight (1001 through 1500 g, n = 364), heavier low birth weight (1501 through 2500 g, n = 724), and normal birth weight (NBW > 2500 g, n = 533)] were compared on indicators of school achievement which included grade failure, placement in special classes, classification as handicapped, and math and reading achievement scores (Woodco…

Achievements in scalp reconstruction.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Reconstruction of scalp defects remains a challenge. This article reviews the reconstructive options and provides recommendations for scalp restoration based on current literature. RECENT FINDINGS: It is difficult to apply the standard reconstructive ladder to scalp defects due to the scalp's unique properties and paucity of adjacent tissue. Because of the frequency of large resections and the limited local tissue options microvascular free tissue transfer is a mainstay in scalp reconstruction and has been shown to be well tolerated and reliable with acceptable cosmetic and
