Characterization of Novel Lytic Bacteriophages of Achromobacter marplantensis Isolated from a Pneumonia Patient.

Achromobacter spp. are becoming increasingly associated with lung infections in patients suffering from cystic fibrosis (CF). A. marplatensis, which is closely related to A. xylosoxidans, has been isolated from the lungs of CF patients and other human infections. This article describes the isolation, morphology and characterization of two lytic bacteriophages specific for an A. marplatensis strain isolated from a pneumonia patient. This host strain was the causal agent of hospital acquired pneumonia-the first clinical report of such an occurrence. Full genome sequencing revealed bacteriophage …

Outbreak of Achromobacter xylosoxidans and Ochrobactrum anthropi Infections after Prostate Biopsies, France, 2014.

We report an outbreak of healthcare-associated prostatitis involving rare environmental pathogens in immunocompetent patients undergoing transrectal prostate biopsies at Hôpital Édouard Herriot (Lyon, France) during August 13-October 10, 2014. Despite a fluoroquinolone-based prophylaxis, 5 patients were infected with Achromobacter xylosoxidans and 3 with Ochrobactrum anthropi, which has not been reported as pathogenic in nonimmunocompromised persons. All patients recovered fully. Analysis of the outbreak included case investigation, case-control study, biopsy procedure review, microbiologic te…

Analysis of virulence of the emerging opportunistic human pathogen Achromobacter in a zebrafish embryo model.

BACKGROUND: Achromobacter spp. are emerging opportunistic pathogens of concern in people with cystic fibrosis (CF) and immunocompromised individuals. These bacteria are known for their intrinsic antibiotic resistance and ability to evade host immune defences. A more comprehensive understanding of the direct interaction between Achromobacter spp. and the host innate immune system is necessary for the development of effective intervention strategies. In this study, we used zebrafish embryos to investigate the pathogenic potential of a panel of clinical Achromobacter spp. isolates and analysed th…

Pulmonary mucormycosis and Achromobacter xylosoxidans co-infection in an immunocompromised host: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Pulmonary mucormycosis (PM) is a severe fungal infection threatening immunocompromised individuals, especially with uncontrolled diabetes. Co-infection with bacteria like Achromobacter xylosoxidans complicates management. We report a rare and fatal case of PM co-infected with A. xylosoxidans, which was further complicated by a subsequent SARS-CoV-2 superinfection. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old female with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus and multiple comorbidities presented with worsening dyspnea. Investigations revealed severe hyperglycemia (927 mg/d…

Chronic otorrhea and osteomyelitis of the external auditory canal by Achromobacter xylosoxidans: an uncommon diagnosis.

PURPOSE: Achromobacter xylosoxidans is an emerging pathogen mainly associated with resistant nosocomial infections. This bacteria had been isolated in the ear together with other pathogens in cultures from patients with chronic otitis media, but it had never been reported as a cause of osteomyelitis of the external auditory canal. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a unique case of a healthy 81-year-old woman who presented with left chronic otorrhea refractory to topical and oral antibiotic treatment. Otomicroscopy revealed an erythematous and exudative external auditory canal (EAC) with scant oto…

Identification of Virulence Factors Involved in a Murine Model of Severe Achromobacter xylosoxidans Infection.

Achromobacter xylosoxidans (Ax) is an opportunistic pathogen and causative agent of numerous infections particularly in immunocompromised individuals with increasing prevalence in cystic fibrosis (CF). To date, investigations have focused on the clinical epidemiology and genomic comparisons of Ax isolates, yet little is known about disease pathology or the role that specific virulence factors play in tissue invasion or damage. Here, we model an acute Ax lung infection in immunocompetent C57BL/6 mice and immunocompromised CF mice, revealing a link between in vitro cytotoxicity and disease in an…

Insights into the Binding Interaction of Catechol 1,2-Dioxygenase with Catechol in Achromobacter xylosoxidans DN002.

Microbial remediation has become one of the promising ways to eliminate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution due to its efficient enzyme metabolism system. Catechol 1,2-dioxygenase (C12O) is a crucial rate-limiting enzyme in the degradation pathway of PAHs in Achromobacter xylosoxidans DN002 that opens the benzene ring through the ortho-cleavage pathway. However, little attention has been given to explore the interaction mechanism of relevant enzyme-substrate. This study aims to investigate the binding interaction between C12O of strain DN002 and catechol by means of a molecular b…

A case of meningitis due to Achromobacter xylosoxidans in a child with a polymalformative syndrome: a case report.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Achromobacter xylosoxidans (AX), also called alcaligenes xylosoxidans, is an aerobic, non-fermenting mobile, gram-negative bacillus which was first isolated in an otorrhea samples in 1971. Infections with these species are quite rare and have often been described in immunocompromised and in premature infants. However, very few cases of meningitis related to AX have been reported in the literature. The authors report a new case of meningitis due to AX in a 45-day-old female infant with polymarformative syndrome meningitis was confirmed by a cyto-biochemical analysis and culture of the cerebrosp…

Motility, Biofilm Formation and Antimicrobial Efflux of Sessile and Planktonic Cells of Achromobacter xylosoxidans.

Achromobacter xylosoxidans is an innately multidrug-resistant bacterium capable of forming biofilms in the respiratory tract of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. During the transition from the planktonic stage to biofilm growth, bacteria undergo a transcriptionally regulated differentiation. An isolate of A. xylosoxidans cultured from the sputum of a CF patient was separated into sessile and planktonic stages in vitro, and the transcriptomes were compared. The selected genes of interest were subsequently inactivated, and flagellar motility was found to be decisive for biofilm formation in vitro. …

Cefiderocol susceptibility of Achromobacter spp.: study of an accurately identified collection of 230 strains.

BACKGROUND: Achromobacter spp. are opportunistic pathogens, mostly infecting immunocompromised patients and patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and considered as difficult-to-treat pathogens due to both intrinsic resistance and the possibility of acquired antimicrobial resistance. Species identification remains challenging leading to imprecise descriptions of resistance in each taxon. Cefiderocol is a broad-spectrum siderophore cephalosporin increasingly used in the management of Achromobacter infections for which susceptibility data remain scarce. We aimed to describe the susceptibility to cef…
