Biological features of the pecten oculi of the European wild quail (Coturnix coturnix): Adaptative habits to Northern Egyptian coast with novel vision to its SEM-EDX analysis.

The present investigation was prepared to give a complete ultrastructural characterization of the pecten oculi of the diurnal European wild Quail to describe their adaptation habits to the Northern Egyptian coast. Our work declares the first endeavor is the elemental analysis using scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) to show the migration effect on their eye. The intra-ocular quadrilateral trapezoid black pigmented plicated type pecten oculi were observed on the postero-inferior wall of the eyeball with craniocaudal and posterio-anterior directions along the fetal fi

Multi-Institutional Outcomes of Stereotactic Magnetic Resonance Image Guided Adaptive Radiation Therapy With a Median Biologically Effective Dose of 100 Gy10 for Non-bone Oligometastases.

PURPOSE: Randomized data show a survival benefit of stereotactic ablative body radiation therapy in selected patients with oligometastases (OM). Stereotactic magnetic resonance guided adaptive radiation therapy (SMART) may facilitate the delivery of ablative dose for OM lesions, especially those adjacent to historically dose-limiting organs at risk, where conventional approaches preclude ablative dosing. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The RSSearch Registry was queried for OM patients (1-5 metastatic lesions) treated with SMART. Freedom from local progression (FFLP), freedom from distant progression (

Biologically Equivalent Dose Comparison Between Magnetic Resonance-Guided Adaptive and Computed Tomography-Guided Internal Target Volume-Based Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy for Liver Tumors.

Background and aim Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has been increasingly adopted in the field of radiotherapy, and the most advanced MR image-guided radiotherapy is known as MR-guided online adaptive radiotherapy (MRgOART), which integrates MRI and linac systems. Few attempts have yet been made to directly compare treatment outcomes between the MRgOART and standard computed tomography (CT)-guided radiotherapy (CTgRT). Besides, it is reported that the biologically equivalent dose (BED) may be a good predictor of the local control (LC) and the overall survival (OS) for liver tumors. The purpose

Mesenchymal stem cells-derived extracellular vesicles protect against oxidative stress-induced xenogeneic biological root injury via adaptive regulation of the PI3K/Akt/NRF2 pathway.

Xenogeneic extracellular matrices (xECM) for cell support have emerged as a potential strategy for addressing the scarcity of donor matrices for allotransplantation. However, the poor survival rate or failure of xECM-based organ transplantation is due to the negative impacts of high-level oxidative stress and inflammation on seed cell viability and stemness. Herein, we constructed xenogeneic bioengineered tooth roots (bio-roots) and used extracellular vesicles from human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hASC-EVs) to shield bio-roots from oxidative damage. Pretreatment with hASC-EVs redu

Biologically Guided Optimization of Test Target Location for Rod-mediated Dark Adaptation in Age-related Macular Degeneration: Alabama Study on Early Age-related Macular Degeneration 2 Baseline.

PURPOSE: We evaluate the impact of test target location in assessing rod-mediated dark adaptation (RMDA) along the transition from normal aging to intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD). We consider whether RMDA slows because the test locations are near mechanisms leading to or resulting from high-risk extracellular deposits. Soft drusen cluster under the fovea and extend to the inner ring of the ETDRS grid where rods are sparse. Subretinal drusenoid deposits (SDDs) appear first in the outer superior subfield of the ETDRS grid where rod photoreceptors are maximal and spread toward

Enhanced deep nitrogen removal from low C/N wastewater via manganese-catalyzed iron-carbon micro-electrolysis coupled biological system: performance, mechanism, and microbial adaptability.

Efficient nitrate removal from low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) wastewater remains challenging due to the scarcity of electron donors in conventional biological denitrification. To address this limitation, a synergistic system coupling manganese-catalyzed iron-carbon micro-electrolysis (IMC-ME) with biological denitrification was developed. Under carbon-deficient conditions (C/N = 2), the coupled system achieved 90.1% nitrate removal and 77.2% total nitrogen (TN) removal, substantially outperforming the standalone biological process (49.4% TN removal). Mechanistically, manganese dioxide functioned

Evolution from mixed to fixed handedness in mirror-image flowers: insights from adaptive dynamics.

Mirror-image flowers (enantiostyly) involve a form of sexual asymmetry in which a flower's style is deflected either to the left or right side, with a pollinating anther orientated in the opposite direction. This curious floral polymorphism, which was known but not studied by Charles Darwin, occurs in at least 11 unrelated angiosperm families and represents a striking example of adaptive convergence in form and function associated with cross-pollination by insects. In several lineages, dimorphic enantiostyly (one stylar orientation per plant, both forms occurring within populations) has evolve

Effect of a 12-week high-intensity exercise intervention: a comparison of cardiac exercise adaptations during biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drug treatment (TNF inhibitors vs IL-6 signalling inhibitors) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis - study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: The chronic inflammatory state in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) augments the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), with pro-inflammatory cytokines tumour necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) playing a vital role. Consequently, biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) may attenuate that risk. IL-6 is also a myokine, secreted from exercising skeletal muscles, where IL-6 exhibits anti-inflammatory effects that may ameliorate the risk of CVD. In healthy humans treated with IL-6 signalling inhibitors (IL-6i), exercise induced loss of visceral fat mass and cardi

Bacterial adaptation to essential oils and their main compounds in food systems: mechanisms related to antibacterial resistance.

Essential oils (EOs) are complex mixtures of volatile metabolites with strong biological properties. Their multi-target mechanisms confer rapid bactericidal activity, lowering the likelihood of resistance development compared to antibiotics. This review examines bacterial responses to EO-induced damage, including adaptation, tolerance, resistance, cross‑adaptation, and collateral sensitivity, which are often overlooked in existing reviews of EOs' biological efficacy. Additionally, it links EO-adaptation to food, including application methods, biofilms, and interactions with food components.

Gene loss and compensatory evolution as a source of metabolic preadaptations.

Gene loss is common, yet whether it is merely an evolutionary dead-end or can promote future adaptation to new environments remains debated. Here, we systematically tested whether harmful loss of metabolic genes, followed by compensatory evolution, generates preadaptations to alternative nutrients in Escherichia coli. Our analysis revealed a striking outcome beyond simple growth restoration, where repair of a genetic defect yielded growth exceeding the unperturbed wild type on carbon sources not encountered during evolution. Such latent growth gains occurred across multiple deletion background

Neo-Paleyan biology.

There is a 'Neo-Paleyan' tradition in British evolutionary theorising, which began with Darwin and continues to the present day. This tradition conceives of adaptation in terms of design, and it often puts natural selection in the role of an ersatz designer. There are significant disanalogies between Paleyan conceptions of design and modern conceptions of adaptation and selection, which help to explain why the neo-Paleyan programme is sometimes treated with hostility. These general disanalogies do not suffice to dismiss the most interesting forms of recent neo-Paleyanism, which draw on theoret

Roles of H2S in adaptation of alpine plants Lamiophlomis rotata to altitude gradients.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an important gaseous transmitter in organisims. It widespreads in the organs and tissues of animals and participates in the biological process of cardiovascular relaxation, cell apoptosis and protection, inflammation and neuromodulation. H2S also can be synthesized in plants system and is involved in stress responses and the biological process of growth and development. This review describes the synthesis and biological function of H2S in plants. Based on our research for the adaptation of Lamiophlomis rotata to different altitude gradients, we firstly proposed H2S pl

Evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds.

The first generation of species-selective phenoxy herbicides went into use at the same time as modern antibiotics, chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides and new fungicides and rodenticides. No resistance has appeared to the still widely used phenoxy herbicides. However, resistance has developed, in many isolated areas around the world, to s-triazine herbicides and, in a few small areas, to bipyridillium herbicides. The parameters of population genetics that govern herbicide resistance and those that govern resistance of microorganisms and fungi to other xenobiotics are the same: generations, se

Inferring Adaptation at Community Composition Level From the Relationship Between Succession Rate and Global Change Intensity.

In response to anthropogenic environmental changes, biological communities often undergo compositional changes, which are traditionally thought to represent adaptation. However, this hypothesis and its mechanism remain surprisingly underexplored. In this study, we conducted a 10-year nitrogen deposition experiment in the Eurasian steppe, manipulating nine intensities under two management strategies (fencing or mowing). As the intensity increased from 0-20 to 50 g N m-2 yr-1, the succession rates of both plant and soil microbial communities first increased but then decreased, implying that high

[Biological properties of the isolate of Trichinella spp. from a jackal in the North-Caucasian Region].

The biological properties of the isolate from Trichinella from ajackal in the North-Caucasian Region of the Russian Federation were studied. The jackal's muscle tissue showed two Trichinella species preserving their genetic isolation during 5 passages on mice. Oval capsules containing live larvae (on day 90 after infection) in the rat muscles corresponds to the conventional description of the species Trichinella spiralis in their morphometric and biological properties. The morphological data, biological properties, and poor adaptation of round capsule-enclosed parasites to rats indirectly show

A Return to Wisdom: Using Sickness Behaviors to Integrate Ecological and Translational Research.

Sickness is typically characterized by fever, anorexia, cachexia, and reductions in social, pleasurable, and sexual behaviors. These responses can be displayed at varying intensities both within and among individuals, and the adaptive nature of sickness responses can be demonstrated by the context-dependent nature of their expression. The study of sickness has become an important area of investigation for researchers in a wide range of areas, including psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) and ecoimmunology (EI). The general goal of PNI is to identify key interactions among the nervous, endocrine and im
