Using a self-presentation perspective, we hypothesized that during social interactions in which social attractiveness could be easily appraised by others, more socially anxious individuals would be more prone to ruminate and rumination would have more adverse emotional consequences. After assessing social anxiety and depressive symptoms, unacquainted college students participated in 45-min structured social interactions manipulated to induce personal self-disclosure or mimic superficial, small-talk. Affective experiences were assessed immediately after and 24h after social interactions. Result

INTRODUCTION: Cocaine use disorder (CUD) often co-occurs with depressive and anxiety symptoms, suggesting shared neurobiological bases. This … ion of cocaine use.
CONCLUSION: The findings identify the insula as a potential neural hub linking affective symptoms with brain morphology in CUD. This integrated approach offers a more nuanced understanding of the complex relationships between psychiatric symptoms and brain structure in CUD.

There is a large and rapidly growing body of literature investigating the therapeutic effects of classic psychedelics in affective and anxiety disorders, but very few studies have examined the inverse of this, that is, the potential for psychedelics to inflict anxiety and affective symptoms. A systematic literature search was performed and 39 papers were included in the final review to qualitatively synthesize the current literature on anxiety and affective disorders related to the use of classic psychedelics. Persisting disorders were less frequent but generally occurred in individuals who pr…

Difficulties in emotion regulation (ER) are a core feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD). To date, studies in BPD have mainly focused on intrapersonal rather than interpersonal emotion regulation (ipER) strategies. Attention to social-affective distractors was found to interfere with working memory (WM) in BPD, which may contribute to impairments in ER. However, whether these difficulties might affect the use of ipER is an open question. This study aimed to investigate the associations between BPD symptoms, ipER strategies, basic WM, and social-affective interference on WM. One hund

Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease with an estimated heritability of around 70%. Previous GWASs have detected several risk loci for psoriasis. To further improve the understanding of the genetic risk factors impacting the disease, we conducted a discovery GWAS in FinnGen and a subsequent replication and meta-analysis with data from the Estonian Biobank and the UK Biobank; the study sample included 925,649 individuals (22,659 cases and 902,990 controls), the largest sample for psoriasis yet. In addition, we conducted downstream analyses to find out more about psoriasis' cross-trait genet

OBJECTIVE: Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) are considered self-limiting and full recovery is expected. Recent studies identify deficits persisting years after mTBI. Large-scale prospective data permit testing the hypothesis that mTBI increases incidence of affective and behavioral symptoms after new, past , or new and past mTBI.
SETTING: The study involved secondary analyses of survey responses from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study.
PARTICIPANTS: Adolescents in the ABCD Study ( n = 11 869; Wave 1, aged 9-10 years; Wave 2, aged 11-12 years) whose parents reported a

INTRODUCTION: Adjustment Disorders (AD) which develop in response to work-related stressors represent a model of psychiatric occupational disease. Major Depressive Episodes (MDE) although often associated to work-related stressors are unlikely recognized by insurance institutes as occupational diseases. Affective temperament and mood spectrum symptoms are possible factors of vulnerability to stress. The aim of this study was to investigate if temperaments and mood spectrum symptoms had a different distribution among workers exposed to occupational stress and suffering from different psychiatri

For some people, seeing pain in others triggers a pain-like experience in themselves: these experiences can either be described in sensory terms and localized to specific body parts (sensory-localized, or S/L) or in affective terms and nonlocalized or whole-body experiences (affective-general, or A/G). In two studies, it is shown that these are linked to different clinical and psychophysiological profiles relative to controls. Study 1 shows that the A/G profile is linked to symptoms of Blood-Injection-Injury Phobia whereas the S/L profile shows some tendency toward eating disorders. Study 2 sh

BACKGROUND: A growing body of literature supports the potential existence of a new clinical entity, Acute suicidal affective disturbance (ASAD), which is characterized by rapid-onset, acute suicidality. This study aimed to evaluate whether current ASAD symptoms (i.e., suicidal intent, thwarted belongingness, perceived burdensomeness, disgust with others and oneself, agitation, irritability, insomnia, and nightmares) comprise a psychopathological network distinct from anxiety and depression symptoms.
METHODS: A sample of 167 psychiatric inpatients completed self-report measures of current ASAD

PURPOSE: Mutations of the protocadherin19 gene (PCDH19) cause a female-related epilepsy of variable severity, with or without mental retarda … patients with PCDH19 mutations exhibit a distinctive electroclinical pattern of focal seizures with affective symptoms, suggesting an epileptogenic dysfunction involving the frontotemporal limbic system. Awareness of this distinctive phenotype will likely enhance recognition of this disorder.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, characterised by ataxic gait, slow saccades and peripheral neuropathy. Levodopa-responsive parkinsonism could be a clinical phenotype of SCA2, especially those of Chinese origin. In addition to these motor symptoms, SCA2 has been associated with depression and cognitive dysfunction, with only rare reports of psychosis. The authors report the presence of severe psychosis, major depression and multiple system atrophy in affected subjects of a Taiwanese family with intermediate CAG repeats within the ATXN2 gene. The

We report about a woman of 60 years who received psychiatric inpatient treatment for an affective disorder with psychotic symptoms on several occasions. As time elapsed symptoms of dementia became more and more obvious. Despite a comprehensive workup with neuroimaging methods (SPECT, PET) the correct diagnosis of Huntington's Chorea was not attained until the characteristic movements appeared. Up till then pathologic movements had hardly occurred and there were no known cases of Huntington's Chorea in the family. This case is remarkable as the patient was not only treated with different antide

BACKGROUND: This post-hoc analysis evaluated the effects of paliperidone extended-release (ER) in patients with schizophrenia and prominent affective symptoms.
METHODS: Pooled data from three 6-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies were analyzed. Subjects received fixed doses of paliperidone ER 3-12 mg/day or placebo. Prominent affective symptoms were defined as depressive (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale [PANSS] depression item score of > or =5 [moderately severe]) and/or manic (PANSS grandiosity score of > or =4 [moderate], plus a score of > or =4 [moderate] on at …

Considering that both observer ratings and patient self-reports on severity of psychopathological symptoms are being used in research and clinical settings, this paper aims to explore the degree of congruence between these two sources. Eighty-two adult outpatients diagnosed with psychotic disorders rated their symptoms using the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI). Observers assessed patients' functioning using the Brief Psychiatry Rating Scale (BPRS). Self-ratings (overall BSI) were strongly correlated to observers' evaluations (overall BPRS). Anxiety/depression symptoms dimension of the BPRS were

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted daily life, and the transition to post-pandemic living presented additional psychological challenges. Previous research shows that individuals with obsessive-compulsive traits and pre-existing mental health histories were vulnerable to adjustment difficulties, which appear to be mediated by depression, anxiety, and stress.
AIMS: This study examined the relationship between post-pandemic adjustment and mental health variables in a population-based cohort during the final lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, tracking outcomes over six month

Parkinson's disease (PD) is frequently accompanied by mood and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) symptoms. The aim of this study is to examine whether the affective and CFS symptoms due to PD are associated with serum biomarkers of neuronal injury in association with immune activation and insulin resistance. Using a case (70 PD patients) control (60 healthy controls) study design, we assessed affective and CFS symptoms, measured the peripheral immune-inflammatory response system (IRS) using interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-10, zinc, and calcium levels, the Homeostasis Model Assessment 2 insulin resistanc

OBJECTIVES: Running therapy has been shown to be efficacious for depression and anxiety disorders. However, little is known about the effects of running therapy on functional brain connectivity.
METHODS: We used resting-state functional MRI scans from 25 individuals with an affective disorder that performed 16 weeks running therapy as part of the MOod Treatment with Antidepressants or Running (MOTAR) study. Using an atlas-based approach we investigated therapy-induced changes in connectivity and topology of several functional systems, e.g. the default-mode and salience networks. We additional

Motherhood is often associated with joy, but it can pose significant challenges, and in some instances lead to perinatal mental health problems. Maternal depressive symptoms can hinder a mother's ability to attune to her infant's needs, potentially affecting caregiving quality and emotional support. This study examines how parenting style and a cognitively stimulating home environment (i.e., individual level) and relative social deprivation (i.e., area level) contribute to the relationship between maternal depressive symptoms and offspring's neurocognitive and affective outcomes at 18 months.
