Multiple pregnancies and air pollution in moderately polluted cities: Is there an association between air pollution and fetal growth?

BACKGROUND: Multiple pregnancies (where more than one fetus develops simultaneously in the womb) are systematically excluded from studies of the impact of air pollution on pregnancy outcomes. This study aims to analyze, in a population of multiple pregnancies, the relationship between fetal growth restriction (FGR), small for gestational age (SGA) and exposure to air pollution in moderately polluted cities. METHODS: All women with multiple pregnancies living in the city of Besançon or in the urban area of Dijon and who delivered at a university hospital between 2005 and 2009 were included. FG…

Household air pollution and personal exposure to air pollutants in rural China - A review.

Solid fuels, an important source of severe Household Air Pollution (HAP) linked to many adverse health outcomes, has been widely consumed around the world. China consumes large amounts of solid fuels and suffers from serious indoor and outdoor air pollution. Though global HAP issues had been reviewed in previous literatures, peer-reviewed Chinese publications were seldom included in those reviews. We conducted a literature review on the studies of HAP and personal exposure in rural China with inputs from peer-reviewed publications in both English and Chinese. A total of 36,572 articles were re…

[Polluting agents and sources of urban air pollution].

This paper is an up-to-date review of the scientific evidence on mechanisms of pollutant generation and health effects for a number of urban air pollutants. The review focuses on main sources and health effect of ozone and photochemical smog, benzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and particulate matter. These agents are "priority pollutants", generated by vehicle traffic, and their regulation is currently being examined by the European Council and the European Commission. The aim is to reach, by the year 2010, values lower than 180 micrograms/m3 for ozone as maximum hourly concentration,

ST-elevation myocardial infarction and air pollution: relationship between hourly air pollution and cardiovascular risk factors.

OBJECTIVE: Air pollution contributes to cardiovascular diseases through oxidative stress, inflammation, autonomic nervous system imbalance, and direct particle translocation. This study examines the relationship between air pollution parameters and risk factors in patients presenting with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). METHODS: This prospective, cross-sectional study included STEMI patients aged at least 18 years in a tertiary hospital. Demographics, comorbidities, seasonal variations, comorbidities, vital signs, hourly air pollution and weather parameters on admission, hospital …

Emerging concern on air pollution and health: Trade-off between air pollution exposure and physical activity.

Air pollution is a major contributor to the global disease burden, especially affecting respiratory and cardiovascular health. However, physical activity is associated with improved lung function, a slower decline in lung function, and lower mortality. The public is more likely to be exposed to air pollution during outdoor physical activity. However, studies on how long-term and short-term exposure to air pollution interacts with physical activity yield inconsistent results, and the thresholds for air pollution and physical activity remain unclear. Thus, more studies are needed to provide suff…

Affective Sensitivity to Air Pollution (ASAP): Person-specific associations between daily air pollution and affective states.

Individuals' sensitivity to climate hazards is a central component of their vulnerability to climate change. In this paper, we introduce and outline the utility of a new intraindividual variability construct, affective sensitivity to air pollution (ASAP)-defined as the extent to which an individual's affective states fluctuate in accordance with daily changes in air quality. As such, ASAP pushes beyond examination of differences in individuals' exposures to air pollution to examination of differences in individuals' sensitivities to air pollution. Building on known associations between air pol…

Modeling exposure to air pollution from the WTC disaster based on reports of perceived air pollution.

We examined the utility of a newly developed perceived air pollution (PAP) scale and of a modeled air pollution (MAP) scale derived from it for predicting previously observed birth outcomes of pregnant women enrolled following September 11, 2001. Women reported their home and work locations in the four weeks after September 11, 2001 and the PAP at each site on a four-point scale designed for this purpose. Locations were geocoded and their distance from the World Trade Center (WTC) site determined. PAP values were used to develop a model of air pollution for a 20-mile radius from the WTC site. …

Effect of air pollution on asthma.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway disease characterized by respiratory symptoms, variable airflow obstruction, bronchial hyperresponsiveness, and airway inflammation. Exposure to air pollution has been linked to an increased risk of asthma development and exacerbation. This review aims to comprehensively summarize recent data on the impact of air pollution on asthma development and exacerbation. Specifically, we reviewed the effects of air pollution on the pathogenic pathways of asthma, including type 2 and non-type 2 inflammatory responses, and airway epithelial barrier dysfunction. Air…

Air Pollution and Interstitial Lung Disease.

This review article explores the multifaceted relationship between air pollution and interstitial lung diseases (ILDs), particularly focusing on idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, the most severe form of fibrotic ILD. Air pollutants are mainly composed of particulate matter, ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). They are recognized as risk factors for several respiratory diseases. However, their specific effects on ILDs and related mechanisms have not been thoroughly studied yet. Emerging evidence suggests that air pollutants may contribute to the deve…

The political fallout of air pollution.

This paper studies the effect of air pollution on voting outcomes. We use data from 60 federal and state elections in Germany from 2000 to 2018 and exploit plausibly exogenous fluctuations in ambient air pollution within counties across election dates. Higher air pollution on election day shifts votes away from incumbent parties and toward opposition parties. An increase in the concentration of particulate matter (PM10) by 10 [Formula: see text]g/m[Formula: see text]-around two within-county SDs-reduces the vote share of incumbent parties by two percentage points, which is equivalent to 4% of …

[Air pollution may exacerbate covid-19].

OBJECTIVES: Gender has been shown to impact disease expression in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and Th17 cells play a key role in AS pathogenesis. To better understand what Th17-associated immune pathways are different between men and women, we compared the transcriptome of IL-17-enriched peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in male and female AS patients, with a particular focus on inflammatory cytokine genes. METHODS: PBMCs were collected from 10 female and 11 male AS patients at the Clinical Research Unit of MetroHealth Medical Center. IL-17-enriched PBMCs were isolated and stimulated

[Air pollution, cardiovascular risk and hypertension].

Air pollution is a worrying factor and has an impact on public health. Multiple studies relate exposure to air pollutants with an increase in cardiovascular events, cardiovascular mortality and mortality for all causes. A relationship has also been demonstrated between increased pollution and high blood pressure, as well as a higher prevalence of hypertension. Pollutants that play a more relevant role in this association are particulate matters, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide. The objective of this review is to understand the mechanisms involved in this increase and to find the most rece…

Air Pollution and Mortality in China.

Ambient air pollution has been an important environmental issue in most areas of China. This chapter summarized the mortality effects of short-term and long-term exposures to various air pollutants among Chinese population. The literature review identified sufficient information to support significant short-term mortality effects of various air pollutants from time series analyses and case-crossover studies, such as PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO2, and O3. On the other hand, though the literature review suggested a positive effect of long-term exposure to air pollution on mortality and lung cancer risk,…
