Mapping the core: chlamydia and gonorrhea infections in Calgary, Alberta.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the spatial patterning of the individuals with gonorrhea or chlamydia infection in the Calgary Health Region (CHR) to target prevention and control activities. METHODS: A Geographic Information System was used to map the prevalence rates of gonorrhea and chlamydia infection in the CHR to 2001 Census Tracts in the CHR. Data from the 2001 Canadian Census were used to describe the socioeconomic status (SES) of these areas. RESULTS: Low SES indicators correlated with each other (low median household income, lower education, single mothers) as did high SES indicators (marri

Clinical islet transplantation at the University of Alberta--the Edmonton experience.

While the field of islet transplantation has evolved over the past 30 years and exponential progress and increase in clinical activity has occurred during the past 5 years, it is clear that major challenges still remain, particularly in understanding why islet function seems to decay over time. High one-year rates of insulin independence, and high 5-year rates of partial islet function (with C-peptide secretion and protection from hypoglycemia) are now routine. Improved control of glycated HbA1c and reduced risk of recurrent hypoglycemia are benefits of islet transplantation irrespective of th

Anophthalmia and microphthalmia in the Alberta Congenital Anomalies Surveillance System.

BACKGROUND: A higher than expected rate of anophthalmia/microphthalmia (A/M) for 1999 was noted in both the Alberta Congenital Anomalies Surveillance System (ACASS) and the Canadian Congenital Anomalies Surveillance System (CCASS). Since this increase was at variance with the previous 19 years, we performed a review to determine whether the increase was true and, if so, the possible explanation. METHODS: We reviewed the records of the cases of A/M in the ACASS together with the accompanying attachments (e.g., consultant, autopsy and chromosome reports) for 1991-2001. In addition, we contacted…

The epidemiology of traumatic spinal cord injury in Alberta, Canada.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the incidence and pattern of traumatic spinal cord injury and cauda equina injury (SCI) in a geographically defined region of Canada. METHODS: The study period was April 1, 1997 to March 31, 2000. Data were gathered from three provincial sources: administrative data from the Alberta Ministry of Health and Wellness, records from the Alberta Trauma Registry, and death certificates from the Office of the Medical Examiner. RESULTS: From all three data sources, 450 cases of SCI were identified. Of these, 71 (15.8%) died prior to hospitalization. The annual incidence rate w…

Horse-related fatalities in the Province of Alberta, 1975-1990.

People use horses for work and recreational purposes on farms and ranches in Alberta, Canada. This retrospective descriptive review examines the records of all those people killed while around horses between 1975 and 1990. The intent is to ascertain features common to these injuries and to suggest prevention strategies. Records from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Alberta revealed that 38 people were involved in horse-related fatalities between 1975 and 1990 and that 22 died of head injuries. All 38 deaths were classified as accidental. Some of these might have been prevented, or i…

An outbreak of duck virus enteritis (duck plague) in Alberta.

Duck plague (Duck virus enteritis) was disgnosed in a resident population of Muscovy ducks (Cairina moschata) on a small game farm in Alberta. This disease has not been reported previously in Canada. Clinical signs consisted of cyanosis, depression and acute death. Necropsy of two Muscovy ducks revealed lesions typical of the disease. There were ulcerations with pseudomembranes in the small intestine, ulcerations with caseous plaques in the esophagus and eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies in the spleen. Clinical disease with mortality was reproduced in young ducklings injected with tis…

A serologic survey of pronghorns in Alberta and Saskatchewan, 1970-1972.

To determine the exposure of free-ranging pronghorns (Antilocapra americana Ord) to selected pathogens, serum samples were obtained from 33 live-trapped animals from southwestern Saskatchewan in 1970, and from 26 and 51 animals from southeastern Alberta, in 1971 and 1972, respectively. Antibodies were found to the agents of parainfluenza 3, bovine virus diarrhea, eastern and western encephalomyelitis, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis and the chlamydial group. No serologic reactors were found to the agents of bluetongue, epizootic hemorrhagic disease, brucellosis, or leptospirosis (4 serotypes…

Isolated Pulmonary Emergomycosis in an Immunocompetent Patient in Alberta, Canada.

Emergomyces canadensis pulmonary infection was incidentally diagnosed in an asymptomatic patient suspected to have metastatic osteosarcoma. Molecular diagnosis was imperative to fungal identification given overlapping histopathological features with histoplasmosis. This report documents a case of isolated pulmonary emergomycosis in an otherwise immunocompetent patient while discussing diagnostic and management pitfalls of this emerging and underdiagnosed infection.

Outbreak of measles in a non-immunizing population, Alberta 2013.

BACKGROUND: An outbreak of measles was declared in southern Alberta on October 18, 2013, after a case had been reported to the local public health unit in a non-immunized teenager with recent travel to the Netherlands. The teenager had had contact with a large number of unimmunized people while infectious; therefore, the risk of spread was high. The potential for an outbreak of measles in this area had been identified by the lead Medical Officer of Health for South Zone, and planning for an outbreak had begun in August 2013. METHODS: Several public health measures were implemented to control …

The prevalence of intestinal parasites in dogs and cats in Calgary, Alberta.

The prevalence of endoparasites was evaluated in 619 dogs and 153 cats in the Calgary, Alberta region. Both homed and shelter-sourced pets were evaluated, and prevalence was assessed in various age groups. The overall endoparasite prevalence was 16.5% in canine samples and 7.2% in feline samples. The most common intestinal parasites in dogs were Giardia (8.1%) and ascarids (4.2%). The most common feline endoparasite was ascarids (6.5%). This study will help veterinarians to better plan diagnostic and preventative strategies with regard to companion animal intestinal parasites.

Carbapenemase-producing hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae in Alberta, Canada, 2016-2024.

BACKGROUND: Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) can cause invasive community-acquired infections in healthy adults. HvKp is usually susceptible to most antibiotics; however, multi-drug resistance, including to carbapenems, is emerging. This is especially concerning due to the combination of disease severity and antibiotic resistance. Recent reports of the ST23 lineage of hvKp has raised alarms globally, making reporting of these cases significant. METHODS: Carbapenemase-producing K. pneumoniae (CP-Kp) in Alberta, Canada were screened for the presence of hypervirulence genes associated …

Post-Mastectomy Emergency Department Visits in Alberta: Understanding Patient Perspectives.

Same-day surgery for mastectomy increased in Alberta from 1.7% to 73% in 2022, after implementation of a perioperative pathway in 2016. However, rates of unplanned visits to the emergency department (ED) remained >20%. Previous research explored reasons for this using administrative data but lacked patient-level data. Our study aims to explore patient-reported factors influencing unplanned ED visits after mastectomy. A survey study was conducted of patients who underwent mastectomy in Alberta between July 2021 and June 2022. Patients were identified from the Canadian Institute of Health Inform…

Characterization of Swine Influenza A(H1N2) Variant, Alberta, Canada, 2020.

Influenza strains circulating among swine populations can cause outbreaks in humans. In October 2020, we detected a variant influenza A subtype H1N2 of swine origin in a person in Alberta, Canada. We initiated a public health, veterinary, and laboratory investigation to identify the source of the infection and determine whether it had spread. We identified the probable source as a local pig farm where a household contact of the index patient worked. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the isolate closely resembled strains found at that farm in 2017. Retrospective and prospective surveillance u…

Solar ultraviolet radiation exposure among outdoor workers in Alberta, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Outdoor workers are at risk of prolonged and high solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure, which is known to cause skin cancer. The objectives of this study were to characterize the UVR exposure levels of outdoor workers in Alberta, Canada, and to investigate what factors may contribute to their exposure. METHODS: This study collected objective solar UVR measurements from outdoor workers primarily in Alberta during the summer of 2019. Workers were recruited via the management or health and safety teams from building trade unions and employers. Calibrated, electronic UVR dosimet…
