OBJECTIVES: To identify the nature of the fragrance ingredients responsible for allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) from specific cosmetic products.
METHODS: Between 2000 and 2009, positive patch test reactions or positive usage tests with the patients' own cosmetic products, were recorded using a standardised form.

Chemical allergy describes the adverse health effects that may result when exposure to a chemical elicits an immune response. Allergy develops in two phases. In the first phase, exposure of an inherently susceptible subject results in stimulation of an immune response or immunological priming. PATIENTS/METHODS: From a database-based study with 14 998 patients patch tested with the European baseline series between 1985 and 2005, a group of 759 (5.1%) patients were polysensitized. Odds ratios were calculated to determine the relative contribution of each allergen to polysensitization.

Mixed grass pollen allergens were precipitated from crude grass extract by 90% saturation with ammonium sulfate. The precipitate was dissolved and polymerized with glutaraldehyde. In the current issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Sánchez-Martínez et al. demonstrate that oral and small-intestine small intestinal bacteria can modulate IgE-mediated anaphylaxis through metabolic degradation of immunodominant peanut allergens.
