Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder characterized by transient, non-scarring hair loss and preservation of the hair follicle. Hair loss can take many forms ranging from loss in well-defined patches to diffuse or total hair loss, which can affect all hair-bearing sites. Patchy alopecia areata affecting the scalp is the most common type. Alopecia areata affects nearly 2% of the general population at some point during their lifetime. Skin biopsies of affected skin show a lymphocytic infiltrate in and around the bulb or the lower part of the hair follicle in the anagen (hair growth) phase. A…

Alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is a common T-cell mediated autoimmune disease affecting hair and nails. It is a non-scarring form of alopecia, commonly patchy, but it may cover the whole scalp and even body hair. Appearing on genetically predisposed people, it evolves in variable and often unpredictable ways throughout life, in episode whose triggering causes remain unknown. Its psychological impact is often large. The therapeutic management takes into account the patient's request, after a simple explanation about the disease and its treatment. Although it is challenging, some significant i…

Alopecia areata (AA) is an organ specific autoimmune disease. Similar to other autoimmune diseases, its pathogenesis is believed to be an interaction of genetic, environmental and immune factors. Studies have shown that autoreactive lymphocytes affect anagen hair follicles leading to subsequent shedding of hairs and alopecia. Clinically, the disease is characterized by sudden nonscarring hair loss that usually involves the scalp, but may also affect the face and other body areas, and indeed the entire body hair. AA may appear for the first time at any age, affecting both children and adults, b…

Alopecia and other hair abnormalities occurring in patients with psoriasis were first recognized over four decades ago, yet psoriatic alopecia is not a well-known concept among clinicians. Alopecia may be directly related to the psoriasis itself, and can affect both the scalp and other parts of the body. On the scalp, psoriatic alopecia most commonly affects lesional skin, but may present as a generalized telogen effluvium. In most cases, there is regrowth of hair, but in rare cases it can cause scarring alopecia. Histological findings include features of psoriasis in the interfollicular epith…

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common form of alopecia, affecting up to 80% of men and 50% of women in the course of their life. AGA is caused by a progressive reduction in the diameter, length and pigmentation of the hair. Hair thinning results from the effects of the testosterone metabolite dehydrotestosterone (DHT) on androgen-sensitive hair follicles. In women, AGA produces diffuse thinning of the crown region with maintenance of the frontal hairline (Ludwig pattern AGA). In premenopausal women, AGA can be a sign of hyperandrogenism, together with hirsutism and acnes. Male pattern…

The epidemiology of alopecia areata as well as murine models of this disease and genome-wide association studies support the concept of alopecia areata as an autoimmune disease. In addition, the genome-wide association studies have led to the identification of new potential therapeutic targets such as CTLA4; these results have already led to the initiation of clinical studies, for example, with abatacept. Currently topical and intralesional corticosteroids as well as immunotherapy with diphenylcyclopropenone are most common therapeutic approaches.

Alopecia aerata (AA) is an autoimmune disease that presents as well defined patches of nonscarring hair loss with no overt epidermal changes. The life-time risk of AA in the general population is approximately 1.7%. As many as 60% of patients with AA have disease onset before 20 years of age. AA most commonly manifests as sudden loss of hair in well demarcated, localized area in the scalp. The hair loss is usually limited to a single patch. The lesion is usually round or oval. "Exclamation point hairs" are frequently seen at the periphery of the lesion. Because of the high rate of spontaneous …

AIM: It has been seen that hair loss entails a perceived loss of personal attractiveness combined with the fear of growing old, and it presents negative repercussions on social life associated with a frequent reduction in mood tone. It has also been observed that the quality of life worsens in patients suffering from this problem. Other studies cast doubt on a cause-effect link of this nature, suggesting the possibility that hair loss might be secondary to a psychological condition of personal unease. Seen in this light, alopecia should be classified as a fully fledged psychosomatic disease. T…

Alopecia areata (AA) is a nonscarring, autoimmune, inflammatory, hair loss on the scalp, and/or body. Etiology and pathogenesis are still unknown. The most common site affected is the scalp. Histopathology is characterized by an increased number of the catagen and telogen follicles, the presence of inflammatory lymphocytic infiltrate in the peribulbar region ("swarm of bees"). Corticosteroids are the most popular drugs for the treatment of this disease. Etiologic and pathogenic mechanisms, as well as other current treatments available will be discussed in this article.

Alopecia areata is a frequent cause of hair loss. The origin of disease is not fully understood. However there are indications for a T-cell mediated autoimmune process. Genetic, immunologic and psychologic factors are important for the outbreak of disease. Most patients show localized patches of acute hair loss, where regrowth is observed spontaneously or with simple topical treatment within few months. In up to 15% of patients severe forms of disease can develop with total scalp (alopecia totalis) or scalp and body hair loss (alopecia universalis). There are only few known risk factors for de…

Alopecia areata is a frequent and physiologically compelling form of hair loss. It is most common in children and young adults, but can affect people of any age. Although it is usually limited to patches on the scalp, it may involve the entire scalp and other hair-bearing regions of the body. It may be associated with autoimmune disorders, especially of the thyroid. Its effective treatment often poses a difficult challenge.
