[Deep amblyopia and postural prisms].

Physiopathology of amblyopia and adaptative mechanisms of postural system should be considered among strabismic amblyopia with excentric fixation. Such patients have a "Body Image" of postural dissymetry which ocular torticollis is only caricatural. A symptomatical therapy, as modification of postural tonus regulation, is justified by the hypothesis that excentration of the fixation should be compare to postural dysregulation. This paper report four cases of amblyopia (children and adults) already treated by classical methods without results who obtained ameliorations by a combined ophthalmolo…

Convergent strabismic amblyopia in cats.

Experiments were carried out to determine the effects of different types of experimental strabismus on the acuities of retinal ganglion cells. Six kittens were raised from twenty-one days of age with an esotropia surgically induced by myectomy of the lateral rectus muscle and a large portion of the superior oblique muscle. The results are compared with those, previously reported, from five other cats also made esotropic, but by tenotomy of the lateral rectus. All animals tested behaviourally were amblyopic in the strabismic eye. For square wave gratings, the visual acuities were 1.0 to 2.5 cyc

Afferent pupillary defects in amblyopia.

We detected mild afferent pupillary defects with the "swinging flashlight" test in 4 out of 45 amblyopic patients. Our study was designed to … defects as evidence for a physiological disturbance at the retinal level in at least some cases of amblyopia. Our findings suggest that the extent of retinal involvement in amblyopic eyes is independent of reduction in acuity, to which primary cortical abnormalities may contribute as well.

Unilateral congenital ptosis and amblyopia.

Amblyopia was detected in 15 of 55 children with unilateral congenital ptosis. Anisometropia was the main cause of the amblyopia in 10 cases, and strabismus alone was the cause in 2 cases. In three cases amblyopia developed after ptosis surgery.

Effects of strabismic amblyopia and strabismus without amblyopia on visuomotor behavior, I: saccadic eye movements.

PURPOSE: It has previously been shown that anisometropic amblyopia affects the programming and execution of saccades. The aim of the current study was to investigate the impact of strabismic amblyopia on saccade performance. METHODS: Fourteen adults with strabismic amblyopia, 13 adults with strabismus without amblyopia, and 14 visually normal adults performed saccades and reach-to-touch movements to targets presented at ± 5° and ± 10° eccentricity during binocular and monocular viewing. Latency, amplitude, and peak velocity of primary and secondary saccades were measured. RESULTS: In contras…

Evaluation of the Amblyopia tracker app.

PURPOSE: The Amblyopia tracker app has been developed to be a tool for parents to monitor changes in vision at home during amblyopia treatment. The aims of this study were to evaluate the feasibility and repeatability of parents testing their children at home and to compare home test results to an assessment in clinic by an orthoptist. METHODS: Children (age < 18 years) with amblyopia (interocular acuity difference of ≥ 0.2logMAR) were recruited. Parents were asked to test their child with the app three times during a two week period followed by an online questionnaire about the usability. Pa…

Global processing in amblyopia: a review.

Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder of the visual system that is associated with disrupted binocular vision during early childhood. There is evidence that the effects of amblyopia extend beyond the primary visual cortex to regions of the dorsal and ventral extra-striate visual cortex involved in visual integration. Here, we review the current literature on global processing deficits in observers with either strabismic, anisometropic, or deprivation amblyopia. A range of global processing tasks have been used to investigate the extent of the cortical deficit in amblyopia including: globa…

The relationship between anisometropia and amblyopia.

This review aims to disentangle cause and effect in the relationship between anisometropia and amblyopia. Specifically, we examine the literature for evidence to support different possible developmental sequences that could ultimately lead to the presentation of both conditions. The prevalence of anisometropia is around 20% for an inter-ocular difference of 0.5D or greater in spherical equivalent refraction, falling to 2-3%, for an inter-ocular difference of 3D or above. Anisometropia prevalence is relatively high in the weeks following birth, in the teenage years coinciding with the onset of …

The measurement and treatment of suppression in amblyopia.

Amblyopia, a developmental disorder of the visual cortex, is one of the leading causes of visual dysfunction in the working age population. Current estimates put the prevalence of amblyopia at approximately 1-3%(1-3), the majority of cases being monocular(2). Amblyopia is most frequently caused by ocular misalignment (strabismus), blur induced by unequal refractive error (anisometropia), and in some cases by form deprivation. Although amblyopia is initially caused by abnormal visual input in infancy, once established, the visual deficit often remains when normal visual input has been restored …

The pattern of visual deficits in amblyopia.

Amblyopia is usually defined as a deficit in optotype (Snellen) acuity with no detectable organic cause. We asked whether this visual abnormality is completely characterized by the deficit in optotype acuity, or whether it has distinct forms that are determined by the conditions associated with the acuity loss, such as strabismus or anisometropia. To decide this issue, we measured optotype acuity, Vernier acuity, grating acuity, contrast sensitivity, and binocular function in 427 adults with amblyopia or with risk factors for amblyopia and in a comparison group of 68 normal observers. Optotype…

Outcome of occlusion treatment for amblyopia.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine the level of visual acuity following occlusion treatment for strabismic and anisometropic amblyopia and to analyze the factors that influence the outcome. METHODS: In this observational study, we examined the medical records of 246 patients discharged between April 1991 and March 1996, including those who failed to complete treatment. Two groups were identified: Group 1 esotropia (n = 151); and Group 2 anisometropic amblyopia with or without microtropia (n = 79). Factors influencing outcome of treatment were analyzed, success being define…

[Refractive error and amblyopia in children].

The refractive status of 3,099 children was analyzed. The result showed that the incidence and degree of hyperopia decreased gradually and those of myopia increased along with the growing up of children in ametropia. In binocular refractive amblyopia, high and medium hyperopia and myopia in severe and medium amblyopia were significantly more than those in mild amblyopia. In monocular refractive amblyopia, high and medium hyperopia and high myopia in the amblyopic eyes were more than those in the nonamblyopic eyes. The refractive status of binocular esotropic amblyopia had no significant differ…

Amblyopia and strabismus in congenital ptosis.

Seventeen per cent of 216 cases of simple congenital ptosis developed amblyopia and 19% had a squint. Of those patients with amblyopia, 14% had amblyopia attributable to stimulus deprivation, 21% had anisometropic amblyopia and 51% had strabismic amblyopia. Early refraction, orthoptic assessment and treatment and, where the pupillary axis is occluded, surgery to prevent stimulus deprivation amblyopia are recommended.

Amblyopia and physical activity in adolescents.

Introduction: Physical activity in adolescence plays an important role in reducing the lifetime risk of chronic disease. Recent studies have shown that individuals with amblyopia may have difficulties with coordinating balance and may be at greater risk of developing fine motor impairments. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is an association between the presence of amblyopia and physical activity (PA) in adolescents. Methods: Adolescent patients aged 12-18 years with a history of childhood amblyopia were age- and gender-matched to control patients with no other ocular patholo…
