A study of stump growth in children with below-knee amputations.

The growth of the stump has been studied in eighteen children with below-knee amputations. Measurements were available shortly after operation and later at skeletal maturity. It was found that all patients achieved less than expected growth and that the reduction was greater in those patients who had had amputation for congenital deformity.

A Novel Utility of Bilobed Flap for Amputation Stump Coverage.

Preparing a good amputation stump with a well-padded, stable, sensate, and painless soft tissue coverage is of utmost importance to achieve early ambulation and return the patient to the daily activity level. When the primary closure is impossible or fails to achieve a good closure, secondary closure must be considered. To date, no literature reported the use of bilobed flaps for stump defect closure. We aimed to utilize this technically easy procedure for better management of defect closure on amputated limb stumps that often cause complex clinical problems. This is a retrospective observatio

[The endo-exo prosthesis for patients with a problematic amputation stump].

Following lower limb amputation, quality of life is highly related to the ability to use a prosthetic limb. The conventional way to attach a prosthetic limb to the body is with a socket. Many patients experience serious discomfort wearing a conventional prosthesis because of pain, instability during walking, pressure sores, bad smell or skin irritation. In addition, sitting is uncomfortable and pelvic and lower back pain due to unstable gait is often seen in these patients. The main disadvantage of the current prosthesis is the attachment of a rigid prosthesis socket to a soft and variable bod

A case of pyoderma gangrenosum on the stump of an amputated right leg.

We present here a case of pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) on the stump of an amputated leg. The patient was a 69-year-old woman who had both of her legs amputated due to acute arterial occlusion. An ulcer first appeared nine years later, after which point it continued to fluctuate in size. Complications included regional blood flow disorder at the amputated stump, diabetes, and secondary infection. Despite various therapies, the ulcer exacerbated, and hypoproteinemia, increased CRP, and fever were confirmed. The patient was diagnosed as having PG based on her clinical symptoms and because the ulcer

Kaposi-like acroangiodermatitis in an above-knee amputation stump.

The clinical, histological and immunohistological features of a Kaposi-like acroangiodermatitis in an above-knee amputation stump are reported. There was no evidence for an underlying arteriovenous malformation and the irregular purple-blue skin lesions resulted from chronic circulatory disturbance of the distal stump caused by a poorly fitting suction-type prosthesis.

The postoperative environment of the amputation stump. Postoperative wound dressing after through-knee amputation.

This paper reviews different types of treatment of the amputation stump. Following an examination of the historical development there are sections on bandaging, semi-rigid dressings, rigid cast dressing and controlled environment treatment. The merits and demerits of each type of treatment are discussed.

Hidradenitis Suppurativa or Hidradenitis Suppurativa-Like Lesions Located on Amputation Stumps? Description of 2 Cases.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic and recurrent inflammatory skin disorder affecting mainly the areas rich in apocrine sweat glands, such as the axillae, groins and buttocks. The role of mechanical pressure and friction due to clothing in the pathogenesis of HS lesions has been previously stressed. Here, we report 2 middle-aged men who presented with HS lesions/HS-like lesions on their amputation stump and review 2 additional cases from the literature. Management was challenging as 2 patients needed tumor necrosis αinhibitor while deroofing/surgery was the option for the 2 others. The

"Spare part" forearm free flaps harvested from the amputated limb for coverage of amputation stumps.

The use of "spare part" flaps from a non-replantable limb to cover amputation stumps in the upper extremity preserves limb length, provides durable coverage and sensation and will avoid additional donor site morbidity. We have studied the blood supply of the forearm based on the radial artery. The potential for harvesting different tissues is confirmed. In five clinical cases reliable primary soft tissue reconstruction was achieved, even in the presence of trauma.

Cold Susceptibility of Digit Stumps Resulting from Amputation After Freezing Cold Injury in Elite Alpinists.

UNLABELLED: Gorjanc, Jurij, Shawnda A. Morrison, Rok Blagus, and Igor B. Mekjavic. Cold susceptibility of digit stumps resulting from amputation after freezing cold injury in elite alpinists. High Alt Med Biol. 19:185-192, 2018. AIM: The aim of the study was to assess whether previous freezing cold injury in fingers and/or toes might predispose alpinists to greater risk of further freezing cold injury, primarily due to a greater vasoconstrictor response to cold, resulting in a lower perfusion, reflected in lower skin temperature. METHODS: Ten elite alpinists (N = 10; 8 male and 2 female) wit

Lengthening the Transfemoral Amputation Stump Using Vascularized Flap From Amputated Limb: A Case Report.

CASE: A 10-year-old male patient was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and initially underwent prosthetic reconstruction following an extra-articular resection. Local recurrence with extensive neurovascular invasion necessitated the decision to perform a transfemoral amputation. To maximize functional outcome through lengthening the stump, a tibial osseocutaneous vascularized flap from the amputated limb was integrated into amputation stump, utilizing plate-and-screw fixation. At the final follow-up, the patient was independently ambulatory using a custom-made prosthesis. CONCLUSION: We present a p

Revision of below-knee amputation stumps to a higher level in patients with peripheral vascular disease.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical and anatomical factors associated with failure of below-knee amputation (BKA) resulting in revision to a higher level amputation, with the aim of identifying predictors of stump healing and reducing the need for reoperation. METHODS: This retrospective single-center study included all patients who underwent a BKA between April 2014 and October 2021 for peripheral vascular disease excluding other etiologies, such as burns, trauma, or malignancy. Patients were stratified into two groups based on whether revision surgery was required. Demographic characteristics,

[Use of skin expansion in resurfacing defective amputation stumps of the lower limbs. 6 case reports].

Better procedures and materials have enabled us to improve the results of skin expansion under knee level and extend its indications. We have used such procedures to cover defective amputation stumps in the lower extremity. When the local conditions are suitable, skin expansion permits the use of healthy skin from the lateral sides of the stump to provide coverage for the ulcerated areas, thus fulfilling the main goals which are to keep the bone shaft as long as possible and cover the stump with sensitive skin, so that a prosthesis can be fitted. In two cases, we also performed skin expansion …
