[Johann Friedrich Meckel, Jr. as founder of scientific teratology].

n the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his death, the scientific work of the famous German anatomist Johann Friedrich Meckel (1781 to 1833) in Halle is appreciated. The Younger Meckel is counted to the most outstanding figures in the history of anatomy and medicine in the first third of 19th century. According to his founded knowledges in the normal, comparative, and pathologic anatomy and embryology he was able to give a scientific argument of malformations first of all in the history of medicine and biology. The edition of Meckel's Handbook of Pathologic Anatomy (in German language; 1st

Clitoral Anatomy in the Feminist Literature: Vagina obscura: An anatomical voyage (2020) and Clitoral Conventions and Transgressions: Graphical representations in anatomy texts, c1900-1991 (1995).

O'Connell et al. proposed that the vestibular bulbs be renamed the "clitoral bulbs" because of their consistent relationship to the clitoris and inconsistent relationship to the vestibule. Normally such proposed esoteric changes in anatomical nomenclature would get little notice by anatomists, yet alone the general public; however, many subsequent articles and books placed this change in the context of centuries of male anatomists and physicians downplaying female sexual anatomy and sexuality. Most prominent is a 2022 book by Rachel Gross, Vagina Obscura: An Anatomical Voyage. Here we review t…

A historical vignette. Turbulence around the otoliths. Sappey's hostility and Breschet's defence.

Nowadays, the animosity between medical scholars is seldom apparent. However, during the XIXth century it was not necessarily so. We find an example of this in Sappey's hostility against his colleague anatomist Gilbert Breschet. It concerned the discovery of the otoliths of the inner ear that Breschet attributed to himself. We present here Breschet's defence.

"Flexures and bends of the large intestine: Current terminology and a suggestion to simplify it".

There are a number of inconsistencies in the description of the bends of the colon down to the anus. This is historically based on the fact that anatomists saw the colon in its position in the abdominal cavity down to the pelvis and thus from the "outside" and also described it in this way. This view is still useful in clinical practice today (e.g. for the abdominal surgeons). For the greater part of clinicians, however, the view has shifted due to modern endoscopy. This allows examiners to see the terminal section of the intestine and the colon from the "inside". To accommodate both "ways of …

[Breschet's sinus].

The author evokes the story of Brechet's sinus that is the sphenoidal sinus. Gilbert Brechet (1784-1845) was an eminent anatomist and professor in Paris. He took over from Jean Cruveilhier at the head of the anatomy laboratory of Paris University. This sinus is still important nowadays because of its role in some cranioclasts and in its ability of drainage and hormones circulation.

[Gastric precancerous conditions].

The Authors examine the anatomopathological and clinical features of the main gastric precancerouses and explain the diagnostic therapeutic protocols used. The diagnostic and therapeutic strategy can not leave a strict interdisciplinary collaboration out of consideration between radiologist, endoscopist, anatomist, gastroenterologist and surgeon. They conclude, in fact, affirming that the mentioned collaboration represents the one possibility for improving the results at distance of this neoplasia.

Mona Lisa syndrome: solving the enigma of the Gioconda smile.

The Mona Lisa smile is presented as a possible example of facial muscle contracture that develops after Bell's palsy when the facial nerve has undergone partial wallerian degeneration and has regenerated. The accompanying synkinesis would explain many of the known facts surrounding the painting and is a classic example of Leonardo da Vinci as the compulsive anatomist who combined art and science.

Ethical Perspectives on Body Donation Following Physician-Assisted Death.

The increasing availability of physician-assisted death (PAD) has opened up a novel means of making donated bodies available for anatomical dissection. This practice has come to the fore in Canada, but is unlikely to be confined to that country as legislation changes in other countries. The ethical considerations raised by this development are placed within the framework of the ethical guidelines on body donation promulgated by the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists. The discussion centers on understanding the ethical dimensions of moral complicity, and whether it is accept…

From classroom to clinic: Evaluating the educational utility of two Thiel embalming methods.

Over three decades since its introduction, the Thiel embalming method remains a widely used and praised technique in anatomical education and clinical training. This study compared for the first time the Thiel original protocol (TO) and a Modified version (TM) across user groups-undergraduate medical students, student demonstrators in anatomy, postgraduate trainees, and expert anatomists-to evaluate tissue quality and educational suitability. A total of 520 participants assessed both methods based on tissue preservation, color, pliability, and achievement of learning objectives. Undergraduate …

A Core Head, Neck, and Neuroanatomy Syllabus for Physical Therapy Student Education.

Head, neck, and neuroanatomy are essential components of physical therapy education due to their broad clinical applications. Detailed syllabi exist for medical students, yet none have been developed for physical therapy. This study aimed to produce an International Federation of Associations of Anatomists core head, neck, and neuroanatomy syllabus specifically for physical therapy students. A Delphi panel of 45 anatomists and clinicians from 18 countries reviewed 978 head, neck, and neuroanatomy items across five sections: general nervous system; bones and muscles of the head and neck; nasal …

Gabriele Fallopio (1523-1562) and his contributions to the development of medicine and anatomy.

INTRODUCTION: Gabriele Fallopio was one of the greatest anatomists of the sixteenth century. He discovered and named numerous parts of the human body. His name survives to this day as it is associated with several anatomical structures including the Fallopian canal, Fallopian hiatus, Fallopian valve, Fallopian muscle, and the Fallopian tube. CONCLUSIONS: Our current knowledge of human anatomy is based on giants such as Fallopio. His contributions to neuroanatomy laid the foundations for the development of this discipline.

Changes of anatomical nomenclature must be deliberate: The female external genitalia.

Anatomical terminology is a cornerstone of medical terminology and since 1895 there has been a norm (nomenclature), regularly revised, extended, and updated. The latest official version issued by the Federative International Program on Anatomical Terminology was approved by the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists in 1998 as Terminologia Anatomica (TA). Second edition of the TA (TA2) has now been prepared for approval. Each change must be meticulously discussed and considered as it affects and influences not only anatomists but also all clinicians, physicians, scientists, tea…

Double right coronary artery: a plea for a standardized nomenclature.

BACKGROUND: Double coronary artery is a rare anomaly with just a few cases reported in the literature. This anomaly started being reported recently with the wide use of coronary angiography. Before the advent of advanced imaging and catheterization facilities most of the available data came from the work of anatomists. Two patients were recently operated in our department. In the first patient the preoperative coronary angiography showed two right coronary arteries. In the second patient a double ostium of the right coronary artery was encountered intraoperatively. We wanted to know the incide…

History of the current understanding and management of tethered spinal cord.

An understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of tethered cord syndrome (TCS) and modern management strategies have only developed within the past few decades. Current understanding of this entity first began with the understanding and management of spina bifida; this later led to the gradual recognition of spina bifida occulta and the symptoms associated with tethering of the filum terminale. In the 17th century, Dutch anatomists provided the first descriptions and initiated surgical management efforts for spina bifida. In the 19th century, the term "spina bifida occulta" was coined and …
