Frequency of supernumerary teeth in a dolichocephalic canine breed, the greyhound.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of supernumerary teeth in Greyhounds. ANIMALS: 55 Greyhounds obtained anonymously from a variety of breeders. PROCEDURE: Greyhounds were examined for the presence of supernumerary teeth. RESULTS: Supernumerary teeth were present in 20 of 55 (36.4%) Greyhounds surveyed. CONCLUSIONS: Location of supernumerary teeth, usually first premolars, is not random, but favors occurrence in the upper arcade. Occurrence of supernumerary teeth did not favor the left or right side. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Because an increasing number of veterinary anatomy textbooks use G

Three-Dimensional Reconstruction of the Equine Palmar Metacarpal Region Using E12 Plastinated Sections.

Digital technologies have improved the visualization of anatomical structures for veterinary education and clinical practice. In this study, a detailed three-dimensional anatomical model of the equine palmar metacarpal region was generated using E12-based epoxy sheet plastination combined with digital reconstruction in Amira® V5.6 software. Serial cross-sections of the metacarpal region provided high-resolution visualization of bones, tendons, ligaments, nerves, vessels, fasciae, and synovial structures, with minimal shrinkage or deformation, ensuring improved anatomical accuracy. These sectio

Intraoperative problems associated with intervertebral disc disease.

Intervertebral disc disease in the dog is a common problem in veterinary medicine. The clinician must understand the pathophysiology of disc extrusions so the owner can be informed properly when medical versus surgical treatment is indicated. Intervertebral disc surgery requires the same preoperative considerations as any other surgery would: knowledge of regional anatomy, proper equipment, and good surgical techniques and tissue handling. The spinal cord is an unforgiving structure, forcing the surgeon to understand and to avoid intraoperative complications. Some complications are inevitable.

3D Imaging of the Comparative Anatomical Structure of the Ossa Cranii in Some Ruminants.

Three-dimensional comparative descriptions of the ossa cranii across representatives of the Camelidae, Giraffidae, and Bovidae remain limited despite their relevance to comparative veterinary anatomy and clinical practice. Given the distinct structural variations and functional adaptations of these families, a descriptive comparison of ossa cranii morphology is needed to advance anatomical knowledge and establish species-specific reference data. This study compared the principal ossa cranii of camel, giraffe, cattle, sheep, and goat to identify conserved anatomical features and species-specifi

Anatomy and bronchoscopy of the porcine lung. A model for translational respiratory medicine.

The porcine model has contributed significantly to biomedical research over many decades. The similar size and anatomy of pig and human organs make this model particularly beneficial for translational research in areas such as medical device development, therapeutics and xenotransplantation. In recent years, a major limitation with the porcine model was overcome with the successful generation of gene-targeted pigs and the publication of the pig genome. As a result, the role of this model is likely to become even more important. For the respiratory medicine field, the similarities between pig a

Development and Use of an Interactive Computerized Dog Model to Evaluate Cranial Nerve Knowledge in Veterinary Students.

In veterinary medicine, the cognitive skills necessary to interpret neurological disorders from text-based case descriptions may not translate into the diagnostic capabilities required for clinical neurological patients. As live animals exhibiting certain specific neurological disorders are infrequent during a student's exposure to clinics, students may graduate without the experience necessary to make an accurate diagnosis in the field. To address this, we have developed a computerized simulated dog head that can exhibit cranial nerve dysfunctions and respond to specific testing procedures in

Veterinary and technical optimization of the fetal sheep model of congenital diaphragmatic hernia: implications for translational pediatric surgery.

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a life-threatening developmental anomaly where abdominal organs herniate into the thoracic cavity, impairing fetal lung growth and subsequent postnatal lung function. Despite advances in treatment, the morbidity and mortality of CDH remain significant. Currently, the most well-established fetal intervention is fetoscopic endoluminal tracheal occlusion (FETO), which promotes lung expansion and development by temporarily blocking the egress of lung fluid. However, treatment outcomes remain variable, which underscores the need for robust animal models to i

Eisenmenger ventricular septal defect in a Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti).

The Eisenmenger ventricular septal defect is an uncommon type of ventricular septal defect characterised in humans by a traditionally perimembranous ventricular septal defect, anterior deviation (cranioventral deviation in small animal patients) of the muscular outlet septum causing malalignment relative to the remainder of the muscular septum, and overriding of the aortic valve. This anomaly is reported infrequently in human patients and was identified in a 45-day-old Humboldt Penguin, Spheniscus humboldti, with signs of poor growth and a cardiac murmur. This case report describes the finding

Semi-Automated Segmentation on Computed Tomography Datasets for Three-Dimensional Reconstruction and Volumetric Analysis of the Paranasal Sinuses in Alpacas (Vicugna pacos) and Their Anatomical Variations.

Understanding the anatomy of alpaca (Vicugna pacos) paranasal sinuses is essential for accurate interpretation of diagnostic imaging and surgical planning, especially given the species' susceptibility to dental disease and associated sinusitis. However, detailed anatomical and volumetric data on alpaca sinuses remain limited. This study aimed to characterise the volumetric properties and anatomical composition of the paranasal sinuses in alpacas using semi-automated segmentation of computed tomography datasets, with the goal of supporting clinical practice in veterinary medicine. Seven adult a

Thoracic cavity of the Shirazi cats: New insights using computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Our study provided a comprehensive characterization of the thorax of Shirazi cats by comparing the relevant soft and bone windows of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with cross, sagittal and coronal sectional anatomy. We outlined the mediastinum and its anatomic relationships with the trachea, oesophagus, lungs, heart, cranial and caudal vena cavae, and other thoracic structures using the data series gathered from adult normal Shirazi cats. The cranial mediastinum extended from the thoracic inlet to the 4th intercostal space, the middle mediastinum extended from th

Preliminary study on the use of ultrasonic transmission imaging to evaluate the hip joint in the immature dog.

Real-time ultrasonic transmission imaging presents an orthographic image of anatomy similar to that obtained with X-ray fluoroscopy. Transmission imaging allows visualization of the dynamic interaction of muscle, cartilage, bone, tendon and joints during selective palpation and movement. The hip joints of deceased dogs, 7-8 weeks of age, were sonographically evaluated at various levels of dissection and correlated with anatomic features. Wherever possible correlation was made qualitatively with radiographs of the pelvis and coxofemoral joints. Although some features of the hip could be imaged,

Covariation of Skull and Brain Morphology in Domestic Dogs.

Despite their distinct embryonic origins, the skull and brain are highly integrated. Understanding the covariation between the skull and brain can shed light on anatomical, cognitive, and behavioral traits in extant and extinct species. Domestic dogs offer a unique opportunity to investigate skull-brain covariation due to their diverse skull morphologies and neural anatomy. To assess this question, we examined T2-weighted MRI studies of 62 dogs from 33 breeds, plus an additional 17 dogs of mixed or unknown breeds. Scans were opportunistically collected from a veterinary teaching hospital of do

Bicarotid Trunk in the Domestic Cat.

The origin of the pair of common carotid arteries in the cat is inadequately described, and there are conflicting accounts in English veterinary anatomy textbooks published in the USA. We found one-quarter of 40 adult domestic cats dissected had a bicarotid trunk (5 female, 5 male). When present, the bicarotid trunk arose from the brachiocephalic trunk approximately midway between the expected origins of the more frequently independently arising left and right common carotid arteries, and on average, it was 5.6 mm in length. Our findings make the incidence, topographical and measurement inform

The Bony Nasal Cavity and Paranasal Sinuses of Big Felids and Domestic Cat: A Study Using Anatomical Techniques, Computed Tomographic Images Reconstructed in Maximum-Intensity Projection, Volume Rendering and 3D Printing Models.

This study aims to develop three-dimensional printing models of the bony nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses of big and domestic cats using reconstructed computed tomographic images. This work included an exhaustive study of the osseous nasal anatomy of the domestic cat carried out through dissections, bone trepanations and sectional anatomy. With the use of OsiriX viewer, the DICOM images were postprocessed to obtaining maximum-intensity projection and volume-rendering reconstructions, which allowed for the visualization of the nasal cavity structures and the paranasal sinuses, providing an im

A Cadaveric Study Using Computed Tomography for Measuring the Ocular Bulb and Scleral Skeleton of the Atlantic Puffin (Aves, Alcidae, Fratercula arctica).

Imaging diagnosis plays a fundamental role in avian medicine. However, there are few publications regarding its use in ophthalmology. Seabirds, in particular, present a peculiar ecology since their lives take place in very diverse environments: the aquatic, the terrestrial, and the aerial. This fact implies a series of adaptations at a visual level that are necessary for adequate interaction with the environment. Therefore, knowledge of eye particularities is of great importance for the scientific community since it allows us to deepen our understanding of the ocular anatomy and biology of the

Anatomical Validation and Technical Feasibility of Biportal Endoscopic Spinal Surgery Including Technical Notes in a Cadaveric Canine Thoracic Intervertebral Disc Disease Model.

Biportal endoscopic spinal surgery (BESS) is a minimally invasive technique that is widely used in human spinal procedures; however, its standardized methodology and anatomical adaptation for veterinary applications have not yet been established. This study aimed to develop a reproducible experimental framework for performing BESS in dogs and evaluate its technical feasibility. A thoracic intervertebral disc disease model was created by injecting a fluorescently dyed artificial disc material containing methylene blue into the T12-13 intervertebral space of 13 medium-sized canine cadavers. Use of Examination Wrappers to Direct Student Self-Assessment of Examination Preparation: A Pilot Study.

Metacognition is the act of thinking about one's own thought processes. There are long-term gains in learning among students who are trained to understand how the brain works and how they can control their own learning. Wrappers are short questionnaires provided at or near the time of completion of a lecture, assignment, or assessment to coach the student in thinking through the steps of metacognition (planning, monitoring, and adapting). As students completed the second and third of four examinations in a first-year veterinary anatomy course, they were invited to fill out an examination wrapp
