Assessment of the genetic relationship between Dictyocaulus species from Bos taurus and Cervus elaphus using complete mitochondrial genomic datasets.

BACKGROUND: Dictyocaulus species are strongylid nematodes of major veterinary significance in ruminants, such as cattle and cervids, and cau … d to the exclusion of selected members of the superfamilies Metastrongyloidea, Trichostrongyloidea, Ancylostomatoidea and Strongyloidea. CONCLUSIONS: Consistent with previous findings for nuclear ribosomal DNA sequence data, the present analyses indicate that Dictyocaulus sp. cf. eckerti (red deer) and D. viviparus are separate species. Barcodes in the two mt geno …

Hookworm genomics: dusk or dawn?

Hookworms are parasites, closely related to the model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, that are a major economic and health burden worldwide. Primarily three hookworm species (Necator americanus, Ancylostoma duodenale, and Ancylostoma ceylanicum) infect humans. Another 100 hookworm species from 19 genera infect primates, ruminants, and carnivores. Genetic data exist for only seven of these species. Genome sequences are available from only four of these species in two genera, leaving 96 others (particularly those parasitizing wildlife) without any genomic data. The most recent hookworm genomes

Improved molecular diagnostic tools for human hookworms.

Blood-feeding hookworms are parasitic roundworms (i.e., nematodes) of major socioeconomic importance, affecting millions of people worldwide. Despite their impact on human health, little attention has been paid to improving practical methods of diagnosis. The genetic characterization of hookworms and specific diagnosis of their infections are central to elucidating the ecology and epidemiology of these parasites as well as the control of the disease they cause. Traditional coprodiagnostic methods have major limitations. This article summarizes progress in the development of molecular-analytica

What's Eating You? Hookworm and Cutaneous Larva Migrans.

Hookworm infection represents a major global disease burden, in terms of both morbidity and economic impact, and there has been a resurgence of hookworms in developed nations where these parasites were once thought to be eradicated. Hookworms can infest humans or other mammals as their primary hosts depending on the species. The 2 most common species that seek human hosts-Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale-enter the body through the epidermis, and hookworm infection may manifest as a pruritic and papular inflammatory reaction know as ground itch. Once they penetrate blood vessels, th

Arthrostoma leucurus sp. n. (Nematoda: Ancylostomatidae), A New Hookworm Species Isolated from Asian Badger in China.

PURPOSE: To date, ten validated Arthrostoma species were reported. Here, a new hookworm species was found from Asian badger (Meles leucurus). METHODS: Nineteen hookworms (9 males and 10 females) were collected from the small intestine of two Asian badgers in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwestern China. The hookworms were morphologically examined according to key taxonomic characters, such as anterior extremity direction, structures of oral opening (cutting plates or teeth), vulva location, buccal capsule anatomy (integrated or formed by articulating plates), the length of spicule and

[Role of alternative activation of macrophages in hookworm therapy for inflammatory diseases: a review].

As a type of highly plastic innate immune cells, macrophages may be differentiated into M1 and M2 macrophages upon different stimuli, and M2 macrophages are involved in immune regulation, tissue remodeling and regeneration, and wound healing. Previous epidemiological studies have shown a significant negative correlation between the prevalence of helminth infections and the incidence of inflammatory diseases, such as allergy and autoimmune diseases. As a common type of intestinal helminths, hookworm infection may trigger high levels of type II host immune responses, with alternative activation

Global distribution of human hookworm species and differences in their morbidity effects: a systematic review.

The global distribution and morbidity effects for each specific hookworm species is unknown, which prevents implementation of the optimum intervention for local hookworm control. We did two systematic reviews of studies on the proportion of hookworm isolates of each species and genus by region of the world and associations between hookworm species-specific infections and morbidity outcomes, particularly severe anaemia. Necator americanus and Ancylostoma spp were present in all regions of the world, although at different ratios. No clear evidence was found for the differential morbidity effects
