The expression of lactoferrin, a non-specific antimicrobial defence, in the canine uterus during the normal estrous cycle and in bitches with pyometra was examined. An 11-year-old, 24-kg, intact female Siberian husky dog in anestrus had a 2-month history of polyuria and polydipsia. The dog had signs of mineralocorticoid excess such as hypertension and hypokalemia refractory to potassium supplementation. Abdominal ultrasound revealed an irregular mass in the left adrenal gland. The ACTH stimulation test for aldosterone concentration did not reveal hyperaldosteronism. Unilateral adrenalectomy was performed and histopathology identified adrenal cortical carcinoma. All clinical signs of mineralocorticoid excess ceased after surgery.

Noradrenaline (NA) or dopamine (DA) were infused into the 3rd cerebral ventricle of the ewes in the stage of late anestrus and the release of LH and the induction of ovulation (IO) were followed. After the infusion of NA the release of LH and IO in the ewes with so-called "activated" ovaries was observed, while no reaction was found in the ewes with the "inactive" ovaries. The infusion of DA was without any effect either in the ewes with "activated" or with "inactive" ovaries.

The goal of this review is to provide evidence supporting the physiologic basis for the use of acupuncture as a treatment in equine reproduction, and to discuss current uses of acupuncture for the treatment of anestrus, urine pooling, uterine infection and/or fluid, infertility, maintenance of pregnancy, cryptorchidism, musculoskeletal pain, and poor libido in stallions. The benefits achieved through acupuncture treatment are thought to be a result of hormonal regulation, altered smooth muscle motility, and general stress and/or pain relief from musculoskeletal or environmental conditions.

A 37,XO-chromosome complement was detected in a 21/2-year-old sable Burmese cat examined because of primary anestrus. The cat was smaller than its littermates; other somatic abnormalities associated with the XO karyotype in other species were not present. The ovaries, which did not respond to gonadotropin stimulation, contained inactive germinal epithelium (lacking follicles and primordial germ cells), which was similar to that of adult human patients with XO-gonadal dysgenesis.
