A Sunderland type IV traction injury to the C6 root of the sheep or lamb brachial plexus was used as a model for obstetric traction injury to the C5 root in humans. Balloon dilatation of the ductus arteriosus was carried out in vivo in newborn pigs and on postmortem specimens from humans and piglets. Differences in acute hepatotoxicity of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and dimethylnitrosamine (DMN) have been tested in normal foetal, newborn and adult rats, foetal, newborn and adult rats pretreated with phenobarbitone and partially hepatectomized adult rats. While CCl4 is non-toxic to the foetal and newborn liver, DMN induces identical necrosis at all ages.
