Functional connectivity explains how neuronavigated TMS of posterior temporal subregions differentially affect language processing.

BACKGROUND: "Wernicke's area" is most often used to describe the posterior superior temporal gyrus (STG) and refers to a region traditionall … ve TMS bursts during a picture naming paradigm to probe speech disruptions of different categories (anomia, speech arrest, semantic paraphasia and phonological paraphasia). We combined an in-house built high precision stimulation software suite with E-field modeling to map the naming errors to cortical regions and revealed a dissociation of language func …

Double dissociation between picture naming and comprehension: an electrostimulation study.

We performed a cortico-subcortical language electrical mapping, using a picture naming task and a semantic test of association, during resection of a left posterior temporal glioma in an awake patient. Two discrete naming sites were identified in the posterior part of the left superior temporal gyrus, plus a third distinct site between the two previous areas, inducing specific comprehension disorders without anomia when stimulated. After resection, white matter stimulation elicited anomia without comprehension disorder. We suggest the existence of distinct naming and comprehension systems, whi…

Somatic neurosis in middle-aged Hindu women.

Somatization in neurotic disorders was noted as a significant complication in their classification. Besides being an aspect of other neuroti … scores on the Intrafamily Interpersonal Trust Scale. The groups, however, did not differ on Srole's Anomia scale scores. It was argued that the good expressed interpersonal trust with specified family members in contrast to the high anomia indexes, a particular dynamic in the family. The study points to the need for further study of this condition.

A lexical semantic hub for heteromodal naming in middle fusiform gyrus.

Semantic memory underpins our understanding of objects, people, places, and ideas. Anomia, a disruption of semantic memory access, is the most common residual language disturbance and is seen in dementia and following injury to temporal cortex. While such anomia has been well characterized by lesion symptom mapping studies, its pathophysiology is not well understood. We hypothesize that inputs to the semantic memory system engage a specific heteromodal network hub that integrates lexical retrieval with the appropriate semantic content. Such a network hub has been proposed by others, but has th…

The most prominent disconnection syndrome elements were left tactile anomia (in spite of a rather good tactile-motor integration between the hemispheres), left visual anomia, agraphia of the left hand and 'diagnostic' apraxia. The fact that the anterior part of the corpus callosum was intact accounts for the preservation of …

[Case studies of left unilateral apraxia].

The authors report two cases of motor apraxia, agraphia and tactile anomia on the left side, associated with bilateral constructive apraxia. These cases are discussed in relation to their unusual etiology and in relation to possible pathogenetic hypothesis other than classical Liepmann's scheme.

Baseline structural imaging correlates of treatment outcomes in semantic variant primary progressive aphasia.

Semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a loss of semantic knowledge in the context of anterior temporal lobe atrophy (left > right). Core features of svPPA include anomia and single-word comprehension impairment. Despite growing evidence supporting treatment for anomia in svPPA, there is a paucity of research investigating neural mechanisms supporting treatment-induced gains and generalization to untrained items. In the current study, we examined the relation between the structural integrity of brain parenchyma (tissue inclusive of…

[Clinical picture of left posterior cerebral artery occlusion. Alexia syndrome without agraphia].

The authors present a clinical description of three cases of occlusion of the left posterior cerebral artery. The pathogenesis of the syndrome of alexia without agraphia is discussed, together with other coexistent symptoms and signs such as hemianopsia, colour anomia, disturbances of recent memory. The discussion is based on own observations and a review of the pertinent literature.

Developmental Gerstmann's syndrome: a distinct clinical entity of learning disabilities.

The symptom complex of finger anomia, right-left disorientation, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia constitutes Gerstmann's syndrome. It is mostly described in adults and is caused by acquired lesions of the dominant parietal lobe. It is infrequently described in children with learning disabilities and has been designated developmental Gerstmann's syndrome. Developmental Gerstmann's syndrome goes unnoticed if not specifically sought by clinicians. A detailed evaluation will reveal subtle neurologic deficits, behavioral problems, and neuropsychologic and specific speech and language abnormalities. Ten…

Slowly progressive aphasia without generalized dementia: studies with positron emission tomography.

Slowly progressive aphasia without generalized dementia is a degenerative syndrome selectively affecting dominant hemisphere language areas. We report changes in regional glucose metabolism measured by positron emission tomography in two patients with this condition. Striking abnormalities of glucose utilization in the left cerebral cortex were demonstrated in both patients. The findings of other neurodiagnostic studies were relatively unremarkable. The first patient had a 3-year history of progressive anomia and impaired auditory verbal recall. An electroencephalogram was normal, and computed…

Expected performance of Quebec-French older adults on the Batterie Rapide de Dénomination (BARD).

Difficulties retrieving words during conversations, called anomia, are frequent in the late preclinical stage of Alzheimer's disease, in mild cognitive impairment, and in major neurocognitive disorders. Picture-naming tests, used to assess anomia, are too lengthy and are unsuitable for medical or nursing practices. The main objective of this study was to confirm the usefulness of the Batterie Rapide de Dénomination (BARD - Battery of Rapid Denomination), an electronically-administered picture-naming test comprising 10 pictures for which perfect naming scores were obtained in French, English an…

Impact of immersive virtual reality compared to a digital static approach in word (re)learning in post-stroke aphasia and neurotypical adults: Lexical-semantic effects?

BACKGROUND: Word production difficulty is one of the most common and persisting symptoms in people suffering from aphasia (i.e., anomia). However, there is a considerable variability in patients' responses to treatment, leading to the need of new effective approaches. Also, the mechanisms underlying word (re)learning is little known in production even in neurotypical adult native language and especially in relationship with the lexical-semantic integration of (re)learnt words. The lexical-semantic network being highly contextual and multimodal, new technologies such as immersive virtual realit…

[Callosal infarction after bilateral occlusion of the internal carotid arteries with hemineglect syndrome and astasia-abasia].

We report a patient who had a callosal infarct, showed by Computer Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging, without injury to the adjacent hemispheres. Angiography revealed an occlusion of both internal carotid arteries. Besides interhemispheric disconnection with unilateral left agraphia, left tactile anomia, left ideomotor apraxia and left ear auditivoverbal extinction, the patient showed signs of left hemineglect and astasia-abasia, both persistent.

Signs of interhemispheric disconnection in marchiafava-bignami disease.

We report three cases of Marchiafava-Bignami disease. The diagnosis was made on clinical grounds. Evidence of interhemispheric disconnection was found in all three cases. This included left hand anomia, left-sided apraxia, left-hand agraphia, and left-sided pseudoextinction to both visual and tactile stimuli. In two cases, there was a left-ear extinction on a dichotic listening test.

Naming difficulties after thyroid stimulating hormone suppression therapy in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) suppression therapy after differentiated thyroid carcinoma surgery causes cognitive impairment. However, data on naming difficulties (anomia)-related specific cognitive impairment are lacking. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted, in which, patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma and benign thyroid nodules were given oral L-T4 therapy after surgery, after meeting the criteria of TSH suppression therapy and thyroxine replacement therapy, respectively, the patients were continually given L-T4 therapy for 6 and 12 months, and then…

Lexical access via letter naming in a profoundly alexic and anomic patient: a treatment study.

We report the results of a letter naming treatment designed to facilitate letter-by-letter reading in an aphasic patient with no reading ability. Patient M.R.'s anomia for written letters reflected two loci of impairment within visual naming: impaired letter activation from print (a deficit commonly seen in pure alexic patients who read letter by letter) and impaired access to phonology via semantics (documented in a severe multimodality anomia). Remarkably, M.R. retained an excellent ability to pronounce orally spelled words, demonstrating that abstract letter identities could be activated no…
