The effect of an 8-hour, 3-dose perioperative regimen of cefazolin or placebo was evaluated in 97 patients. Postoperative morbidity occurred in 13 patients (27.1%) in the cefazolin group and in 17 patients (34.7%) who received placebo. The clinical sites of infection were similar in both groups except that wound infections (2) and sepsis (2) were found only in patients receiving placebo. Aerobic organisms diminished and anaerobes increased in patients who received antibiotics. Aerobic isolates were essentially unchanged and fewer anaerobes were recovered from patients given placebo. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the incidence of infectious complications and effect of prophylactic antibiotic administration during operative hysteroscopic procedures.
METHODS: A multicentric randomized controlled trial was conducted between January 2012 and December 2013. Women (n = 180) affected by endometrial hyperplasia, myomas, or endometrial polyps undergoing operative hysteroscopy were randomized to receive cefazolin 2 g intravenously 30 minutes prior to the procedure (n = 91) and no treatment (n = 89).
RESULTS: No statistical difference in terms of postoperative fever (2.4% vs 2.3%, P = .99

Surgery of oesophagus carcinoma is a long and major procedure. Perioperative radiochemotherapy is often required. Therefore many factors favour the occurrence of local and general postoperative infection, justifying an antibiotic prophylaxis directed against oesophageal and gastric flora. In case of oesophageal stenosis, the oesophageal floral often switches to the fecal type. Antimicrobial agents diffuse to the surgical site and reach there high concentrations for the time of surgery. We recommend, just prior the induction of anaesthesia the intravenous administration of a single dose of a th

PURPOSE: Intracameral antibiotic in cataract surgery has shown level I evidence as prophylaxis for postoperative endophthalmitis. Not much is known if one should also use topical antibiotics after intracameral injection. The purpose of the study was to determine efficacy of intracameral antibiotic with and without postoperative topical antibiotic in reducing the incidence of acute endophthalmitis after cataract surgery in rural India.
METHODS: A.
UNLABELLED: prospective comparative, non-randomized interventional study was designed in 15 rural centres in India. The study recruited 40,006 pati

BACKGROUND: The single most important risk factor for postpartum maternal infection is cesarean section. Routine prophylaxis with antibiotics may reduce this risk and should be assessed in terms of benefits and harms.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of prophylactic antibiotics compared with no prophylactic antibiotics on infectious complications in women undergoing cesarean section.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group's Trials Register (May 2009).
SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-RCTs comparing the effects of prophylact

BACKGROUND: The single most important risk factor for postpartum maternal infection is cesarean section. Although guidelines endorse the use of prophylactic antibiotics for women undergoing cesarean section, there is not uniform implementation of this recommendation. This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 1995 and last updated in 2010.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of prophylactic antibiotics compared with no prophylactic antibiotics on infectious complications in women undergoing cesarean section.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group

Two consecutive open studies were performed of the efficacy of a prophylactic cefuroxime/metronidazole combination in abdominal hysterectomy. The first group received a 24-h regimen, the second group a single pre-operative dose. The incidence of post-operative wound infections and urinary tract infections were similar in both groups [wound infections in 1/75 versus 2/84 patients (NS), urinary tract infections 4/75 versus 3/84 patients (NS), respectively, in the 24-h group and single-dose group]. No significant differences in other parameters, such as pyrexia and duration of post-operative hosp

IMPORTANCE: Bladder onabotulinumtoxinA (BoNT-A) is a widely used third-line treatment for overactive bladder (OAB). The most common adverse event is postprocedure urinary tract infection (UTI), yet there are no specific guidelines for antibiotic prophylaxis for this procedure.
OBJECTIVES: Our primary aim was to establish noninferiority in the incidence of postprocedure UTI with single versus multiple-dose peri-procedural antibiotics. Our secondary aim was to describe the rates of adverse events in each group, including urinary retention requiring catheterization.
STUDY DESIGN: Adults undergo

BACKGROUND: Prenatal hydronephrosis (PNH) is one of the most common congenital anomalies and can increase the risk of developing a urinary tract infection (UTI) in the first two years of life. Continuous antibiotic prophylaxis (CAP) has been recommended empirically to prevent UTI in children with PNH, but its use has been controversial.
OBJECTIVE: We describe the incidence of UTI in children with isolated PNH of the renal pelvis without ureteral dilation. Our objective was to compare patients receiving and not receiving CAP and determine whether CAP is beneficial at preventing UTI in children

OBJECTIVES: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) with failed biliary cannulation is associated with a high rate of adverse events, but the role of prophylactic antibiotics remains unclear. The primary aim was to investigate if prophylactically administered antibiotics affect the frequency of overall adverse complications in patients where biliary cannulation fails during ERCP. The secondary aim was to investigate if specific infectious complications, also were affected by the antibiotic prophylaxis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analysed data from 96,818 ERCPs (2006-2018), from t

PURPOSE: Urinary tract infections are amongst the most frequent nosocomial infections followed by surgical site infections (SSI). Antibiotic prophylaxis is only one way to reduce the risk of post-operative infection. Our aim was to establish a review of the literature on measures to reduce post-operative infections outside antibiotic prophylaxis.
METHODS: We performed a review of the literature in February 2019 using Medline database to identify relevant studies published in the last 10 years. We arbitrarily decided to fix our limit to the 10 last years considering that the resistance rate of

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis at the time of nonlaboring cesarean delivery in reducing postpartum infection-related complications.
METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of an observational study of cesarean deliveries performed at 13 centers from 1999-2000. Patients were included if they had cesarean delivery before labor, did not have intrapartum infection, and were not given antibiotics at delivery for reasons other than prophylaxis. The occurrence of postpartum endometritis, wound infection, and other, less common infection-related complications was com

Antibiotic prophylaxis for the prevention of surgical wounds infections is still a matter of debate in dermatology. The authors have performed an open and randomized study on the prophylactic efficacy of azithromycin, 500 mg per os 1 h prior to the procedure in a dermosurgical office. The absence of postsurgical infections when the intervention has been executed in sites without risk of contamination both in the treated and no treated group, has demonstrated that, in the presence of correct prophylactic measures, no antibiotic prophylaxis is necessary. On the other hand, when the procedure has

BACKGROUND: Concern about the risk of upper genital tract infection (pelvic inflammatory disease) often limits use of the IUD, a highly effective contraceptive. Prophylactic antibiotic administration around the time of induced abortion significantly reduces the risk of postoperative endometritis.(Sawaya, 1996) Since the risk of IUD-related infection is limited to the first few weeks to months after insertion,(Lee, 1983; Farley, 1992) contamination of the endometrial cavity at the time of insertion(Mishell, 1966) appears to be the mechanism, rather than the IUD or string itself. Thus, antibioti

The stable prevalence of infective endocarditis since the advent of antibiotic prophylaxis for patients at-risk reflects the increasing polymicrobial etiology of such infections not associated with dental procedures. In addition to concerns for the growing crisis for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, the need for controlled clinical trials to determine the continued efficacy of prophylactic regimens for endodontic and other dental procedures cannot be overstated.

In order to assess the routine use of prophylactic antibiotics (AB) in arthroplastic surgery in Denmark, questionnaires were sent to all Danish orthopaedic departments and all general surgical departments that perform orthopaedic surgery. Fifty-six departments (93%) returned the questionnaires. All departments use prophylactic AB in primary knee and hip arthroplasty and in revision arthroplasty. In addition, all departments but one use prophylactic AB in arthroplasty secondary to osteosynthesis. The largest group of departments uses penicillinase-resistant penicillin (PRP) in their standard pr
